Italy's Musetti moves on to third round at National Bank Open, Canada's Arseneault eliminated
TORONTO — Seeded players were in strong form in early play Tuesday at the National Bank Open men's tennis tournament.
Third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti of Italy beat Australian qualifier James Duckworth 7-5, 6-1 and Denmark's Holger Rune posted a 7-6 (7), 6-3 win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France on a hot, sunny afternoon at Sobeys Stadium.
"Very tricky first match for me because he's a big server and (there wasn't) a lot of rhythm in the match," Rune said. "I had to really take care of my own serve and then just look for the opportunities that I had."
Wild-card entry Nicolas Arseneault of Richmond Hill, Ont., dropped a 7-6 (7), 6-3 decision to defending champion and No. 18 seed Alexei Popyrin of Australia.
Russia's Karen Khachanov, the No. 11 seed, topped qualifier Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina 6-4, 6-2 and 26th-seeded American Alex Michelsen downed Chilean qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera 7-6 (7), 6-3.
Alexandre Muller of France, the No. 29 seed, outlasted Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In the evening session, 22nd-seeded Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., was scheduled to play American Learner Tien on centre court.
Top-seeded Alex Zverev of Germany was to meet Australia's Adam Walton in the late match.
Play at the Masters 1000 tournament continues through Aug. 7.

Taylor Fritz tops Andrey Rublev to make National Bank Open semifinals
TORONTO – Taylor Fritz blasted his way to the National Bank Open semifinal. The hard-serving No. 2 seed from the United States topped No. 6 Andrey Rublev of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Tuesday at Sobeys Stadium. Fritz, who finished with 20 aces, will next face the winner of the late quarterfinal between No. 4 Ben Shelton of the U.S. and No. 9 Alex de Minaur of Australia. Wednesday's other semifinal will see top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany — the 2017 tournament winner in Montreal — take on No. 11 Karen Khachanov of Russia. Clara Tauson advances to NBO semifinals with straight-sets win over Madison Keys
MONTREAL – Clara Tauson is heading to the National Bank Open semifinals. The 22-year-old from Denmark advanced to the final four with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Madison Keys of the United States in the women's singles quarterfinals Tuesday. Tauson, seeded 16th, dominated from start to finish, converting three of six breakpoint opportunities while saving all three she faced against the sixth-seeded Keys. Tauson also knocked out world No. 3 Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the fourth round and hasn't lost a set at the WTA 1000 event. The top eight seeds are now out of the 96-player tournament after Keys's exit. Tauson will face the winner of Tuesday's late match between No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine and Naomi Osaka of Japan at IGA Stadium. Canadian teenage sensation Victoria Mboko takes on ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the other semifinal Wednesday.
