79th Independence Day Of India: On August 15, India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day, commemorating the nation's hard-fought freedom from 200 years of British colonial rule in 1947. Recognised as a national holiday, Independence Day is marked by official ceremonies and patriotic fervour across the country. The day begins with the Prime Minister hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi, followed by an address to the nation.
The occasion stirs a deep sense of pride and gratitude among citizens, honouring the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who paved the way for India's independence.
Across the country, people participate in flag-hoisting ceremonies, sing the national anthem, and engage in parades, cultural performances, and patriotic workshops—celebrating the spirit of unity and sovereignty.
Independence Day History And Significance
On August 15, 1947, India awoke to the light of freedom, breaking the chains of over two centuries of British colonial rule. It was a defining moment in history, marked by the country's long-awaited 'tryst with destiny," as eloquently declared by independent India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in his iconic midnight speech. That day, as Nehru hoisted the tricolour for the first time, a new chapter began for a nation rising from oppression into sovereignty.
Since then, Independence Day has been observed with formal celebrations across the country. The sitting Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and addresses the nation, remembering the immense courage and sacrifice of the freedom fighters and leaders who shaped India's struggle for independence.
Educational institutions across India commemorate the day by organising cultural performances, flag hoisting, and interactive workshops that highlight the freedom movement, instil patriotic values, and honour the spirit of the Constitution. The day serves as both a remembrance and a celebration of India's hard-won liberty and its ongoing journey as a democratic republic.
Independence Day 2025 Theme
No official theme has been announced yet for Independence Day 2025. However, given that the government of India typically bases the theme for the day on values of unity, patriotism, and progress, it is anticipated that this year will likely be focused on these, in addition to honouring the legacy of Indian freedom fighters.
Independence Day 2025 Celebrations
The ceremony at the Red Fort begins with the presentation of a Guard of Honour by the Armed Forces and the Delhi Police to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This is followed by the unfurling of the National Flag, accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem and a 21-Gun Salute.
Helicopters of the Indian Air Force shower flower petals during the event.
The Prime Minister then addresses the nation.
Immediately after the speech, the National Anthem is sung once again.
The ceremony concludes with the release of tri-coloured balloons.
79th Independence Day Guestlist
The central government will honour 50 of Delhi's top-performing Swachhta Karamcharis by inviting them as special guests to the Independence Day ceremony at the iconic Red Fort. According to officials, each zonal office has been instructed to nominate five sanitation workers—three women and two men—from their respective areas, along with their spouses, and submit the names to the Ministry of Defence.
The final selection will be based on the workers' performance and their contributions to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in their zones. The Delhi Environmental Management Services (DEMS) headquarters has been appointed as the nodal agency responsible for compiling the list of invitees, as per an order accessed by news agency PTI.

Akhilesh Yadav slams BJP after Hindu groups vandalise centuries-old tomb in UP's Fatehpur

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has sharply criticised the BJP following fresh tensions in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, where Hindu groups vandalised a tomb, claiming it was originally a temple. In a statement, Yadav accused the BJP of pursuing divisive politics, saying, 'Only when society is divided and hatred is spread will the BJP be successful in politics. These people are following an ideology created by the British.' The incident took place at the centuries-old tomb of Nawab Abu Samad. On Monday, a group of Hindu activists staged a protest outside the structure, alleging that it was built after demolishing a Hindu temple. They reportedly sought permission from the district administration to conduct prayers at the site. Video clips circulating on social media show members of Hindu organisations vandalising parts of the mausoleum and hoisting saffron flags on it. The visuals have sparked outrage among the local Muslim community and political opposition. Following the unrest, police deployed tight security around the site to prevent further escalation. The administration is said to be investigating the matter, though tensions remain high. Yadav also pointed out that Fatehpur has witnessed similar communal incidents in the past, recalling that a mosque in the district was earlier demolished for being 'illegal' on the grounds that its construction map had not been approved. He added that in a separate earlier incident, a youth was killed, and action was taken only after considerable public and political pressure. Minister Kapil Dev stated that the Uttar Pradesh administration is fulfilling its responsibilities and emphasised that no individual will be permitted to take the law into their own hands. Minister Nand Kishor Gurjar commented on the controversy surrounding the site, asserting that there was no tomb originally present there. He claimed that the structures were built after the 17th century and linked their existence to the historical persecution of Hindus and the destruction of temples. He acknowledged that the recent vandalism was a reaction to that history, saying, 'Ideally, such actions should have been carried out through proper administrative channels. While those involved were not bad people, the act should have been conducted within the framework of the law.'

ULFA, NSCN factions call for boycott of Independence Day in Northeast

GUWAHATI: The Paresh Baruah-led United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) and the Yung Aung faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) have called for the boycott of the Independence Day. In a joint statement, the two insurgent groups said this 'so-called' celebration of freedom holds no significance for the indigenous people of Western South East Asia (WESEA) – region straddling parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur. They alleged that 'colonial' India gave nothing to the indigenous people of WESEA other than deceit, humiliation, exploitation and oppression. 'The British imperialists exploited, repressed and deprived this region and similarly, for the past 79 years, colonial India has maintained an even more pervasive domination in the name of independence,' the statement alleged. The outfits said the highlight of their protest on August 15 would be a total bandh in WESEA. They appealed to people to extend their support to make the bandh successful. The ULFA-I and the NSCN's Wung Aung faction call for the boycott of India's Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations every year. But despite the boycott call, people go out in large numbers to take part in the celebrations.

Rameswaram fishermen begin indefinite strike condemning frequent arrests

Rameswaram fishermen began an indefinite strike condemning frequent arrests from Monday. A unanimous decision was taken by members at the All Mechanised Fishermen Consultation meeting held here on Sunday. As part of the strike, the fishermen on August 13 would stage a protest at Thangachimadam. Following that, on the day of Independence Day, August 15, they would observe a one-day hunger strike protest. On August 19, from 3 p.m. onwards, they would go on a rail roko till the arrested fishermen were released, said the resolution of the meeting. Jesu Raja, one of the fishermen leaders, said that post-fishing ban period, about seven mechanised boats and one country boat were seized by the Sri Lankan Navy. The 57 fishermen on board the boats were arrested and lodged in prisons, he added. As already the families and associations were demanding the Union government to initiate a diplomatic negotiation to release the 24 convicted fishermen and the boats that were detained by the Sri Lankan government, the fresh arrests had renewed the fear of the entire community, he noted. 'The repeated arrests and attacks against the fishermen from Tamil Nadu had even made us think about discontinuing fishing job. Why should anyone work and earn money at the cost of their own lives,' he asked. Though several plans were chalked out to address the face-off between the fishermen of the two countries in the international waters, the confrontation was yet to be resolved, he said. 'The only plausible way is to hold diplomatic talks and arrive at a solution to end the confusions pertaining to the ownership of Katchatheevu island and matters surrounding it,' he stated. However, he said the fishermen and their families, unlike previous times, were not going to give up their protests to the false promises of the governments.
