Greg Cannom, Oscar-winning Makeup Innovator Who Turned Brad Pitt Into Benjamin Button, Dies at 73

Greg Cannom, a five-time Oscar-winning makeup and prosthetics artist celebrated for the incredible transformations of Robin Williams in 'Mrs. Doubtfire' (1993) and Brad Pitt in 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), died on May 3 at the age of 73.
Cannom's death was announced by his former mentor and longtime collaborator Rick Baker. The two famously worked together on several projects, including Michael Jackson's 1982 'Thriller' music video and the 1977 science-fiction film 'The Incredible Melting Man.'

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 706 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild also announced Cannom's passing in a poignant message on Facebook on Thursday.
A GoFundMe page launched for expenses said he experienced health challenges for two years, including 'severe shingles, a staph infection, sepsis and heart failure.'
Born in Los Angeles, Cannom was mystified by the world of motion pictures from a young age, finding a particular interest in horror films. He even called himself a 'monster geek.'
It wasn't until he attended Cypress College in Orange County when he began his training in stage makeup, learning the ins and outs while working on around 200 plays. By age 25, Cannom had landed a job as Baker's assistant, the artist best known for his work in 'Star Wars.' Their first project together was the 1978 'It's Alive sequel, It Lives Again,' creating baby monster prosthetics.
Cannom and Baker later brought to life many legendary characters, including Jim Carrey's green alter-ego in 'The Mask' (1994) and Gloria Stuart's 101-year-old persona in 'Titanic' (1997).
Indeed, turning Stuart into a 101-year-old lady in 'Titanic' was nothing like the aghast characters he'd constructed before. Yet, it was projects like this that helped solidify his reputation as an irrevocable makeup architect that could not only produce the inconceivable, but master realistic visions, too.
Cannom also transformed brother duo Marlon and Shawn Wayans into white female twins with blond hair in 2004's 'White Chicks' and reconstructed Danny DeVito's hands to look like penguin feet in 1992's 'Batman Returns.'
For more complicated jobs, Cannom would enlist up to 20 assistants to help him handle intricate facial molds. He advised on every detail and every facial expression, pointing out tiny changes that build an entirely new visage.
Cannom later landed a job on the film 'Vice,' as a character makeup designer — the project that secured him his final Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling in 2019.

Carlos Ponce Joins MariVi the Master Navigator as the Voice of Papá in Breakout Animated Series Now Streaming on Nuestra.TV and YouTube

[Media: Access more images and video HERE] LOS ANGELES, June 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Emmy-winning actor, Latin Grammy nominated artist, and international screen star Carlos Ponce has joined the animated children's series MariVi the Master Navigator, as the voice of Papá, a hard-working and loving immigrant father. The series, now streaming for free on and YouTube (@WeAreMariVi), recently surpassing 100,000+ subscribers, brings to life the emotional nuance of growing up between two cultures – a Latino and an American one. Rooted in the acclaimed work of Maria (Lopez) Twena, MariVi the Master Navigator tells the powerful story of a first-generation Hispanic family learning to call America home. Through the eyes of MariVi — a resourceful bilingual/bicultural daughter — the series shines a light on the quiet heroism of Latino children of immigrants who serve as interpreters and cultural ambassadors, shaping the future of their families and communities. 'Navigating two cultures can be incredibly challenging, particularly for the Hispanic community, where collectivism and self-reliance often stand in contrast,' said Twena. 'In MariVi the Master Navigator, each character brings their own strength as they adapt to new surroundings, a new language, and an unfamiliar world. It was essential that the voice of Papá, as the head of the household, felt authentic. We're incredibly grateful to have found that voice in Carlos.' 'Papá isn't just a supporting character, he's the foundation,' said Carlos Ponce. 'He reminds me of the fathers I grew up around: hardworking, proud, sometimes stubborn, but full of heart. I saw parts of my own life in him. It's a character that feels deeply real, and I'm honored to give him a voice.' The casting of Ponce, whose work spans blockbuster films (Julie & the Phantoms, Murder Mystery 2, Couples Retreat), hit TV series (Santa Diabla, 7th Heaven), animated hits (Rio, Ice Age: Collision Course), the Spanish-language narration of all Harry Potter Audible books, and chart-topping Latin Albums, adds star power and legitimacy to a project that champions representation and cultural pride. Ponce's voice performance is a timely tribute to immigrant fathers whose quiet sacrifices often go unseen. With Father's Day approaching, his role as Papá offers a heartfelt celebration of their love, strength, and everyday heroism. More information on and @wearemarivi on social media. Kendrick Lamar & SZA's ‘Luther' Breaks Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

After each individually holding the record, Kendrick Lamar and SZA combine forces to claim the longest-running No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as their collaboration 'Luther' reaches an unprecedented 23rd week at the top. The crowning feat, on the list dated June 7, dates to the chart becoming the singular standard genre survey in October 1958. With its 23rd week at No. 1, 'Luther' breaks from the tie it set last week with Lamar's 'Not Like Us.' The Grammy-winning anthem scored 22 weeks in charge in 2024-25: 21 amid its summer 2024 run and its final frame this February following its much-discussed performance at the halftime show of Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9. Before that, SZA's 'Kill Bill' was the titleholder thanks to its 21-week domination in 2022-23. As 'Luther' rewrites the record books and Lamar and SZA claim gold, silver and bronze, here are the songs with the most weeks at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart since its 1958 consolidation into a singular genre survey: Most Weeks at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: 23, 'Luther,' Kendrick Lamar & SZA, 2024-25 22, 'Not Like Us,' Kendrick Lamar, 2024-25 21, 'Kill Bill,' SZA, 2022-23 20, 'Old Town Road,' Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, 2019 18, 'Industry Baby,' Lil Nas X & Jack Harlow, 2021-22 18, 'One Dance,' Drake feat. Wizkid & Kyla, 2016 16, 'Blurred Lines,' Robin Thicke feat. T.I. + Pharrell, 2013 15, 'Be Without You,' Mary J. Blige, 2006 The record secured, 'Luther' looks to a clear runway to keep extending its domination on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The track has ruled for the last 15 consecutive weeks — its last time outside the top spot was when 'Not Like Us' rebounded after the Super Bowl — and has fended off the same No. 2 challenger, Drake's 'Nokia,' for the last 10 frames. Given the declining activity in all songs in the top 10 — the sole track gaining in activity this week 'Not Like Us,' at No. 6 — the most plausible scenario for 'Luther' surrendering the No. 1 rank soon is the strong arrival of a superstar's new single. Elsewhere, 'Luther' rolls to a 23rd week at No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs, nearing the 26-week record for 'Not Like Us.' On the Billboard Hot 100, 'Luther' repeats at No. 5 after having ruled the ranking for 13 weeks in March-May, the longest for any song in Lamar or SZA's catalog. Watch Jennifer Lopez spin a fantastical web in teaser for 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'

Jennifer Lopez is making a bold new move in her career. The multi-hyphenate star is at the center of the teaser trailer for Kiss of the Spider Woman, a film adaptation of the 1993 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical hit from Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon. Lopez plays Ingrid Luna/the Spider Woman, a fictional silver screen diva who brings dazzling technicolor into the bleak life of prisoner Molina (Tonatiuh Elizarraraz), a window dresser convicted of public indecency. The film switches from Molina's harsh reality to a fantastical, musical utopia as he recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical to his cellmate, Valentín (Diego Luna), a political prisoner. Set to John Kander and Fred Ebb's — the legendary duo behind Chicago and Cabaret — award-winning score and a book by Tony Award winner Terrence McNally, Condon's adaptation draws inspiration from the Broadway musical and the acclaimed 1976 novel of the same name by Argentinian writer Manuel Puig. The Broadway musical won seven Tony awards, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Chita Rivera, who originated the role of the Spider Woman. Condon's adaptation isn't the only time the Spider Woman has made her way to the big screen. Héctor Babenco directed the first film adaptation of the novel, which premiered in 1985. The critically acclaimed film starred William Hurt, Raúl Juliá, and Sônia Braga. Hurt won the Best Actor award when the film premiered at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Actor. Babenco became the first Brazilian filmmaker to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Director, and the film was the first Brazilian production to receive a nod for Best Picture. It also received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. Lopez is not only the star of the film, but also serves as an executive producer alongside Luna, her ex-husband Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and 12 others. The movie debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival back in January and received a standing ovation from the audience, which reportedly left Lopez in tears. The mother of two previously opened up about taking the role during an interview with Variety's Awards Circuit podcast in November. She called it "the most challenging and rewarding role I've ever had." "It's a dark story, but also one about love and survival — about helping each other through hard times," Lopez added. "I think that's a message we really need right now." She recalled Kander being with her in the studio when she recorded her songs. "He's [98] years old and still so full of life," Lopez said. "Hearing him say, 'I've never heard this song sung better' — it was one of the best moments of my career." Kiss of the Spider Woman is set to premiere in theaters Oct. 10.
