Unease over delay in circulation of SEP draft palpable in State universities
Amid the tussle between the State Government and the office of Governor and Chancellor to wield authority over matters of higher education, the sense of unease among universities and colleges in the State over the apparent delay in circulation of the draft of State Education Policy (SEP) is palpable, academicians say.
The draft of the SEP was submitted to the State Government by Justice Murugesan-led panel during July 2024, as an alternative to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
'The State Universities ought to be provided with the draft of SEP, and given the leverage to adopt at least those provisions that are compatible with NEP 2020, to navigate through the norms of the University Grants Commission,' former Vice-Chancellor of Madras and Madurai Kamaraj Universities P.K. Ponnuswamy said.
'It is quite difficult for State universities to resist the changes that the UGC intends to bring about in the arenas of higher education and research,' he said.
Another former Vice-Chancellor of a State University, requesting anonymity, said the UGC notification emphasising presence of its nominee in the V-C Selection Committees notwithstanding, the provisions for V-C appointment in the statutes of the individual universities is what actually mattered. The UGC nominee can be included in the V-C selection panels only after the Syndicates of the universities adopted resolutions to that effect and make changes in the statutes.
While the State government is staunchly opposed to NEP 2020 in toto, there is little scope for the universities to toe the line, as they are constrained to inevitably put themselves in the reckoning for the periodic NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Committee) rating and the annual NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework), the academics point out.

EU official says €175 million Syria recovery package 'clear message' of support
Visiting EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica said Thursday (June 5, 2025) that a 175 million euro package for war-torn Syria was a "clear message" of support for its reconstruction. Ms. Suica announced the package in Damascus on Wednesday (June 4, 2025), saying it would focus on sectors including energy, education, health and agriculture, helping rebuild Syria's economy, support its institutions and promote human rights. "I came here... with a clear message that we are here to assist and help Syria on its recovery," Ms. Suica told AFP in an interview on Thursday (June 5, 2025). "We want that reconstruction and recovery will be Syria-owned and Syria-led," she said, on the first visit by an EU commissioner since a transitional government was unveiled in late March. "We want to see Syria to be a regular, normal, democratic country in the future," she added. Syria has been navigating a delicate transition since Islamist-led forces ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December after nearly 14 years of civil war. The European Union announced last month it would lift economic sanctions on Syria in a bid to help its recovery. "This is a pivotal moment — a new chapter in EU-Syria relations," Ms. Suica said on X, calling her meeting with interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa "constructive". Like Syria's neighbours, Western governments are keen to steer it onto the road to stability after the war triggered an exodus of millions of refugees. Refugee returns should be "safe, voluntary and dignified", Ms. Suica said. The EU has not designated Syria as a safe country for returns "because we don't want to push people to come here and then they don't have a home", she said. The EU last month sanctioned three Syrian militia groups and two of their leaders for serious human rights abuses over their alleged involvement in sectarian massacres in the costal heartland of the Alawite minority, to which Assad belongs, in March. "We cannot pronounce one part of Syria safe and another not," Ms. Suica said, noting that designating Syria a safe country needs "unanimity among 27 European member states". She said Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani would attend a ministerial meeting involving almost a dozen Mediterranean countries in Brussels on June 23. A statement released on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) said that the European Commission was "actively pursuing the integration of Syria into several key initiatives with its Mediterranean partner countries". Anbumani calls on Ramadoss, attempts to break the ice in vain
VILLUPURAM: PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss called on his father and party founder S Ramadoss at the Thailapuram farmhouse on Thursday in an apparent effort to end the cold war between the two and resolve the ongoing issues between them. The meeting lasted about 45 minutes. However, political observers believed that the meeting did not resolve the issues between the father and son, as neither met the press, hinting that they had not reached an amicable solution for reconciliation. 'The much-awaited meeting has not yielded any fruitful results so far. We have to wait for a couple of days to learn what transpired between the two. Chinna Ayya (Anbumani) and his daughter visited Ayya (Ramadoss). They were closeted for about 45 minutes. Chinna Ayya's elder sister (Gandhimathi) also reached the farmhouse and joined the meeting just five minutes before they concluded the discussions. We have no clue what they discussed, but as usual, the media started speculating,' said a party source. Gandhimathi is the mother of Mukundan, who was appointed as the party's youth wing president despite stiff opposition from Anbumani in December last year. Mikundan has denounced his position a few days ago following the spat between Ramadoss and Anbumani. In a surprise development, Thuglak magazine editor and auditor S Gurumurthy, a pro-BJP political commentator, called on Ramadoss at his farmhouse on Thursday ahead of Union home minister Amit Shah's visit. Gurumurthy's visit was regarded as an attempt to insist that Ramadoss continue in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and face the assembly polls next year in the state. The visit comes after Ramadoss, while lashing out at his son a few days ago, had openly said he was not in favour of joining NDA for the 2024 parliamentary polls but was forced to do so following pressure from Anbumani and Sowmiya Anbumani. Ramadoss had earlier demoted his son from the post of president to working president, sparking a war between them. The father and son rift widened further after they held separate meetings with the party's top functionaries over the past few days to gain control over the party. Anbumani, while speaking to the party functionaries in Chennai on Wednesday night, termed party secretary Anbalagan a traitor for attempting to destroy the party.

Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu orders shifting of stray cattle
Dharwad: Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu has directed the HDMC and other local bodies in the district to initiate action to remove the stray cattle occupying the roads and other public places and send them to goshalas. Taking a serious note of the report, DC Divya who chaired a district level meeting of officials from the police, veterinary, revenue and HDMC said the stray cattle should be sent to goshalas. "If the cattle found occupying a road or public place belongs to an owner, he should penalised and punished as per the law. The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 stupulates imposing a fine of Rs 3 lakh and imprisonment upto five years" the DC said. The DC directed the officials to ensure that animal slaughter is done in places that have been permitted as per law and not at unauthorised places. Task force formed The DC also constituted task forces under the chairmanship of tahasildar's of respective taluks to oversee the proper implementation of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 during Bakrid which will be observed on June 7. The meeting was attended by all the tahasildars, veterinary department officers, police officers and others.
