Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal reaches crucial stage with final calls for transfer

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Viktor Gyokeres is looking to depart Sporting CP this summer with interest from Arsenal and Juventus amid the striker's row with his current club over the fee for his signature
Juventus have reached out to Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres' representatives, in order to better understand the forward's transfer position amid his fallout with his current club. The Swede is top of the Italian side's shortlist as general manager Damien Comolli attempts to sign a striker.
Gyokeres is currently in conflict with Sporting and believes the club are reneging on an agreement to sell him for €60million plus €10m in add-ons (£51m plus £8.5m). Instead the Portuguese giants are holding out for €80m (£68m).

Juventus could yet find that Arsenal could prove the biggest obstacle in securing a deal for the goalscorer, who bagged 54 goals in 52 appearances. Gyokeres is currently on holiday amidst the row, but the Gunners are reported to have a basic understanding with Cetinkaya.

The Serie A giants were ready to offer Gyokeres a stunning £11m-per-year deal to try and persuade Gyokeres to head to Turin. However, Corriere dello Sport claim the Italian side have been informed that Gyokeres only wants to join Arsenal this summer.
Gyokeres may not yet get his own way however, with the Gunners also eyeing a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. The north London side have long targeted the Slovenian forward and look set to act upon that this summer.
Sesko is understood to have agreed personal terms with Arsenal, and the Bundesliga side are prepared to sell the forward after missing out on Champions League qualification. But Leipzig are only prepared to part ways if they receive a fee north of £60m.
Sesko was linked with a transfer to Arsenal in 2024 as well, only to sign a new contract instead. That deal runs until 2029 as the Gunners attempt to come to an agreement. Mirror Football understands that, of the two strikers, Sesko is Mikel Arteta's preferred option.
Arsenal's progress with Sesko could make or break Juventus' move for Gyokeres. As a result, the Old Lady is waiting before moving on to their plan b in case they find themselves in pole position.
Juve's back-up is said to be a move for Victor Osimhen. The Nigeria international is expected to departed Napoli this summer after failing to get a permanent move last summer, when he moved on loan to Galatasaray.

Flamengo vs Chelsea – Club World Cup LIVE SCORE: Neto fires Blues ahead in thrilling match against Jorginho and Co

Fine form Flamengo are currently unbeaten in nine matches across all competitions and have only lost one of their last 20 Serie A matches stretching back to last season. They have also kept four straight clean sheets. Jorginho only completed his transfer earlier this month and made his debut in the Club World Cup Giorgian de Arrascaeta has 13 goals in all comps this season, including one in the win over ES Tunis. He has 56 caps for Uruguay but has never played outside of South America. As well as Jorginho, there's another familiar face amongst the Flamengo contingent. They are managed by former Chelsea left-back Filipe Luis. The defender spent only a single season with the Blues, playing a reserve role under Jose Mourinho, but helped the club win the 2014-15 League Cup and Premier League.

Liverpool sign Florian Wirtz - will 'future Ballon d'Or winner' be worth it?

What once threatened to be a destabilising summer for Liverpool is now looking like a transformational one. With Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk's futures assured and an exciting replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold in Jeremie Frimpong already in place, many of Liverpool's most pressing concerns have already been addressed. A footballer who is the envy of Europe has now arrived Anfield with the Premier League champions avoiding the fatal mistake of standing still in the transfer window having made their way back to the top. Florian Wirtz is not coming cheap. In a deal worth a guaranteed £100million plus £16m in add-ons, he becomes the most expensive sale in Bundesliga history and the most expensive signing in Liverpool history. If those add-ons are achieved, he will become the most expensive signing in Premier League history. The move was officially confirmed on Friday night, with Wirtz unveiled in Liverpool red for the first time. 'Finally it's done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it's done and I am really happy,' Wirtz said. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.' With the deal now officially done, you can start to ask what exactly are Liverpool getting for their money? Wirtz, while right-footed, is primarily a left-sided attacking midfielder but shines across the final third, on the wing, in central roles and on the right. He has grown into one the Bundesliga's most devastating talents, a player regarded as the beating heart of the German national team alongside Jamal Musiala for years to come. The stats behind his rise are impressive. Only Jeremy Doku has attempted more forward passes than Wirtz across the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A in the season just gone. Able to effortlessly glide past the opposition, he has completed the most dribbles in Germany ahead of Musiala and Michael Olise. Only one other player has registered more than 10 goals and 10 assists in each of the last two seasons – his future teammate, Mohamed Salah. Dominik Szoboszlai was brought to Liverpool two summers ago. While a very useful addition, one highly-rated by Arne Slot, he does not possess the ability on the ball to effortlessly break lines like the German does. The variety in his work on the ball is what separates him from other creative midfielders across the continent – disguised passes, flicks and using the outside of his boot are all part of his impressive repertoire. Florian Wirtz is a player who has time and again proven to be a game changer for Bayer Leverkusen. When he's on the pitch, the players can always rely on him to produce moments of magic to combine with team-mates or take responsibility on his own to find the back of the net and score goals. Given his age and the incredible growth he's shown in the last two seasons, that massive fee feels justified for a player who has pivotal in Leverkusen's unbeaten season, finally dethroning Bayern Munich in doing so. I think it might be premature to expect an instant impact from Wirtz in the Premier League. However, that's not to say that he isn't ready for the pace of Premier League football. I think a playmaker of his qualities is about as ready as he can be for such a step. But in time, he will be tormenting defences with his trickery, his vision and goal-scoring. Ninad Barbadikar, German football expert While at his most effective further up the pitch, Wirtz has demonstrated his ability to drop deep and drive forward himself. Sat in front of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, a midfield partnership that blossomed at Liverpool last season, Wirtz will have room to cause havoc. 'Wirtz thrives best when he is involved across all phases in the game,' German football expert Ninad Barbadikar told Metro. 'Though he is generally considered an attacking midfielder, it isn't uncommon to see Wirtz drop deep to collect the ball, sometimes from the centre-backs as well. He is an excellent carrier of the ball and his deft touches allow him to have the advantage in most 1vs1 duels. 'For Arne Slot at Liverpool, I see Wirtz slotting seamlessly into the number 10 spot ahead of the double pivot and dictating the flow of Liverpool's attacks with his vision and intelligence in the final third.' Wirtz hit 18 goals and 20 assists in Bayer Leverkusen's title-winning 2023-24 campaign, maintaining that output with 16 and 15 last term. It's easy to see why he was coveted by Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City. But his commitment to the cause is another factor in why Slot and Liverpool's recruitment department have been so desperate to bring him to Merseyside. Diligent and intelligent pressing from the front has been a hallmark of his game away from the creative side of things with only Michael Olise winning possession in the attacking third more often than Wirtz last season. 'I just have the physique to get into lots of challenges. I give everything in every game for us to win', Wirtz said in a recent interview. 'So I also look for challenges or run back because that's part of helping my team be successful. I want to give my all and run until I can't anymore.' With the days of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's dominance long gone, the battle for the Ballon d'Or is once again a wide-open race with Lamine Yamal and Desire Doue perhaps two young stars most primed for future supremacy. Wirtz however will have other plans. 'I've always said this about him. He is absolutely a future Ballon d'Or winner,' Barbadikar said. 'I expect that to happen for him in the next two to three seasons. He's just that good.' Kevin De Bruyne has held the title of the Premier League's best midfielder for the better part of a decade. But City's decision to let the Belgian leave has opened the door for a successor to step up. More Trending There is good reason City explored a move for Wirtz before deciding the terms of a proposed deal were too rich for their blood. In Rayan Cherki, Pep Guardiola's side will hope to have signed their own creative genius for a quarter of the price. But it's their biggest domestic rivals who may have brought the true heir to the throne. 'The standard and quality of his technique, vision and passing makes a comparison to Kevin de Bruyne very straightforward,' Barbadikar said. 'He's got all those tools if not the same physicality just yet. I think there's also some hints of Thiago Alcantara about him, in the way he controls the ball and his measured touches whenever in possession. Those two players come to my mind immediately in terms of a direct comparison.' Living up to the price tag is a burden that has proved too heavy for many – including a former member of the Liverpool parish in Philippe Coutinho. But in joining an-already fearsome Liverpool machine, the platform is there for Wirtz to hit the ground running. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Mike Lynch's sunken yacht glimpsed above surface ahead of being fully raised

Seven people died when the Bayesian sank off the coast of the Italian island on August 19, including billionaire Mr Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18. The 56-metre (184ft) yacht is set to be lifted to the surface near the fishing town of Porticello over the weekend before being taken to nearby Termini Imerese — where Italian prosecutors investigating the sinking are based. On Friday, parts of the accommodation areas above deck and the hull were seen above the surface as teams worked to install additional lifting straps before the yacht was lowered back under the waterline ahead of being fully raised at the weekend. Investigators in the UK and Italy say raising the vessel is crucial to fully understanding what happened. Last week, salvage teams expected the boat to be raised later in June, but thanks to 'accelerated progress', the timeline was brought forward. The yacht's 72-metre (236ft) mast was cut off on Tuesday using a remote-controlled tool and rested on the seabed to be picked up later. Over the last few days, salvage teams worked to ease the hull into an upright position and give access to the yacht's right side, which had previously been lying flat on the seabed 50 metres below the surface. The yacht is currently supported by strong steel straps attached to Hebo Lift 10 — one of Europe's most powerful sea cranes. If all goes to plan, sea water will be pumped out of the hull as the boat is raised to the surface before being carried to Termini Imerese on Monday, where it will be lifted onto a specially made steel cradle on the quayside. Marcus Cave of British firm TMC Marine, which is overseeing the salvage efforts, said: 'The salvage team has made very substantive progress in the last 10 days. 'They are now preparing for the final, complex and delicate lifting operation, to bring Bayesian to the surface and ultimately into port.' The vessel was originally expected to be raised last month but salvage efforts were delayed after a diver died during underwater work on May 9, prompting greater use of remote-controlled equipment. About 70 specialist personnel had been mobilised to the fishing village of Porticello from across Europe to work on the recovery operation, which began last month. Inquest proceedings in the UK are looking at the deaths of Mr Lynch and his daughter, as well as Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71, who were all British nationals. Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) investigators said in an interim report that the Bayesian was knocked over by 'extreme wind'. The yacht had a vulnerability to winds but the owner and crew would not have known, the report said. US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, and Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the vessel, also died in the sinking. Fifteen people, including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued. Mr Lynch and his daughter were said to have lived in the vicinity of London and the Bloomers lived in Sevenoaks in Kent. The tycoon founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was cleared in June last year of carrying out a massive fraud over the sale of the firm to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011. The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal in the case in the US.
