PSG coach in middle of heated post-match scuffle with Chelsea after FIFA Club World Cup final

New York Post13-07-2025
Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain looked like bitter rivals by the end of the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday after the Premier League club toppled the French club in a 3-0 victory.
But after the whistle sounded, the action didn't stop, with PSG coach Luis Enrique pushing João Pedro amid a scrum that was already occurring at MetLife Stadium.
Pedro went to the ground, drawing more players into the post-match shenanigans and creating a pushing and shoving match before cooler heads eventually prevailed.
Pedro had been engaged in a verbal confrontation with another PSG player when Enrique entered the fray and shoved the Chelsea player.
PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who also appeared to shove Pedro, was caught in the middle of the incident and was grabbed by a team staffer to try and protect him as other Chelsea players came to Pedro's defense.

Prior to Sunday, Chelsea and PSG had played a total of 10 times across all competitions and had not played one another since 2016.
The Club World Cup final took place at MetLife Stadium in front of a largely pro-Chelsea crowd of over 81,000 people.
The win was a surprise with PSG entering the match as the favorite after having defeated some of soccer's best clubs, including Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Tensions had already been a bit high during the physical match and in the second half, PSG midfielder João Neves was given a red card when he pulled the hair of Chelsea's Marc Cucurella in a retaliatory move.
Chelsea defeated PSG with a pair of goals by star Cole Palmer – in the 22nd and 30th minutes – while Pedro also scored in the later part of the first half.

Martin Zubimendi makes bizarre claim after turning down £51m Liverpool transfer - 'the best decision'

Martin Zubimendi has explained why he controversially u-turned on his decision to sign for Liverpool last summer. Zubimendi, who had helped Spain win Euro 2024 the previous month, verbally agreed a move to Anfield with the Reds prepared to trigger his £51million release clause until the player backtracked and instead opted to stay at Real Sociedad. While Liverpool were understandably displeased at the change of heart, they opted not to reinforce their midfield options and went on to dominate the Premier League under new boss Arne Slot and claim a record-equalling 20th championship. Zubimendi has subsequently signed for last season's leading Premier League also-ran Arsenal for £56m during the ongoing transfer window, and has reflected on rejecting the opportunity to move to Liverpool. READ MORE: Where Liverpool transfer spend is coming from after 'rage' about £300m outlay READ MORE: Federico Chiesa and 13 players who have played for Liverpool first team left out of Far East squad 'It wasn't an easy time,' he says. 'I wanted to stay at La Real, but when offers come in, you start thinking about your options. "The first question I had to answer was whether I wanted to leave - and it wasn't the right time. I felt La Real offered me more opportunities and that I still had a lot to learn, so staying was the best decision.' Of moving to Arsenal, Zubimendi added: "It's a different change for me. It's the change I wanted. Since the first day I've been here, I've noticed the greatness of this club, and I'm adapting.' Zubimendi has run the risk of further irking Liverpool supporters with comments about Arsenal's lack of success last season. As well as finishing a whopping 10 points behind the Reds in the Premier League, the Gunners were beaten 3-1 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-final to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. And Zubimendi believes Arsenal were the only team to properly threaten PSG, despite Liverpool having succumbed to the French side on penalties in the round of 16 having won in France. Speaking during Arsenal's pre-season tour in Singapore, the Spaniard said: 'The most important thing about this club is that they learn from previous seasons. 'The lessons they've learned from how last season ended will be key to getting even closer to this year's targets. 'Football comes down to details, especially in the Champions League. 'Arsenal were the only team who truly stood up to Paris Saint-Germain and they let it slip because of minor details.'

Liverpool change in transfer plan explained as verdict shared on £300m arrivals

Lucas Leiva believes the settled nature of Liverpool's squad will allow Florian Wirtz the freedom to justify his £116m price tag. And the former midfielder says no-one at Anfield will be uneasy about the raft of new arrivals this summer. Wirtz became the most expensive Liverpool signing of all time when the Premier League champions agreed to pay Bayer Leverkusen an initial £100m with a further £16m in success-based add-ons last month and the Bundesliga player of the season arrives amid huge excitement among the Reds' fanbase. The 22-year-old followed on from the £29m addition of his Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong before a £40m capture of Milos Kerkez was confirmed from Bournemouth later that month. Lucas, who served Liverpool for 10 years prior to his 2017 departure, thinks the makeup of the squad means Wirtz will find it easier to play the sort of football that emboldened the club fend off interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich to land him in a blockbuster deal in June. "I have seen him a bit, not much, but I think he is a midfielder who can score goals, can assist and link-up with the strikers - we don't know the system that Arne [Slot] will probably play - but I think he will add something different to the players we have in midfield," Lucas told the ECHO in Hong Kong. "Of course, the price tag, it always comes with big expectations but I think he has shown that he is capable of doing that and he won the league, the cup and he has good experience as a national team player so I think he is arriving in a team that is very well organised, which will just give him the freedom to express himself. "I think, you know, new signings are always welcome when they come to add something more to this squad. Because it is what players expect from the new players: to add something more that they maybe don't have - or they have to replace someone that had to leave or moved on. "No, I think in a team like Liverpool, competition is always there. People understand if they don't want competition they cannot be at Liverpool because you fight for titles, you fight for good things and you must have competition for places in every single position. "You cannot do this on your own, that is very clear. So in the same way, of course fans get excited when you have a lot of players coming in and spending a lot of money but let's not forget that players who are already here now or was here last year, we didn't have as many signings and we still won the league. "So it's important that these new players will feel the culture of the team that will help them to succeed but the players who are here already, they have a strong base to keep going forward. So it doesn't mean that we spend a lot of money and we're going to win. But it's clear that I am sure they will add something the team needs to keep competitive." Lucas added: "Building from a position of strength? Exactly. That is how I see it. Many years ago, we had so many injury problems and I remember a season where we ended up with almost no defenders (2020/21) and so I think the club realised that it needs to have depth because if you have injuries, you can replace players of the same level and I think it is that. I can imagine that is what the club is thinking. "It is really important [for the seniors players to maintain club culture] and I think we have so many leaders in that team now. Alisson, Virgil, Mo Salah, Robertson. So it is really important to help these players, the new signings, to understand the role they are playing. "And also to understand the culture of work, of a team and we can see that Liverpool, no-one who is more important than the team and it is really hard, it seems easy, but it is really hard to create that culture and that is why Liverpool have been so successful." Liverpool return to action when they meet AC Milan at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on Saturday before jetting out to Japan for the second leg of their Asian tour.

Wolves express interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Amine Adli

Sport Bild – as relayed by – reports that Wolves are interested in Bayer Leverkusen attacker Amine Adli. The 25-year-old himself is said to have requested that his Bundesliga club enter into negotiations with the Premier League outfit. The report nevertheless notes that the two clubs remain far apart on a potential transfer fee. Adli – after an injury-interrupted 2024/25 campaign – has seen his estimated market value decline to €18m. Germany's red company team remain convinced that Adli is still worth €30m. Adli attained this career-high-value in May of 2024 as part of B04 head coach Xabi Alonso's league/cup winning undefeated squad. As for the player's personal wishes, Adli has furnished inconsistent statements in recent weeks. The Moroccan international appeared to leave his future with die Werkself open in an interview at the beginning of training camp. Nine days ago, however, Adli declared that there was 'no need to discuss a transfer' when speaking on his progress in camp under new head coach Erik ten Hag. Adli's current Leverkusen deal, extended just last November, runs until 2028. GGFN |
