Ryanair to fine ‘disruptive passengers' 500 euros
Irish no-frills airline Ryanair said Thursday it will fine 'disruptive passengers whose unruly behavior' results in their removal from aircraft 500 euros ($580).
Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers has previously hit out at 'unruly' behavior caused by travelers consuming excessive amounts of alcohol while waiting to board delayed flights.
'Ryanair is committed to tackling unruly passenger behavior for the benefit of its passengers and crew, and will continue to pursue disruptive passengers for civil damages, but at a minimum, they will now be issued with a 500-euro fine,' Ryanair said in a statement Thursday.
A spokesperson added that the penalty 'will be issued to any passengers offloaded from aircraft as a result of their misconduct.'
Ryanair in January said that it had incurred costs of 15,350 euros as a result of a 'disruptive passenger' on board a flight from Dublin to Lanzarote, in Spain's Canary Islands, last year.
This was because the plane had to divert to the Portuguese city of Porto, where the passenger was arrested, and the more than 160 other travelers on board were provided with overnight accommodation and meals.
Ryanair said it faced other costs, including the need for additional fuel and crew. The airline filed civil legal proceedings against the passenger in Ireland to recover its outlay.
At the same time, it called on the European Union to limit the sale of alcohol at airports.
Ryanair transported more than 200 million passengers in its last financial year to the end of March.
It forecasts that the number will rise to 300 million by 2034.

Violent Turbulence Hits Ryanair Flight in Germany, Injuring 9
Severe storms in southern Germany forced a Ryanair flight to make an emergency landing late Wednesday after violent turbulence injured nine people on board, German police said in a statement Thursday. The flight, traveling from Berlin to Milan with 179 passengers and six crew members, encountered turbulence so intense around 8:30 p.m. that the pilot was forced to make an unscheduled landing at Memmingen Airport in Bavaria. Eight passengers and one crew member were hurt, The Associated Press reported. Three people were taken to the hospital in Memmingen for treatment; the other injured people were released after receiving outpatient treatment. As a precaution, all passengers were checked for injuries by the emergency services. Authorities did not permit the plane to continue flying, and the airline arranged bus transport for passengers. Milan is about 380 kilometers (236 miles) south of Memmingen. Elsewhere in the region, storms damaged several homes in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, according to the German news agency dpa. In the Donaustetten district, strong winds tore roofs off multiple row houses, rendering them uninhabitable, though no injuries were reported. Fire officials suspect a small tornado or waterspout caused the damage. The German Weather Service (DWD) is investigating, according to dpa. Storm-related emergency calls also came from other areas in southern Germany, where damage was mostly limited to fallen trees and flooded basements. The DWD warned of further storms Thursday, with hail, strong winds, and localized heavy rain expected.

Nine injured in Ryanair emergency landing in Germany
A Milan-bound Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing in southern Germany because of heavy turbulence from a thunderstorm late on Wednesday, with police saying nine passengers were injured. According to a statement by police in Bavaria, weather conditions prompted the pilot to initiate an emergency landing in Memmingen, about 70 miles (113 km) west of Munich. While the plane landed safely, nine people between the ages of two and 59 were injured in the air turbulence, police said. A woman sustained a head injury, her two-year-old toddler suffered bruises and another 59-year-old woman complained of back pain, with all three receiving hospital treatment, the statement said. Other injuries were treated on site. Ryanair said in a statement on Thursday that the flight's captain had requested medical assistance ahead of landing. The airline added that a replacement flight had been arranged to take passengers to Milan and apologized to those affected. Police, however, had said in their Wednesday statement that the airline was organizing a bus transfer because local aviation authorities did not immediately clear onwards flights.
