Naka, known for her role in Netflix's hit series 'Alice in Borderland' and films including 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,' plays celebrity plastic surgeon Rin Tohyama, who believes beauty offers a path to salvation. She'll clash with Matsuoka's character Fumi Numata, a dedicated doctor who reluctantly transitions from life-saving general surgery to the aesthetic medicine world.
Matsuoka, whose film credits include the Palme d'Or winner 'Shoplifters' and 'Tremble All You Want,' portrays a physician whose medical ideals are tested when forced into cosmetic surgery practice.
The series explores themes of transformation and self-perception through the lens of Japan's booming aesthetic medicine sector. Patients seeking physical perfection become caught between the conflicting philosophies of the two medical professionals, creating a backdrop for examining societal beauty standards and personal identity.
Yuki Saito will helm the project, bringing experience from the medical drama 'Unmet: A Neurosurgeon's Diary.' Junya Ikegami penned the original screenplay, continuing his collaboration with Netflix Japan following 'The Queen of Villains.' His previous work includes 'The Blood of Wolves.'
The production team features several veterans from recent Netflix Japan hits. Harue Miyake, who produced 'Tokyo Swindlers,' returns alongside Katsuhito Motegi, director of 'The Queen of Villains.' Shinichi Kudo serves as development producer, with K2 Pictures handling production duties.
'This story explores both the light and dark sides of the increasingly popular world of plastic surgery,' Saito said. 'By depicting the inner conflicts behind the pursuit of beauty, I hope we can present a broader spectrum of values. The creative team conducted extensive research into Japan's contemporary cosmetic surgery landscape to develop authentic storylines that reflect current industry practices and patient experiences.
Producer Miyake said: 'Today, plastic surgery is no longer a rare choice. The possibility of becoming more beautiful can be both empowering and imprisoning. Rather than glorifying cosmetic surgery, this series focuses on the emotional struggles that lie in the space between what can be changed and what cannot. It is told from both the doctor's and the patient's perspectives. The story also explores the unspoken pressures and difficulties of living in a society with rigid expectations. At its core, it is a tale of sisterhood — women coming together and finding strength in one another.'
Netflix's investment in 'Plastic Beauty' continues the streamer's strategy of tackling controversial social topics through Japanese original content. Previous series have examined the adult entertainment industry in 'The Naked Director' and real estate fraud in 'Tokyo Swindlers.'

Pluto TV's free true crime channel may keep you up until 3 a.m. (and it's worth it)
We've all fallen down a true crime rabbit hole at some point. Maybe it started with a podcast, a "Dateline" episode or that one docuseries all your friends were talking about. For me, it started as background noise while I recovered from a broken ankle. What was supposed to be a quick glance while attempting to work turned into a full-blown obsession, and it's all thanks to the Pluto TV's true crime channel. If you haven't heard of it, Pluto TV is one of the best free streaming services out there. It offers live channels and on-demand content across genres, from reality TV to movies, classic sitcoms, and yes, a whole channel dedicated to true crime. Best of all, it's totally free, supported by ads, and you don't even need to create an account to start watching. Just download the app or go to the website, pick a channel, and start streaming. There are dozens to choose from, but here's why I'm locked into the true crime channel. There are over a dozen reasons that I can't stop watching, and they mostly stem from the kinds of content on rotation with this channel. There's a steady rotation of episodes from shows like "Forensic Files," "Cold Case Files," "Dominick Dunne's Power, Privilege, and Justice" and "Unsolved Mysteries." You might start watching one to kill time, but before you know it, you've watched six in a row and have very strong opinions about forensic luminol. It's that always-on format that makes it so easy to leave it running, so that's what I do. There's something deeply nostalgic about binge-watching on Pluto TV. Unlike Netflix or HBO Max, where you select specific titles to watch, it feels more like flipping through cable channels in the early 2000s, when I grew up watching whatever was on TV — which usually included true crime series and documentaries. Whoever programmed this channel knows exactly what kind of viewers they're attracting. These aren't slow-paced crime procedurals. The shows here get straight to the point: There's a dead body. There's a detective. There's a suspect who 'wasn't acting quite right.' And soon enough, there's a lab technician saying something chilling like, "It turned out the fibers matched." And all of those elements add up to a satisfying story that you want to follow, even when it's late at night. New on Netflix — 7 top shows and movies this week
Another week, another slew of new shows and movies coming to Netflix. In a twist, though, many of the biggest shows and movies coming to the streaming service this week are not Netflix originals. There are still a few, but the biggest names are licensed titles: "Outlander" season 7 part 1, "Sullivan's Crossing" season 3 and several of the "The Fast and the Furious" movies. Still, several Netflix originals are dropping this week that are must-watches. "Night Always Comes" is a new crime thriller starring Vanessa Kirby, sure to dominate the Netflix Top 10 when it debuts this Friday. Reality TV show fans will be logging on a few days earlier to catch "Love is Blind: UK" season 2 when it premieres on Aug. 13. "Night Always Comes" stars Vanessa Kirby as Lynette, a Portland woman who is trying to take care of Kenny, her older brother with Down Syndrome. So when her mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) spends money on a new car instead of the house, Lynette is driven to desperation. She steals a car belonging to an acquaintance (possibly a client) and goes on a wild journey through the Portland underworld to get $25,000 in a single night. Having watched the trailer, "Night Always Comes" looks like it will deliver on the tension you want from a crime thriller. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 15 Netflix is adding seven "The Fast and the Furious" movies on Saturday, including the spin-off "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw." But if you're only going to watch one of the movies in the franchise, it has to be the first one. "The Fast and the Furious" (2001) stars Paul Walker as LAPD officer Brian O'Conner. He's been assigned to go undercover and infiltrate a street racing gang suspected of robbing several semitrucks on local highways. To get in the crew, he'll need to impress Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), and that means he'll need a fast car. Is this movie basically a "Point Break" remake? Well ... yes. But even though it's still not quite as good as Kathryn Bigelow's masterpiece, it's still a great action movie and genuinely one of my favorite movies to watch. Don't miss your chance to watch, or rewatch it, now that it's on Netflix. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 16 If you're a Netflix reality show fan, you're probably familiar with the concept of "Love is Blind." A group of singles enters the show looking for love, but there's a catch: they can't actually look at their potential mate. Instead, they need to develop an emotional connection, entering pods to get each other without ever seeing each other until they're ready to get engaged and live together for a trial run before marriage. "Love is Blind: U.K." takes that same premise and applies it to singles in the British Isles. This season, the singles range in age from 26 to 37 and include a dating app founder (how ironic), a gaming entrepreneur, a professional dancer, a DJ, a certified genius and more. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 13 Watching new episodes of "Outlander" remains one of the few reasons to have a Starz subscription. But if you're patient, you can just wait for the episodes to come to Netflix instead. For those of you who have never seen the incredible period drama, it stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall. Claire is a former World War II military nurse who suddenly finds herself transported back in time to 1743. Once she's there, she encounters Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Highland warrior allied with Clan Fraser of Lovat. Jamie happens to be easy on the eyes, so eventually the two marry. But once they're united, they become entangled in one conflict after another, from the Jacobite rising to (now) the beginnings of the American Revolution. Whether you love romance or historical fiction, "Outlander" has something for you. Watch it now on Netflix "Sullivan's Crossing" is based on the popular novel series by Robyn Carr, and the first two seasons became a surprise hit for Netflix last month. It stars Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan, a Boston-area neurosurgeon who finds herself returning to her hometown of Sullivan's Crossing in rural Nova Scotia after getting in some legal trouble. The show follows Maggie as her career is upended and she begins to reconnect with her estranged father, Harry "Sully" Sullivan (Scott Patterson). She also begins to connect with California "Cal" Jones (Chad Michael Murray), a newcomer to the small camping town who doesn't have past baggage with Maggie. If you love a soapy romance show, this is your next binge-watch. Watch it now on Netflix "Tyler Perry's She the People" is no more ... because it's now "Miss Governor." But besides the name, nothing about the show has changed. It still stars Terri J. Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, the newly elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi. She's also still figuring out how to thrive while working with a sexist governor, keeping her family in line now that they're public figures and dealing with the complications of being a Black woman politician in a white man's world. Check out part two of the show's first season this week on Netflix. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 13 This may be an animated comedy movie, but it's definitely not for the kids. 'Fixed' is an adult animated comedy about Bull (Adam Devine), a dog whose world is about to be rocked. That's because Bull is about to lose his balls, aka he's getting fixed. So his dawgs are taking him out on the town for one last day of partying before he's a changed dog forever. The premise of "Fixed" may seem dumb, but it's pedigree is not. Aside from Devine, the movie stars the voices of Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn and Fred Armisen, among others. It's also written and directed by acclaimed animator Genndy Tartakovsky, who did the original "Clone Wars" series on Cartoon Network. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 13 AUGUST 11 AUGUST 12 "Final Draft" (JP) (Netflix series) Twenty-five athletes, most retired, compete to win 30M yen to launch their second career. "Fixed" (Netflix film) After learning he's getting neutered, a dog has 24 hours to squeeze in one last balls-to-the-wall adventure with the boys in this raunchy adult comedy. "Saare Jahan Se Accha: The Silent Guardians" (IN) (Netflix series) A resilient Indian spy must defeat his counterpart across the border in a battle of wits and tradecraft to sabotage their nuclear program.
