Ludhiana: AAP leader and cabinet minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond Sunday strongly condemned the statement of Akali Dal chief
Sukhbir Singh Badal
about only a CM who wields a 'danda' can solve people's problems.
In a press meet here, Sond said, "Our CM
Bhagwant Mann
uses the danda against drug traffickers, land mafia, and gangsters, while Sukhbir Badal used it against common people. Mann takes action against anyone who attempts to disturb the law and order of Punjab."
He further said, "The Akali Dal has been reduced to just three seats, and even those seats are slipping away from them because the Akali Dal used the danda against Sikh sangat seeking justice, against teachers, and against unemployed youth."
Sond asked, "What was the fault of those people in Behbal Kalan who were shot during your regime? Was it not under your govt that the sacrilege of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji happened? You admitted your mistakes at Shri Akal Takht Sahib."
He said Sukhbir Badal spared nothing, and played with the faith of millions. "People thought he changed after apologising, but he didn't. To further his political gains, he removed a capable jathedar in the middle of the night and replaced them with their loyal ones. Does Badal think Punjab's people do not understand all this?"

‘People want a reliable regional party': Bikram Singh Majithia on SAD revival and AAP's ‘failures'

As political heat rises in the Assembly bypoll-bound Ludhiana West constituency, senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia is actively campaigning for SAD candidate Parupkar Singh Ghumman. Ahead of the June 19 bypoll, Majithia discusses the party's revival efforts, the return of leaders, criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, and the possibility of a future alliance between the SAD and the BJP. Bikram Singh Majithia: The campaign is progressing well, and the public response to our candidate, Parupkar Singh Ghumman, has been overwhelmingly positive. Several senior SAD leaders, including Sikander Singh Maluka, Sohan Singh Thandal, and Anil Joshi, have rejoined the party during this campaign. We have also welcomed several new members. This wave of support shows that people are eager to strengthen Punjab's oldest regional party. Bikram Singh Majithia: No doubt, ruling parties usually enjoy an advantage in bypolls — that has been the case historically, whether under SAD-BJP or Congress governments. However, this time, there is palpable public anger against the AAP government over unfulfilled promises. These include the Rs 1,000 monthly allowance for women above 18, the non-implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for government employees, and the failure to provide adequate employment opportunities. The list goes on. Moreover, it is evident that Arvind Kejriwal, the former Delhi CM, has reduced Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann to a mere rubber stamp. It was Kejriwal, not the Punjab CM, who announced that Sanjeev Arora, the AAP's Ludhiana West candidate, would be made a minister if he won. Normally, such cabinet decisions should be announced by the chief minister — this shows how insecure the ruling party is. They seem to be trailing and are trying to lure voters with last-minute promises. But the voters are no longer gullible — they have seen through these gimmicks. We fear that between June 17 and 19, the AAP might resort to unfair means, including intimidation of Opposition workers, in desperation to get Arora elected, possibly to vacate his Rajya Sabha seat for Arvind Kejriwal. Bikram Singh Majithia: That is not for me to decide. However, historically, the SAD-BJP alliance has worked very well in maintaining communal harmony in Punjab. When the alliance was formed in 1996 under the leadership of Parkash Singh Badal from the SAD and Atal Bihari Vajpayee from the BJP, it brought great relief to the people of Punjab. However, under current circumstances, our focus remains on reviving and strengthening our regional party, the SAD. Bikram Singh Majithia: Several leaders have already returned to the party this month, and many more are expected to rejoin in the coming weeks. We are on our way to becoming a united Akali Dal once again. I appeal to all those still outside the party to set aside personal ambitions and come together to strengthen our shared platform. Our goal must be the welfare of Punjab, not individual egos. The state's condition under the AAP regime is deteriorating rapidly. Punjab has incurred a record Rs 1 lakh crore debt under this government, pushing the total debt to Rs 4 lakh crore. We are in a financial emergency — the government has begun withdrawing funds from departments to avoid defaulting on loans. This has led to a complete halt in developmental work. At this critical juncture, we must rise above differences and reunite under one banner — the SAD. People are looking for a party they can trust. For the sake of Punjab, Punjabi, and Punjabiyat, unity is the need of the hour. And I'm confident that day is not far.

Punjab political leaders against ‘One Nation, One Election' proposal

The 'One Nation, One Election' (ONOE) proposal promoted by the BJP-led Central government, which seeks to hold simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State/Union Territory Legislative Assemblies, has sparked significant debate in Punjab amid concerns over weakening of federalism, regional autonomy and democratic principles. On June 14, members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ONOE met leaders of political parties of the State in Chandigarh. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Indian National Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) firmly expressed their reservations to the proposal and opposed the idea of ONOE. The SAD, a century-old party, highlighted several concerns and pointed out that the proposed Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, would weaken the State's autonomy. 'The Bill would cause more harm than improvement. Article 356 was the root cause of the disruption of simultaneous elections in the country. In case Article 356 is not done away with, the election schedule would be disrupted again, so what's the point of this Bill? Also, the insertion of Article 82 A clause 5 empowers the Election Commission of India to defer elections to Legislative Assemblies. This can be misused against opposition parties anytime,' it said. Opposing the idea of ONOE, the Congress's leaders, including State president Amarinder Singh and Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, presented the party's case before the committee. 'One Nation, One Election goes against the basic concept of federalism that has been guaranteed by the Constitution of India,' the State president said, pointing out that parliamentary and Assembly elections were held on entirely different issues. 'The idea of imposing simultaneous elections to Parliament and the State Assemblies will mean imposing dictatorship by default. The regional and local issues that gain prominence during the Assembly elections will be ignored and suppressed. The regional and local aspirations will get muzzled down,' Mr. Singh said. Strong objections The ruling AAP in Punjab raised strong objections to ONOE, terming it 'a direct assault on the fundamental structure and spirit of the Constitution of India'. Pointing out that the proposed Bill would effectively render the tenures of State Assemblies subject to the discretion of the Union government, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the BJP's attempt was an alarming overreach incompatible with the federal framework enshrined in the Constitution. Mr. Cheema said the proposals in the Bill would destabilise the balance of power essential to India's democratic fabric. 'The One Nation, One Election Bill proposed by the BJP is a calculated move to eliminate regional parties that represent diverse cultures, languages, and regions, and serve as the backbone of Indian democracy.' BJP leaders, meanwhile, argue that simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State/Union Territory Legislative Assemblies would reduce election-related expenses and boost governance continuity.

Young and innocent minds fed with

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): International President of World Punjabi Organisation and RS MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney on Monday condemned the alleged act of young Jatt kids kicking posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on social media X, Singh shared a video purportedly originating in Canada showing young children kicking a truck with pictures of PM Modi and wrote that it was 'unfortunate' that young and tender innocent minds were fed with hate instead of hope. He further wrote in his post that children should be imbued with the moral values emphasised by Guru Sahib. 'As International President of World Punjabi Organisation, I strongly condemn this act. It is deeply unfortunate when young, tender and innocent minds are fed with hate instead of hope. Let us imbibe in our children the moral values emphasised by our Guru sahib and that is ' Jb Tk Duniya Rahiye Nanak Kuch Suniye Kuch Kahiye'. Solution of all the issues is in dialogue,' the post read. He further stated that one should not forget that under the leadership of PM Modi, India was able to take various decisions, including the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor and the Hemkunt Sahib ropeway. 'Let's also not forget Government of India's various decisions under PM Modi's leadership like opening up of Kartarpur Corridor, Hemkunt Sahib Ropeway, Setting up SITs for 1984 anti Sikh genocide Victims, Slashing of blacklisting and visa clearance for Overseas Sikhs who were wrongly barred, granting FCRA registration to Sri Darbar Sahbir enabling global Sangat to do Seva, waiving office GST on Langar items, celebrating 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and 400th of Guru Teg Bahadur ji at large scale are some positive and constructive gestures towards Sikh sentiments,' the post read. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, in a post on X also condemned the alleged act and stated that every Sikh was 'deeply disturbed' and 'ashamed' to see the unlike-Sikh incident against a leader who constantly showed up for the ethos of Sikhism. In his post, Sirsa wrote that the incident was not the 'spirit of Sikhism' but the 'influence of individuals with dangerous agendas.' 'Every Sikh is deeply disturbed and ashamed to see this unlike-Sikh incident in Canada, where children are inflicting such hatred. And that too against a leader who has consistently shown deep respect for the ethos of Sikhism. What we are witnessing is not the spirit of Sikhism but the influence of some individuals with dangerous agendas. These aren't true representatives of our faith; they appear to be ISI-influenced agents who aren't shying away from radicalising youth or children. They are promoting hate, with a sinister goal of isolating Sikhs globally and tarnishing our reputation. We condemn this behaviour in the strongest possible terms. It is time for all Sikhs, especially those in the diaspora, to stand up against this distortion of our identity and teachings,' the post read. Sirsa further mentioned that Sikhs were ever grateful to PM Modi for all that he had done for the community. 'Sikhs in India are ever grateful to Modi Ji for all that he has done for the community... from the opening of Kartarpur Corridor to celebrating Guru Purabs with such devotion and commemorating the heroic deeds of Sahibzades. He is the one who organised the historic celebration at the Red Fort. He is one who ensured the safe return of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from Afghanistan. He is the one who understood the pain of the 1984 genocide and ensured justice for the victim families,' the post further read. (ANI)
