Cara Delevingne's Plunging See-Through Maxi Dress Is Giving Peak Indie Sleaze

Yahoo07-05-2025

We all know fashion is cyclical, and the latest trend making a comeback is none other than indie sleaze. Information that probably won't come as much of a surprise, given the warning signs have been around for a while now. Charli XCX's Brat Girl Summer was one of the first indicators—the no bra, white tank top and smudged eyeliner uniform is almost identical to that of the grunge aesthetic of indie sleaze.
For further confirmation, you need only to look at Cara Delevingne's latest outfit. The model-turned-actress attended the Ocean With David Attenborough World Premiere at The Royal Festival Hall in London on Tuesday, May 6, wearing an ensemble that was peak indie sleaze. Specifically, a totally transparent silver mesh maxi dress that featured a dangerously plunging neckline, with Cara opting to go braless.
Perhaps the most indie sleaze aspect of her look was the fact her lacy black thong was on full display, clearly seen through the see-through fabric.

Cara layered a long black blazer over the top of the risqué design, adding dark green velvet platform heels on her feet. She accessorized with a quirky statement necklace that depicted a bird in flight with three crystal pendants suspended from its wings.

Cara and Charli aren't the only celebrities repping the indie sleaze look in 2025. Olivia Rodrigo has crafted a distinct grunge wardrobe both on and off stage that aligns perfectly with her pop punk music.
Similarly, Addison Rae is embracing a 'messy girl' undone vibe as she takes to Instagram to post filtered selfies wearing wired headphones in aid of promoting her soon-to-be-released album. As much as fashion played a large role in the initial indie sleaze movement, it was intrinsically linked to music, so it's no wonder many artists are tapping into the revival.
Outside of music, all around icon Julia Fox is another A-lister giving indie sleaze new meaning in 2025, along with models of the moment Lila Moss and Amelia Gray. But the most surprising celeb backer is Timothée Chalamet.

The press tour for his latest film, A Complete Unknown, in which Timmy portrays a 19-year-old Bob Dylan, saw him don skinny jeans, leather suits, full tracksuits and most significantly, an Alexander McQueen skull scarf earlier this year.
Worn in the early '00s by everyone from the Olsen twins and Lindsay Lohan to Nicole Richie and Lily Allen, there is perhaps no better visual signifier of indie sleaze than the skull scarf that first appeared in McQueen's spring/summer 2003 collection.
Whether you'll be following suit on the fashion front or not, consider this your green light to embrace a bit of messiness.

Dawn French says sorry for posting 'one-sided' Gaza video

Dawn French has taken down a video she posted on Instagram about the war in Gaza, saying she apologised "unreservedly" for it. The video sparked a backlash, with critics accusing the actress and comedian of appearing to "mock" the 7 October 2023 attack. On Saturday, French acknowledged on Instagram that the video "appeared one-sided", and said she never meant to "mock, or dismiss, or diminish the horror" of that day. "I hope you will understand my intention was not to offend, but I clearly have. For which I am sorry and I have removed the video," she added. In the 40-second video, posted earlier this week, the Vicar of Dibley star shared her views on the ongoing war, saying: "Complicated, no, but nuanced. But [the] bottom line is no." Switching into a high-pitched voice, she went on to say: "Yeah, but you know they did a bad thing to us, yeah but no. But we want that land... and we have history… No. Those people aren't really even people, are they really? No." On social media, people were quick to criticise her, with actress Tracy-Ann Oberman saying she was "so saddened" by the post. "This mocking voice 'bad thing' of October 7 that Dawn (who I revere by the way) appears [to] be mocking involved the most horrific terrorist attack involving rape, sexual violence, burning alive, child mutilation and taking of civilian hostages," she wrote. "Why would Dawn seem to deny that which has affected so many of us personally in the most painful way possible." MP Rosie Duffield commented on Oberman's post, writing: "One can, and should hate what is happening in Gaza and also condemn the hideous events of October 7th. "It is agonising to see events unfold, and requires extremely careful, measured and well-considered comments and actions. This is not that." Meanwhile, screenwriter and activist Lee Kern called her video "sneering mockery". Responding to the backlash, French said that she had posted a video in the style that she has been using for social media "in an effort to convey an important point". She added that she had "clumsily used a mocking tone". "My intention was NEVER to mock, or dismiss, or diminish the horror of what happened on 7 October 2023 and what continues to unfold from that brutal unthinkable, unforgiveable, savage attack," she said. She said her intention had been "to mock and point the finger of shame at the behaviour of the cruel leaders on all sides of this atrocious war". "THEY were my target, but clearly I failed to do that, and that's on me. I apologise unreservedly, and I'm particularly sorry that my disgust at Hamas didn't figure. It appeared one-sided and that is wrong." Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led cross-border attack almost 20 months ago, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Some 54 of those captured during the attack remain in captivity, including 31 the Israeli military says are dead. At least 54,607 people have been killed in Gaza since then, including 4,335 since Israel resumed its offensive on 18 March, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.

ABC via Disney+ Since being posted to TikTok, this clip has been liked almost 200k times, and racked up thousands of comments — with many of them saying the same thing. 'this would be called woke today,' a popular comment reads. Somebody else echoed: 'They tried to do a story like this these days MAGA would call it 'woke' and call for a boycott of everyone involved.' 'Funny how back then the audience would have perceived the dad as a 'good man', whereas now the same audience would call him 'woke/soft/leftist,'' another user added. 'now you would have 300 guys complaining it's woke,' one more agreed, while somebody else observed: 'It's almost like 'wokeness' that people keep referring to has always been there, it just wasn't wrapped up in inflated egos fueled by political rhetoric.' And one more concluded: 'I got so many of my lessons in being a man from 90s sitcoms. Just human lessons, not activists lessons.'
