CBI arrests Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol activist from Imphal airport
CBI arrested a member of Arambai Tenggol from Manipur's Imphal Airport and brought him to Guwahati on Sunday (June 8, 2025). He will be 'produced before the competent court for police remand', the probe agency said.
'Kanan Singh was arrested by the CBI at the Imphal airport,' they added.
'The information related to his arrest has been given to his family members,' a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) spokesperson said in a statement.
The federal agency is probing cases related to the Manipur ethnic violence in accordance with a direction of the Supreme Court.
'The trials of the Manipur violence cases have been shifted from Manipur to Guwahati in view of the law-and-order situation in Manipur,' the spokesperson said.
The situation in the state capital, Imphal, was tense after reports of the arrest of the AT leader started circulating on Saturday (June 7, 2025).
The CBI statement made it clear that Singh was arrested from the Imphal airport on Sunday (June 8, 2025).
As a preventive measure, the administration has issued prohibitory orders in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching districts, while internet and mobile-data services, including VSAT and VPN facilities, have been suspended in these valley areas.
Protesters torched tyres and old furniture on roads in Kwakeithel and Uripok, demanding the release of the Meitei leader.
They clashed with security forces at different places in the state capital on Saturday (June 7, 2025) night. A mob also set a bus on fire at Khurai Lamlong in Imphal East district.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic clashes between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups in Manipur since May 2023.
The Centre imposed the President's rule in the northeastern state on February 13 after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned.
The state Assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.

According to sources in the Manipur Police, Singh is a prominent leader of the Arambai Tenggol who was actually a head constable in the Manipur Police till a few months ago. 'He had ties with the Arambai Tenggol and had been placed under suspension after his involvement was found in many instances of violence. Following this, he was dismissed from service earlier this year,' a police source said. 'He had been involved in cases of murder and extortion.' The source added that he was handed over to the CBI after the arrest as the central agency is probing the case of the police abduction last year. In February last year, additional superintendent of police (operations) M. Amit posted in Imphal (West) was thrashed and abducted by 'unknown armed miscreants' of Arambai Tenggol from outside his home. An AK47 was snatched from an inspector-rank officer attached to the SP and his driver's nose was also broken in the melee. The officer was, however, rescued by a police team led by senior officers in a two-hour-long operation. Police sources had told ThePrint that the officer's house was attacked and he was abducted to put pressure on the police to release a few armed members of the Arambai Tenggol who were arrested earlier. The radical armed Meitei group, Arambai Tenggol, faces many allegations of violence, looting and arson attacks on churches in Manipur. According to sources, the Arambai Tenggol was founded in 2020 as a cultural body, but soon transformed into a radical armed outfit. The group had also summoned MLAs for a meeting at Kangla Fort on 24 January last year. As many as 37 of Manipur's MLAs and two of the state's MPs—one from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha — had answered its 'summons' for the meeting, where they took an oath to 'protect the integrity of the state'. The group, the sources said, acquired a position of unparalleled prominence in Manipur. So much so that it is widely referred to as a 'parallel government', as public disenchantment with the actual administration — and its failure to stop the ongoing ethnic violence—surges in Manipur. Following the imposition of the President's Rule in Manipur in February, there has been a crackdown on members of the Arambai Tenggol, as many of them have been placed under arrest and arms recovered from them. The unrest has prompted authorities to reimpose curfews and suspend internet services in several areas. The KNA leader is accused of masterminding the killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand and an ambush that injured three police commandos in Moreh. 'When someone like the governor gives a written assurance that no action would be taken against them (Arambai Tenggol) after they surrendered their arms in February— and then this happens, it erodes the credibility of the office,' the Metei member alleged. 'The arrest is one thing, but how and when it was done matters. It paints a very negative picture of intent.' He acknowledged that Arambai Tenggol is an armed group and that holding weapons is illegal, especially if taken from the police. 'But you have to understand the context,' he said. 'When the conflict started two years ago, the people ran to the police and army while their homes were burning, but the officers said they had no orders. People were crying, begging for help—and nothing was done.' That's when, he said, the Arambai Tenggol stepped in. 'If the police and army had responded, this wouldn't have happened.' 'Yes, it's unlawful,' he said, 'but it began with abandonment. That's the real failure.' Manipur tense after Meitei member's arrest; Local group declares 10-day shutdown
IMPHAL: Tensions escalated across the valley districts of Manipur following the arrest of Asem Kanan, a member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Guwahati, on Sunday. In a press release, CBI said: 'Kanan was arrested on Sunday at Imphal airport for his involvement in various criminal activities linked to the 2023 Manipur violence. His family has been informed of the arrest.' The statement also mentioned that CBI is investigating cases related to the Manipur violence as per the directive of the Supreme Court of India. 'Due to the prevailing law-and-order situation, the trial of these cases has been shifted from Manipur to Guwahati,' it said. CBI further confirmed that Kanan has been transported to Guwahati and will be produced before a competent court for police remand. According to police officials familiar with the matter, Kanan was arrested along with four other Arambai Tenggol members on Saturday from Imphal. However, the CBI's official statement confirmed only the arrest of Kanan. Meanwhile, violent protests erupted in Imphal city. Hundreds of demonstrators blocked major roads using burning tyres, wooden planks, and other debris. Security forces fired tear gas shells, mock bombs, and live rounds to disperse the crowds. Amid the chaos, a 13-year-old boy sustained serious injuries to his leg, reportedly from a tear gas shell explosion. He was evacuated to a nearby hospital. From Saturday evening to 5.30 pm Sunday, at least 11 people were reported injured in connection with the unrest, with the situation continuing to deteriorate in the evening. Security forces have been deployed at key locations across Imphal, including Palace Compound in Imphal East, and Keishampat Bridge, Moirangkhom, and Tiddim Road stretching up to Imphal airport in Imphal West. Arambai Tenggol on Saturday announced a 10-day statewide shutdown demanding the unconditional release of the arrested volunteers. Additionally, a women's group from Khurai in Imphal East issued a stern warning, demanding that 'all MLAs currently outside the state return to Imphal and form a new popular government by 6 pm on June 10.' The group declared that any MLA who fails to return by the deadline will not be allowed to re-enter the state. As of 5.30 pm Sunday, the situation remained highly volatile in the valley districts, with security on high alert and public anger mounting.
