WWE superstar Trick Williams has blasted fans for TNA Wrestling 'outsiders' over him.
The 31-year-old star made history last month by becoming the first ever WWE-contracted wrestler to win the TNA Wrestling World Championship, which he'll defend tonight at Against All Odds.
He'll be taking on Elijah, AKA Elias, after beating TNA's Mike Santana on NXT earlier this week, and Trick exclusively told Metro how he's embracing his hectic schedule and enjoying performing for a new crowd.
'Shoot, that's what I want, you know? I mean, I want to see many people as possible. I don't want to get stuck in just the Performance Center,' he admitted.
'I love the Performance Center. They've been great to me – but shoot, as we can see, they can turn on you any minute. I gave blood, sweat and tears for four years.
'Look at them now, they're cheering for Mike Santana, an outsider. Ain't been here, ain't got his feet wet! So, yeah, I want to go see other people. Orlando's been good to me, but shoot, they change… I'll change up too.'
The two-time NXT Champion, who also has a run with the NXT North American Title to his name, also insisted he isn't simply carrying on the TNA World Championship legacy.
The prestigious title has been held by the likes of Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, LA Knight, Nick Aldis and maybe more over the years, but Trick isn't looking at the past.
'I ain't continuing nothing. I'm starting my own legacy. I mean, you're right – Kurt Angle had the title, LA Knight had the title, Bubba Ray Dudley had the title.
'We can go all day, but the thing is, has it ever been a big of a deal as it is right now? I mean, the TNA Title is literally the best title to have in all of wrestling today.'
On-screen, fans have seen Trick bring hip-hop into his wrestling persona, 'dropping diss tracks' on the likes of former champ Joe Hendry and Santana.
'I just moved into a house, and as I'm moving and packing, I found a journal that I had since sixth grade, of my raps that I was writing way back in the day,' he beamed.
'I'm really doing this on TV now, I'm dropping diss tracks on my opponents. Who would have known that skill, or that passion, something I love so long ago, was gonna be something that I use to humiliate my opponents?'
His next challenger is superstar Elijah (AKA Elias), who has dealt with his rivals in a similar way across WWE and TNA. When it comes to actually getting in the ring, Trick isn't fazed.
'I've known him for a while. He's a strong guy. He's an athlete. He's wise beyond his years. He's swole, he done put on some weight, he looks good,' he said.
'Truth is, there's one Trick Williams. [Elijah] straps on his boots same way I strap on my boots. I'm ready to go to war.'
Trick's been well-prepped for moments like this, under the tutelage of NXT boss and WWE icon Shawn Michaels.
'I've been working for him for four or five years now, and it's just cool to see our relationship actually grow,' he added.
'I get to sit down with him now, and the feeling of him actually trusting me to go out there and do what I'm supposed to do. [But] I don't know if I got all this trust yet.'
Another key figure for Trick has been Booker T, another Hall of Famer who has been vocal behind the scenes – and the commentary desk. More Trending
'He's been a great mentor for me,' he said. 'He verbalises all the support every single week, that's just an extension of who he truly is and how he helps me behind the scenes.'
Now, Trick is repaying that faith by representing WWE with TNA gold around his waist.
'TNA is a magical place,' he admitted. 'I'm able to spread my wings and be exactly who I always wanted to be. Even more so now you've put his gold on me, you really can't tell me nothing! My head is all the way through the building.'

Materialists director on ending backlash: 'I'm not asking you do anything'

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Celine Song's former career as a matchmaker stood her in excellent stead to make Materialists, the rom-com about modern dating that has seemingly sent some parts of society over the edge. It stars Dakota Johnson as successful New York City matchmaker Lucy, who is faced with choosing between charming and attractive private equity partner Harry (Pedro Pascal) or her broke and struggling ex John (Chris Evans). I assume the Past Lives writer-director must have ripped some of the most ridiculous lines we hear Lucy's clients spout in the movie from real life: '39 is not 30s' complains one man in his 40s, while female clients fixate on bagging a man who's at least six feet tall with a $500,000 salary. But Song is pretty serious when recalling how much these 'dominant beauty and wealth standards' warped the job. 'Unfortunately, what I would hear is a repetition of the same values and I wasn't hearing enough variety,' she recalls. And while it's then fun to recount some of the most savage lines from Materialists with her, Song is all too aware that this cold way of looking at love was 'starting to seep into our hearts'. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I think that the math of it [is] trying to overtake love,' she adds, which is exactly what drove her to tell this story. 'We're hearing about height, weight, age, income, and a lot of those things aren't going to matter very much when you're 90. When I see your face, I see your wrinkles and grey hair. Who cares what you look like now?' she asks. As it's put in the movie – we should all be looking for a 'nursing home partner, a grave buddy', someone willing to change your nappy when you're old and incontinent. 'And anybody who loves you, if you ask them 'why do you love me?', they're not going to say a single number!' This sums up the dilemma that both Lucy and her clients try to overcome – and according to some passionate fans in the US, where Materialists was released in June, Lucy made the wrong choice. Song reveals that she's more than aware of some of the heated reactions to Materialists. 'Something that I've heard is like, 'Well, are you telling me that I need to compromise and settle if I [don't] want to be single?' And I would always say, I don't know what you're talking about because I would never ask you to settle for something. I'm not asking you do anything, these are just characters, it's a movie – but these are also decisions that Lucy's making,' she points out. 'You can make decisions that you want to make, given that it's your life. I don't think there's any reason in settling for something that you're 'entitled' to. The only thing you're entitled to from the person who loves you is that they love you!' In terms of who Lucy ends up with too, Song would also like to remind you that 'it's Lucy's life and these are fictional characters'. 'Lucy's telling you that she's not in love with [redacted], right? So, in which case, I think that she should be believed. I think that she would like to be in love with him in the way that I'm sure all of us would like to be in love with somebody who would be very convenient! It would be great if we could be relieved of financial pressure just because we are with someone, but that does not a marriage make.' Past Lives might be a more poignant film on the surface than Materialists, examining the intense nostalgia that comes with the sense of a missed childhood connection, but they're certainly films that can be viewed as in dialogue with each other – to start with, simply because they are both about a woman trying to 'make a decision about what she wants in her life'. 'So much of it is about this woman who is trying to understand her whole life and become a more actualised person,' says Song, of both. But it goes much deeper than that too. The filmmaker is delighted when I suggest that her films are more sincere and honest looks at love than we are perhaps used to, in a world where the rom-com is often overly glossy or else ready to deliver a punchline about love. She knows Materialists reflects herself as the main creative person too – which includes 'who I am beyond just as the filmmaker, but as somebody who lives and thinks in the world'. 'I feel I am pretty sincere, I'm pretty honest,' Song laughs. 'So I think that those are the only kinds of movies that I could ultimately make. It's really hard for me to be winking through a conversation or through a movie.' As someone who assembled such a stand-out A-list cast – but doesn't write scripts with actors in mind – I've got to discuss with Song how Johnson, Pascal and Evans came on board. 'I write the characters on the page and then I go out like a matchmaker in search of their soulmate,' states the director, simply, of her quest for perfection. That seems like a daunting challenge, but unsurprisingly all three of these stars were keen to meet with her following the success of Past Lives. 'I was getting to know them, and I think at some time in the middle of meeting them, I just realised and I was like, 'I think you might be a soulmate to this character, would you read the script?'' And how could anyone say no to that sort of offer? If you have even a passing interest in Materialists, it's been virtually impossible to avoid seeing spoilers for the end; but if you're even a casual consumer of rom-coms, you'll see it coming anyway. However, there is a reveal for Pascal's Harry that I didn't expect, which I won't divulge. Suffice it to say, an uptight man with a more fragile ego might have baulked at it – but Song says: 'I don't think that Pedro would have wanted to make this movie without that scene.' It also links perfectly to the central idea of Materialists and how we 'turn ourselves and each other into merchandise', according to its director – and it's something that resonated with three of Hollywood's hottest stars too. 'I think that all three of my actors really understand what it's like to be treated like merchandise. It was so clear that all three of them really fell in love with their characters as people, and that they wanted to commit to the story of the movie because they really understood it and felt it very deeply.' She adds: 'I don't know if Pedro would have wanted to play Harry if he didn't feel that all this perfection hides something that's quite broken and a lot of self-hatred: that's what really made it interesting for him. The way that Chris found John interesting because of the way that he is broken, or the way that Dakota wanted to play Lucy because of the way she's broken.' As someone making such talked-about films, I'm keen to get Song's take on the rom-com genre, and Materialists being labelled as one. This has sparked the other half of the wave of emotionally-loaded criticism, as some fans claim it's not funny or light enough, while it does also delve into darker – but relatable – dating territory than expected. I suggest maybe Materialists isn't in fact a rom-com, but Song is having none of that: 'I think it's a rom-com because I feel like it's a modern romance and you laugh!' But audiences perhaps don't expect films with serious themes and depth to be sold that way? 'I think that's unfortunate about the way that rom-com as a genre is seen and not about the movie,' Song counters. 'Because I think that rom-coms have had, in its heritage, so many movies that are deeply about things that really matter to all of us.' More Trending She namechecks American icons of the genre Billy Wilder (The Apartment), Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally) and James L Brooks (As Good as It Gets), whose films 'were always going to be about something'. 'I don't think I'm doing something that hasn't been a part of the genre,' argues Song. 'I get to invite the audience to two hours of thinking about love, relationships, marriage and dating in the modern world – and then I have an option to either talk about nothing or I can talk about what it's like to be a human being, which is I think the power of the rom-com as a genre.' 'It's unfortunate if that power has been felt as not an essential part of the genre, because for me that's always been an essential part of rom-coms.' Materialists is in UK cinemas from Friday, August 15. Got a story? Creamfields 2025: Who could perform a secret set over the Bank Holiday weekend?

Who are the leading contenders who could occupy the 9:30pm slot on Creamfields Saturday? Sign up to our daily newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Did you know with a Digital Subscription to Edinburgh News, you can get unlimited access to the website including our premium content, as well as benefiting from fewer ads, loyalty rewards and much more. Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... The mystery of who could perform a secret set at Creamfields 2025 continues almost two weeks out from the start of the festival. Most eyes are looking towards one stage in particular, with a glaring TBA scheduled on Saturday. We take a look at our top contenders who could surprise festivalgoers this year with a sneak set at one of Europe's biggest dance parties. We are just over two weeks away, as of writing, until one of the biggest dance parties in Europe takes place in Cheshire over the August Bank Holiday Weekend: Creamfields 2025. With the set times having been revealed, there are still one or two surprises that could be in store for festival-goers this year, with the usual throng of discussion about who could make a surprise appearance at Daresbury Estate this year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad There is, of course, the glaring absence of an act on the HALO stage on the Saturday of the festival; when we last checked, the TBA had not yet been filled, leading to speculation around that particular set and who could perform it. There's a glaring "TBA" on the SHEIN stage on Saturday night at Creamfields - here's our top five picks who could perform a secret set this year. | Getty Images That the stage on that day is curated by Trick, the record label and events series founded by Patrick Topping, might indicate who could perform, should the stars align and flights not get delayed. Over the years, Trick has become a highly respected brand with a loyal fanbase, thanks to a curated catalogue that includes releases from both industry heavyweights like Green Velvet and Jamie Jones, and breakthrough artists such as Ewan McVicar and Ben Hemsley. The label's stages at festivals like Creamfields are known for their high energy and diverse bookings, making the TBA slot a tantalising mystery that could be reserved for a special performance by a Trick-affiliated artist. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad So, who are our leading contenders for a secret set at Creamfields 2025? Read on to find out who might fit the bill, as it were. Who could perform a secret set at Creamfields 2025? Armin van Buuren This is a classic case of a major artist with an open schedule around a massive festival. Armin van Buuren is one of the biggest names in trance and electronic music, and his presence would be a monumental surprise. He performed at Tomorrowland 2025, which means he is already in Europe and actively touring. His schedule shows no confirmed dates between mid-August and early September, leaving the entire Creamfields weekend free. A legendary artist like Armin van Buuren could easily fill a late-night slot at one of the main stages, and it would be a huge scoop for the festival. Charlotte de Witte As a global techno icon, Charlotte de Witte would be a huge draw for the techno-heavy stages at Creamfields, such as the Steel Yard or the Teletech stage. She also performed at Tomorrowland 2025, confirming she's already in festival mode this summer. While she has a confirmed gig in France on the Friday of Creamfields, her schedule for Saturday and Sunday is currently clear. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A short trip across the English Channel for a surprise headline set on Saturday or Sunday would be a massive coup for the festival and an unforgettable experience for techno fans. Lost Frequencies Lost Frequencies is a mainstream dance superstar whose schedule also appears to have an opening for the Creamfields weekend. He has a confirmed show in Germany on the Monday after the festival, which makes it logistically possible for him to be in the UK. His upbeat, melodic house sound would be a perfect fit for one of the main stages during a peak afternoon or early evening slot. Having a major name like Lost Frequencies appear unannounced would add a huge sense of excitement and spontaneity to the festival. Green Velvet With links to Trick previously, could Green Velvet surprise festivalgoers with a set at Creamfields 2025? | PYMCA/Avalon/Getty Images Green Velvet, a Chicago house and techno pioneer, has a strong collaborative history with Patrick Topping, including several releases on the Trick label. His tour schedule for August shows a gig in Ibiza on the 10th and then in Chicago on the 29th, leaving his weekend completely open for Creamfields (August 22-24). Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad His iconic status in the genres championed by Trick, combined with his availability, makes him a prime candidate for a surprise appearance. Skream Skream is our top pick to perform the TBA slot at Creamfields this year, based on his strong connections with Patrick Topping's label previously. | PYMCA/Avalon/Getty Images Our top pick for the TBA slot on the Trick-hosted stage, Skream has a well-documented history with Patrick Topping's label. This would be a perfect opportunity for the two to go b2b (back-to-back) or for Skream to perform a special, unannounced set. His versatility, with a sound that spans from techno and house to classic dubstep, would make him an ideal fit for a surprise performance. His schedule, while busy, appears to have an open window around the Creamfields weekend, making a last-minute UK flight entirely plausible. Looking for the full list of set times for artists who are confirmed to be playing at Creamfields 2025? Look no further than our round-up of times and set clashes this year.
