Know your limits: DK Shivakumar to Kannada activists after Thug Life ruling

India Today7 hours ago

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday appealed for calm and urged pro-Kannada organisations and activists to respect the Supreme Court's directions amid the ban on the release of Kamal Haasan's Tamil film Thug Life in the state. His remarks come after the Supreme Court transferred to itself a plea filed by the producer of Thug Life, and warned that mob threats cannot dictate what gets released in theatres.advertisement'In connection with the Kamal Haasan issue, we must follow the directives of the court with due respect,' Shivakumar said, responding to the Supreme Court's sharp remarks against threats to block the film's release. 'Everyone has their limitations, and I request all organisations and activists to acknowledge and stay within those limits.'
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed that while people were free to express their views, it must be done within legal and democratic boundaries.'No one should take the law into their own hands. Karnataka is known for being a peace-loving state,' he said.Highlighting Bengaluru's inclusive identity, Shivakumar said the city had welcomed all languages and cultures.'It is an international city, and everyone needs Bengaluru. Kannadigas have always been large-hearted,' he added. At the same time, he asserted that the dignity of the Kannada language must not be compromised. 'No one should attempt to undermine the self-respect of Kannada, and we too stand firmly by that. But above all, we must respect the judiciary,' he said.advertisementIn its ruling, the Supreme Court questioned the role of the High Court, especially over suggestions that the actor apologise to resolve the issue.'There is something wrong with the system when one person makes a statement and everyone gets involved. Why should the High Court say 'express an apology'? That is not its role,' the court said.It added that the people of Karnataka are free to disagree with Haasan, but fundamental rights must be protected.'If enlightened people of Karnataka and Bengaluru believe his statement was wrong, they can issue a statement saying so. Why threaten to burn down cinemas?'

Toy company challenges Trump tariffs at US Supreme Court; claims misuse of emergency powers; seeks urgent ruling

This is a representative AI image An Illinois-based toy maker, Learning Resources Inc., has taken its tariff battle to the US Supreme Court, urging the justices to swiftly rule on the legality of former President Donald Trump's trade tariffs. In legal documents, the company emphasised the urgency, citing "the tariffs' massive impact on virtually every business and consumer across the Nation, and the unremitting whiplash caused by the unfettered tariffing power the President claims." The company contends that Trump overstepped his authority by using an emergency powers law to impose tariffs without congressional approval. It filed the appeal in a bid to bypass ongoing proceedings in lower courts. Despite securing an initial lower court victory, the ruling remains suspended whilst an appeals court evaluates a similar decision that more broadly challenges Trump's tariffs. Currently, Trump maintains authority to collect tariffs under emergency powers legislation, with arguments scheduled for late July. The Supreme Court traditionally avoids cases before appeals courts reach decisions, reducing the likelihood of granting the expedited hearing requested by the company. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트, 지금 시작하세요 [자세히 보기] 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo Learning Resources CEO Rick Woldenberg highlighted the current impact of tariffs and uncertainty, particularly concerning the approaching back-to-school and holiday periods, which typically generate their highest annual sales. "All the people that are raising their prices are doing it with a sense of dread," Woldenberg told The Associated Press. But, "we do not have a choice. We absolutely do not have a choice," he added. The company's legal representatives proposed scheduling arguments for late summer or early autumn. The Trump administration's defence maintains that emergency powers legislation authorises presidential control over imports during national emergencies, considering the persistent trade deficit as such an emergency. Trump presents tariffs as mechanisms to encourage domestic manufacturing, generate Treasury revenue, and negotiate more advantageous international trade agreements. Woldenberg described investing substantial resources into diversifying his company's supply chain, whilst acknowledging the process as lengthy and unpredictable. "I think that our case raises uniquely important questions that this administration won't accept unless the Supreme Court rules on them," he said. PM Modi Meets Mark Carney At G7, Calls India-Canada Ties ‘Important In Many Ways'

Last Updated: PM Modi At G7 Summit: PM Modi said, 'India and Canada will make progress in many sectors in the coming times." Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, calling the India-Canada relationship 'important in many ways" and expressing hope for renewed progress in multiple areas of cooperation. 'I am very grateful to you for inviting India to the G7," PM Modi said during the meeting, adding, 'And I am also fortunate that I have got this opportunity to visit Canada once again after 2015 and connect with the people of Canada." He said, 'India and Canada will make progress in many sectors in the coming times." 'India is the world's largest democracy. As G20 chair, India launched several initiatives that benefit the global community. Now, there is a significant opportunity to carry forward the strong foundation we laid in the G20 and translate it into action through the G7. India has always embraced such opportunities for the global good—and will continue to do so in the future," he said. What Mark Carney Said During Meeting With PM Modi 'It's a great honour to host you at the G7," Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told PM Modi, adding, 'Your presence here is a testament to the importance of your country, your leadership, and the shared priorities we aim to address- from energy security and the transition you are helping to lead, to the future of artificial intelligence, the fight against transnational repression, terrorism, and more. It is my great honour to have you here as we work together on these critical global challenges." India-Canada relations plunged to a historic low last year following the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023. Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing- claims New Delhi strongly denied, calling them 'absurd" and instead accusing Canada of harboring extremist elements. In the months that followed, both countries expelled diplomats, froze trade negotiations and dramatically scaled down bilateral engagement. Mark Carney Signals Course Correction The diplomatic tone has shifted since April 2025, when economist-turned-politician Mark Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister and extended the G7 invitation to PM Modi. 'As chair of the G7, it is important to invite the most important countries to talk about issues such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals—and India is really at the very centre of global supply chains," Mark Carney had said ahead of the summit. India-Canada Ties On Revival Mode? PM Meets Mark Carney: 10 Points

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 meet in Alberta today. Their bilateral meet carries the hope of a reboot in ties since they deteriorated last year under Justin Trudeau. Here are the top 10 points from this big story: PM Modi is in Alberta on the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney. India is not a member of G7, but attends the meetings. The invite is seen to have signalled Canada's intent to get ties with India and the ongoing partnerships in multiple arenas back on track. Ottawa's relationship with New Delhi had dropped to an all-time low last year, following the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. This is PM Modi's first visit to Canada since. Then Prime Minister Trudeau had pointed fingers at New Delhi, alleging the involvement of Indian agents in the murder. New Delhi had refuted the allegations and accused Justin Trudeau's government of allowing pro-Khalistan groups to operate from Canadian soil. In October. Last year, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats and expelled an equal number of representatives from Canada. Mr Carney, an economist who joined politics recently, succeeded Justin Trudeau in the top job in April. Last week, Mr Carney said India's position as the fifth largest economy and its billion-plus population warranted the invite. "As chair of the G7, it is important to invite the most important countries to talk about issues such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and India is really at the very centre of global supply chains," he had told reporters. "As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigor, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the summit," PM Modi had said before leaving for the three-nation tour. The G-7 summit comes amid an escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel. In a statement, the G7 nations have expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself and condemned Iran.
