Unity coalition in Melaka to resolve issues amicably, says state Deputy Speaker
The Melaka Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker said that both parties are committed to maintaining this framework.
"We will adhere to the model established by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to uphold our working relationship," he said on Wednesday (May 21) after officiating a Malaysia Book of Records ceremony at Cat Supermarket in Paya Rumput for providing free neutering services for 202 male cats.
Kerk, also the Melaka DAP Publicity Secretary, said all lawmakers from both political coalitions are committed to ensuring the success of the unity framework.
He said that while differences of opinion may arise among coalition partners, efforts will always be made to resolve them amicably.
The Ayer Keroh assemblyman responded to reporters' questions about a resolution passed by 15 Jasin DAP branches, supporting unity government candidates on the condition they refrain from engaging in 'extreme' politics that could divide the people.
The resolution was passed unanimously during the Jasin DAP Annual General Meeting on Saturday (May 17), attended by Melaka DAP Chairman Khoo Poay Tiong and Kerk himself.
Following the AGM, Jasin DAP released a statement affirming that all 15 branches would not tolerate any party or politician promoting hatred and division.
Kerk said that the statement was general and not directed at any individual politician, emphasising that it aimed to reject divisive politics.
"Hence, there is no need to start finger-pointing or challenging anyone to contest anywhere, as the statement didn't target anyone specifically," he added.
Earlier, Kerk said the mass neutering of male cats was commendable and encouraged responsible pet ownership.

Shahelmey yet to be briefed on Sabah election seats
KOTA KINABALU: Incumbent Tanjung Keramat assemblyman Datuk Shahelmey Yahya has yet to be called or briefed regarding the state seats for the upcoming Sabah election. "The announcements on the number of seats to be contested by Umno and Barisan Nasional are merely party leadership decisions. As of now, I have not been called for any briefing or meeting, although I am closely following political developments in Sabah ahead of the state polls," Shahelmy told reporters after concluding nine checkpoints for the Putatan Merdeka Convoy programme here. Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had said that the coalition had appointed both the BN secretary-general and the Umno secretary-general to hold discussions with their unity government counterparts regarding seat negotiations. Mohamad had previously indicated in Kimanis that BN aimed to contest at least one seat in every 25 parliamentary constituencies in Sabah. Shahelmey, who is also Putatan member of parliament, was reported to have had his party membership suspended after defying a directive by Sabah BN chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin in January 2023, and for allegedly betraying the party's struggle and mandate. At that time, Bung attempted to topple the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-led government by withdrawing support. However, the move — dubbed the Kinabalu Move — failed when several BN elected representatives, including Shahelmey, and seven Sabah PH leaders chose to remain with the existing government. In the 2020 state election, Shahelmey won Tanjung Keramat with a majority of 4,594 votes. Last year, Bung announced Putatan Umno chief Jeffery Noh as the candidate for Tanjung Keramat.

MIC confirms talks with Perikatan as party weighs its future, president says its direction not decided by grudges
KOTA TINGGI, Aug 17 — MIC has confirmed informal discussions with Perikatan Nasional (PN) as the party considers its future direction outside the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran said its leadership is reviewing its trajectory after motions from grassroots members in Kedah and Penang urged support for PN, Harian Metro reported yesterday. 'Yes, we acknowledge having informal discussions with PN regarding MIC's direction. MIC has nothing to hide (about discussions with PN), this is not a secret affair. MIC (leadership) will decide our own direction, but we hold no grudges against anyone,' Vigneswaran was quoted as saying in a press conference after the 79th Johor MIC delegates convention here. He highlighted that Malaysia's changing political landscape requires MIC to carefully plan its path to remain relevant. Last week, MIC leaders in Kedah, Penang, and Perak were reported to have approved motions to cooperate with PN, while not ruling out leaving BN. Vigneswaran said any decision will prioritise the Indian community and the party's future. 'Everyone must understand – the country's political dynamics have changed. If MIC refuses to accept this reality, we will disappear,' he was quoted as saying. 'MIC accepts that we are called weak, but it is strange that many still want to discuss this party – that is what we don't understand. Many analyses are made about MIC, many things are said, but we don't believe them. MIC only trusts our grassroots,' he added.

Teo: Media plays vital role in curbing fake news –
KUALA LUMPUR: The role of media practitioners, particularly journalists, is becoming increasingly important in curbing the spread of fake news, which is becoming more prevalent, especially through social media, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said trained journalists know their roles and responsibilities as Malaysian citizens to verify the authenticity of any news, thus ensuring the public can differentiate between fake and real news. She added that, as of Aug 1, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had requested 16,110 fake news content be taken down, which is an alarming increase compared to the 5,367 cases in 2023 and 17,245 cases in 2024. "Scammers are now increasingly clever in using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate fake videos and voices to deceive victims," she said at the launch of the 2025 Malaysian Tamil Media Organisation Annual General Meeting here. In addition, she said the public is easily duped when exposed to unverified information that is repeatedly shared across various social media platforms until it is eventually accepted as true. She cited the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir, which went viral after the Form One student died due to alleged bullying in school. "Social media was flooded with various accusations and fake information, including claims that she was put into a washing machine for two hours. Although police confirmed a few days ago that it was fake news, I believe many still think it happened. "So, this trend is unhealthy and dangerous if it is not curbed. It can cause public anxiety, especially since it is related to the safety of school students," she said. In addition, Teo said the Madani Government will continue implementing initiatives to combat fake news by introducing the Artificial Intelligence Fact-check Assistance (AIFA) chatbox by MCMC, which can analyse messages in various languages, including Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.
