Kyle Filipowski named NBA Summer League MVP as tournament viewership rose 27%

Second-year Utah Jazz center Kyle Filipowski was crowned the 2025 NBA Summer League Most Valuable Player. After his rookie NBA season, the former Duke Blue Devil averaged 29.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in three games for the Jazz in Summer League. Filipowski shot 56.1% from the field and 39.1% from behind the 3-point line before the team opted to rest him for the rest of the schedule. Although Utah finished with a 1-4 record, the 21-year-old's performances proved sufficient to make him the first Jazz player to win the honor. Advertisement Filipowski was joined by Nique Clifford of the Kings, David Jones-Garcia of the Spurs, Jordan Miller of the Clippers and Terrance Shannon Jr. of the Timberwolves in the All-Summer League First Team. The Charlotte Hornets went on to win Summer League as the only team with a perfect 6-0 record. The summer slate proved to be a must-see with the likes of Filipowski, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and Bronny James all participating. According to ESPN, this year's Summer League averaged 255,000 viewers, a 27% improvement compared to last season. The finale between Charlotte and Sacramento on July 20 also rose 3% compared to 2024 with 420,000 average viewers. Advertisement Filipowski will hope to carry the momentum from the Summer League into the 2025-26 NBA season after averaging 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds in 72 games (27 starts) his rookie year. Flagg unsurprisingly drew much of the attention to the tournament despite his campaign lasting just two games. Still, the former Duke star averaged 20.5 points and 5 rebounds, including 31 points against the Spurs. Flagg's first game for Dallas became the fourth most-watched Summer League game in the competition's history. James also had a decent showing in Las Vegas, averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.8 steals in 24.3 minutes per game, shooting 47.6% from the field. Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever hold serve in WNBA Power Rankings after All-Star break

The second half of the WNBA season is upon us, and the Indiana Fever are looking to rattle off some wins to reclaim their spot among the league's best teams with a chance to make a deep postseason run. Unfortunately, Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark is being held out of their first action back from the All-Star break due to injury as she tries to recover for the stretch run. Without Clark, the Fever have been able to stay afloat, battling to a 12-11 record overall, which is not the most indicative of the talent lining their roster. Despite that, the Fever are holding serve in the most recent WNBA Power Rankings from ESPN, coming in at No. 4. 4. Indiana Fever (12-11) Previous ranking: 4 Next seven days: @ NY (July 22), vs. LV (July 24), @ CHI (July 27) How much of the season's second half will Caitlin Clark be able to play? She has been ruled out for Tuesday, which will mark the 11th regular-season game she's missed this year. She was also sidelined for the Commissioner's Cup final on July 1 and the All-Star Game. She is only 23 with many years ahead, so if her groin injury requires significant rest, it's possible the Fever could take a conservative approach and sit her indefinitely. - Michael Voepel, ESPN Caitlin Clark will miss the Indiana Fever's game against the New York Liberty tonight, July 22. Her next chance at a return comes on Thursday, July 24, when the Fever host the Las Vegas Aces. Should the Fever be extremely cautious with Caitlin Clark, her first action could be this upcoming weekend on July 27 when the Fever head to Chicago to take on Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. Kyle Filipowski becomes 1st Utah Jazz player to earn NBA Summer League MVP

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Kyle Filipowski became the first Utah Jazz player to earn most valuable player honors in the NBA Summer League on Tuesday. Filipowski, a 6-foot-11 forward out of Duke, averaged a league-leading 29.3 points per contest over three games while adding 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He shot 56.1% from the field and 39.1% from 3-point range. Advertisement His best summer league performance came against San Antonio on July 14th when he finished with 35 points and 11 rebounds. He's hoping to use his summer league experience as a springboard for the role he wants to play with the Jazz in his second NBA season. 'Obviously it's different in summer league versus (the regular season),' Filipowski said, following the third and final summer league game for the Jazz. 'I'm just trying to be myself out there right now. However that translates to the season, that's how it's going to be. I'm going to make the most of it in that way.' Filipowski appeared in 72 games in his rookie campaign with Utah, making 27 starts. He averaged 9.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 21.2 minutes per game. By season's end, Filipowski was one of only two NBA rookies to total more than 650 points, 400 rebounds and 100 assists. ___ AP NBA:
