Leeds signs Slovenia defender Jaka Bijol for return to Premier League
Newly promoted Premier League club Leeds added Slovenia standout Jaka Bijol to its defence ahead of the second-tier champion's return to the top level.
Leeds said the 26-year-old centre-back signed a five-year deal. The transfer fee paid to Udinese was reportedly around 15 million pounds ($20 million).
Bijol has played 63 times for Slovenia, including all four games at the 2024 European Championship.
He helped shut out the England attack led by Harry Kane and Portugal's attack led by Cristiano Ronaldo in 0-0 draws. Slovenia was eliminated by Portugal in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout.
Slovenia starts a 2026 World Cup qualifying group in September in a competitive group with Switzerland, Sweden and Kosovo.
Leeds, whose United States ownership group is led by 49ers Enterprises, starts its Premier League season hosting Everton on August 18.

Neymar is the Brazil national team's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, two more than another Santos product, Pele, but his quest for a World Cup winner's medal has repeatedly ended in disappointment. Neymar was recalled to the Brazil squad in March for two World Cup qualifiers, but withdrew with a thigh injury. In May, new coach Carlo Ancelotti left Neymar out of his first squad. Neymar extends contract with Santos until the end of 2025
Neymar has extended his contract with Brazilian club Santos until the end of December. The 33-year-old forward returned to his boyhood club in late January but has been limited by injuries. His current deal was set to expire next week. Neymar and Santos confirmed the extension Tuesday. 'I extended my contract with Santos. I went, I came back and I stay where it all began and where it will never end,' Neymar said in a video on his social media channels. Neither side explained why he did not extend his contract until the middle of 2026, when many Brazilians still expect him to play in the World Cup. Earlier in June, new Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti hinted he is counting on Neymar's recovery to play in the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Since he left Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal for Santos, Neymar has played 12 matches, scored three goals and provided three assists. He had two extended periods of absence due to muscle injuries. Neymar played 225 matches for Santos in his first spell.
