McDonald's dethroned as world's largest fast food chain by company with no restaurants in the US

Independent06-03-2025
A new restaurant has bested McDonald's in the number of locations they have worldwide.
Mixue Bingcheng is a Chinese bubble tea and ice cream chain with over 45,000 restaurants worldwide as of September 2024, according to CNN, while the number of McDonald's restaurants all over the world is around 41,800 as of 2023, according to Statista via Chowhound.
The fast-food chain is known for selling soft-serve ice cream cones for one yuan (15 cents) and drinks ranging from between 2 to 8 yuan (30 cents to $1.20).
Despite its high number of locations, 90 percent of them are in China. There are also locations in the Asia Pacific region, including Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia. There isn't a single location in the United States.
Mixue Bingcheng was founded in 1997 by Zhang Hongchao, and originally started out as a store selling shaved ice and cold drinks.
'Let people around the world eat well and drink well for just two American dollars,' Hongchao previously told Chinese state media about his strategy for the business.
Currently, over 99 percent of the bubble tea chain's stores are franchised, with most of their revenue coming from selling food materials, equipment, and packaging to its franchisees.
Although Mixue Bingcheng does have the highest number of locations worldwide, its revenue is still behind other large drink chains in the U.S., such as Starbucks and Tim Hortons.
The news of the fast food chain's success comes just days after McDonald's revealed celebrities' morning-after breakfast orders. On Monday the home of the Big Mac uploaded a YouTube video revealing the orders of stars from Colman Domingo to Julia Fox. The commercial started with the time stamp of 9:14 a.m. at a McDonald's restaurant in Hollywood.
The clip showed a receipt machine churning out the orders, such as Domingo's Egg McMuffin meal — which comes with hash browns and a coffee — with strawberry jelly and ketchup on the side. He also ordered a bottle of water and a strawberry-and-banana smoothie.
Actor Teyana Taylor, who attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party on Sunday the night before she scarfed down some fast food, ordered McDonald's Hotcakes (pancakes) with egg and sausage, a McChicken Biscuit with cheese, and a side of strawberry jelly and butter. She also got a syrup packet and a large orange juice.
Singer Rosalía, who also attended the Vanity Fair after-party, ordered a McGriddles — a breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, and cheese — with a mango-pineapple smoothie and a mayo packet.
Nope star Keke Palmer got oatmeal with fruit and maple syrup, and a side of hash browns.
Emilía Perez star Édgar Ramírez's treated herself to a breakfast of McGriddle with bacon, egg, and cheese, an order of hash browns, and a cup of coffee.

Strictly star George Clarke reveals he's dating stunning lingerie model

The YouTube star is notorious for being single – up until now – as he subtly announces his new relationship just moments before his name is revealed in the Strictly Come Dancing lineup George Clarke has been announced as one of the 15 celebrity contestants of this year's Strictly Come Dancing, just after his first ever public relationship was confirmed. ‌ The 25-year-old YouTuber has made quite the name for himself in the online world, which was amplified by his appearance on the Netflix reality show Inside, which launched earlier this year. Fans of the comedic creator have always been in on the joke about his love life, as the star often talked about his dating mishaps and single life, having never confirmed any kind of relationship. ‌ That was until this week, when George addressed rumours about his relationship status, confirming that he does in fact have a girlfriend. It was during a livestream that the content creator spoke openly about being in a relationship with someone called Amelia. ‌ Fans were quick to find out all they needed to know, as it was discovered that his new love is a stunning model named Yasmin Amelia. She has an impressive 30k followers on Instagram – while George has 686k – and is signed to the J'adore Models agency. According to the Daily Mail, viewers were discussing the news on Reddit, sharing information after the livestream. One user wrote: "Caught me off guard because he is a very private person, especially about his dating/love life. Even on the pod, he has expressed his desire to keep things private and off socials." Another shared: "I heard about this on his stream, and I'm genuinely happy for him!" Someone else chimed in: "He confirmed he follows her Insta and requested to give her space to be her own person." Although, some of his followers couldn't help but speculate about the timing of his low-key announcement. They wrote: "Wonder whose idea it really was to all of a sudden hard launch his month-and-a-half-long relationship?" ‌ That's where the Strictly curse comes in; as many people understand, over the years, the show has been at the forefront of numerous cheating scandals, brought together many celebrity couples, and torn apart existing relationships. We saw this happen when Joe Sugg became the first-ever YouTuber to take on the show, and he began a relationship with his dance partner, and now long-term partner, Diana Bussell. Showing his support for the fellow online star, Sugg commented on the post announcing George's participation in the show. He wrote: "YES @georgeclarkeey, this is going to be brilliant," to which George jokingly responded, "You clearly haven't seen the hips move." Sugg promised to send him a video from his first day at rehearsals back in 2018, when he appeared in the 16th series of the show and finished as a runner-up. He reassured George that this clip would prove that "miracles can happen".

McDonald's quietly axes three burgers from its menu and fans are 'heartbroken'

We hate to be the bearers of of bad news, but McDonald's has quietly axed three classic burgers from the menu. If you've found yourself searching the menu of the fast food chain for the Bacon Double Cheeseburger or the Bacon Mayo Chicken, you're out of luck. McDonald's confirmed both burgers were cut in May, while the Triple Cheeseburger was axed in June. Disgrunted fans have been pining the news on social media. 'The bacon double cheeseburger is important to the McDonald's culture… I'm so disappointed,' wrote @Troy_h8 on X, while @DoktorWatson called the tripple slashing a 'horror of horrors'. Others said they hoped it was a lie. Sorry kids. The Bacon Double Cheeseburger was added to the McDonald's lineup back in 2018, initially in just 64 UK restaurants, before rolling them out nationwide. It initially cost £1.99, although the price was increased to £2.89. It featured two patties, two cheese, two rashers of bacon and onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup and a bun – and it will be sorely missed. However, you can get around the system by ordering a Double Cheeseburger and adding bacon as an extra, so don't despair just yet. The Triple Cheeseburger hit the menu two years later in 2020, with three patties and three slices of cheese, for a modest price of £2.19. One fan was equally as upset this had been axed. 'Bring back the Triple Cheese Burger, I'm honestly heartbroken,' wrote @rachellaura_. 'McDonald's in my area stopped doing their Triple Cheese Burger. I cried,' added another. Why have these changed been made? A McDonald's spokesperson said: 'We're always evolving our menu with our customers in mind to keep things fresh and exciting.' But the changes aren't all bad, because new menu items have hit the restaurants, too. The classic Big Tasty and Big Tasty with Bacon, which are rarely featured on the menu, despite being incredibly popular, have returned until mid-September. Last sold in 2024, the burgers both feature a beef patty, Emmental cheese, onions, tomatoes and a smoky sauce, all served in a toasted sesame bun, and one has some extra bacon. More Trending The catch? You'll have to head to East Anglia to get your hands on one. There's also the Chicken Big Mac making a return. The chicken version of the classic, which features two patties, a slice of cheese, pickles, lettuce and Big Mac sauce, will be back on McDonald's menus everywhere except for East Anglia and Tyne & Tees, for a limited time. But the whole of the UK will be able to enjoy a bunch of other returning fan-favourites, including Spicy Chicken McNuggets served with a Spicy Chilli Dip, the Fajita Chicken One, (a wrap made with creamy fajita sauce, tomato salsa, onions, cheese and lettuce with either crispy or grilled chicken), Chilli Cheese Bites and the Milky Way McFlurry with milk chocolate stars, malt flavoured pieces and a chocolate sauce.
