NFL Draft analyst sees shades of Eagles great in rookie Jihaad Campbell

NFL Draft analyst sees shades of Eagles great in rookie Jihaad Campbell

If this one turns out to be accurate, the Eagles certainly have something on their hands.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why fans, NFL stars, and the media advise against comparing young and relatively unknown Philadelphia Eagles to legends. Think about the type of pressure it creates. It's hard enough to play football being an original. Playing in someone's shadow is something else entirely.
Imagine what might have happened if Cam Jurgens had been dubbed Jason Kelce's second coming. Heck… Three years ago, Sal Paolantonio stated that Jalen Hurts and Tom Brady shared similar mindsets. People nearly went off the deep end.
Here's the catch. Comparing guys who haven't accomplished anything to established veterans can sometimes motivate if the youngster has an alpha personality. Count Jihaad Campbell in that number.
Respected draft pundit compares Jihaad Campbell to Jeremiah Trotter
One of the exciting subplots of the coming Eagles season is the continued development of Jeremiah Trotter Jr., you may have heard. He's the son of a franchise legend. Here's what's funny, though.
FOX Sports NFL Draft analyst Rob Kang recently dropped his take on one rookie on each NFL team that conjures up memories of a franchise star. He compared Philadelphia's first-round draft choice, Jihaad Campbell, to Jeremiah Trotter Sr. He lists the following as his reasoning for doing so.
"Until free agent addition Zack Baun earned All-Pro honors and Super Bowl glory in his first season in Philadelphia (earning a contract extension), no Eagles' off-ball linebacker had been named a Pro Bowler until Trotter, whose son is now on the roster. Campbell needs time to develop, but his speed in coverage and experience as a pass rusher could make him quite the weapon."
The Axe Man played 11 NFL seasons. Eight of those were spent in Philadelphia with the Eagles. During that run, he racked up 696 tackles, 11 sacks, seven interceptions, and seven forced fumbles during 116 regular-season games with 95 starts.
He stacked another 76 tackles, a sack and a half, an interception, and a forced fumble in 11 playoff games. If the skill we saw from Campbell translates to the professional level, and there is some Trotter in there, this should be fun. Fingers are crossed that the rookie gets healthy as quickly as possible.

Early Results Of Eagles' Massive Gamble Looks No Good

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. There's a youth movement in the Philadelphia Eagles' secondary. The front office decided to take a couple of major gambles over the offseason, showing faith in their young core. While it's still early, one of the developing players the Eagles are banking on is reportedly off to a rough start. The veteran safety, Sydney Brown, was recently listed as a "stock down" candidate after spring practices, according to the Philly Voice. "Brown got first-team reps, but he had to split them with rookie Andrew Mukuba," writes Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski. "It was also probably not a great sign for Vic Fangio's trust in Brown when Fangio said that DeJean might play some safety in the base defense." When it comes to the core guys in the secondary, the Eagles have already been relying heavily on Reed Blankenship and Quinyon Mitchell. Throughout the 2024 NFL season, Cooper DeJean established himself as a major player, boosting his responsibilities for his sophomore effort. The Eagles made a major change at the safety position back in March, when they cut ties with the veteran standout, CJ Gardner-Johnson. In a shocking move, the Eagles decided to send Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans, despite investing in a three-year deal with the safety, bringing him back for a second stint with the team. Members of the Eagles' organization claimed that the decision to move off Gardner-Johnson was due to cap purposes. The veteran safety denied that it was the case, leaving the outsiders to interpret the breakup however they would like. Sydney Brown #21 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates with teammates after an interception in the fourth quarter against the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field on January 05, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Sydney Brown #21 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates with teammates after an interception in the fourth quarter against the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field on January 05, 2025 in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaEither way, the Eagles made multiple big changes in the secondary, and that came with an increase in opportunities for Sydney Brown. Last year, Brown appeared in 11 games for the Eagles. He played just 12 percent of Philadelphia's defensive snaps after seeing the field for 35 percent of the team's snaps in 14 games one year prior. Brown was mostly utilized in a special-teams setting during their long road to Super Bowl LIX. So far, the analysis of Brown's spring isn't promising for the Eagles. Fortunately for them, it's still very early. The Eagles will be back in action for training camp in July, giving Brown a better chance to convince the Eagles that he's the right guy for the job in the defensive backfield. If he can't earn the proper reps during the regular season, the Eagles seem to be open to shifting some players around to make it work out with the current personnel for the time being. Mets option Francisco Alvarez: What went into the decision and what's next

PHILADELPHIA — The New York Mets demoted struggling catcher Francisco Alvarez, one of the organization's most important young players, to Triple A on Sunday, the club announced. For weeks, club officials weighed the delicacy of such a decision, monitoring the situation for improvement. Sending Alvarez, 23, down to the minors for the first time since spring 2023 may be a blow to his confidence at a time when he needs to build on some. But for the club, the move became necessary. Advertisement There was no clear tipping point for the call. Both Alvarez's offense and defense led to the demotion. He is capable of better production on both sides, and the Mets want to see improvement. Alvarez's demotion allows Luis Torrens to assume a full-time role. Torrens deserves the job. Torrens is a standout defender. He handles the pitching staff exceedingly well and deters other teams from stealing bases. His .232/.309/.344 slash line is in line with his career averages. Through April, when Torrens filled in admirably while Alvarez was on the injured list with a broken hamate bone, the veteran backstop delivered a respectable .712 OPS from a position the Mets shouldn't need much offense from, at least in theory. Hayden Senger, who showed Mets officials and rival evaluators in April that he could be a decent backup catcher, replaced Alvarez on the roster. The Mets are comfortable with their catching tandem, people familiar with the situation said, and league sources do not anticipate them jumping into the catcher market at this time. It's unknown how long Alvarez will stay in the minors. The Mets need him to play every day there and figure things out. They are a better team if Alvarez is playing up to his potential. Most surprisingly, Alvarez hasn't hit. More specifically, he hasn't showcased any power, the tool he was known for ever since the Mets signed him to a large bonus as an international prospect in 2018. In 138 plate appearances this season, he is slashing just .236/.319/.333. He hit a home run on Saturday. It was his third home run this season. As a 21-year-old rookie in 2023, Alvarez hit 25 home runs. The power may still be there. He hasn't displayed much of any since then, though. After Alvarez struggled last season, he decided to overhaul his swing in the winter. He wanted to cover more of the plate and use the entire field. A hamate fracture in spring training derailed Alvarez's opportunity to work through those changes at a time when the games didn't mean anything. Advertisement Defensively, Alvarez has struggled to block balls in the dirt and corral errant pitches. With the Mets looking like a serious contender, they felt they could not wait longer for Alvarez to attempt to figure things out at the major-league level. It was time to take action.
