James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson is my turn-to book whenever I'm depressed. Johnson is clearly a figure morally situated in the 18th century, but Boswell is someone who would be so at home on TikTok. He invents the whole notion of modern celebrity and modern biography. I find his insistence on thrusting himself centre-ground so funny. On almost every page there is something that makes me laugh.
Tiberius and His Age: Myth, Sex, Luxury and Power by Edward Champlin, who wrote a weirdly sympathetic biography of Nero. Tiberius, like Nero, has a very negative reputation. About eight years ago Champlin wrote a series of essays that reconstituted him. I thought they were brilliant, and knew he was writing a book. I waited and waited

People spot 'eerie' detail in 1941 photo and claim it's evidence 'time travel exists'

A historic black and white photograph taken outside a cinema has left people questioning whether time travel is real A photograph from 1941 has sparked debate amongst viewers who reckon it could be evidence that time travel exists.,The historical image, captured by Edward Rosskam on Chicago's South Side, shows a queue of well-dressed youngsters and teens positioned outside a picture house. ‌ However, one lad towards the side of the photograph has got people baffled. Social media users are now persuaded the youth is holding an Apple iPad. Posting to Reddit's timetravelerscaught forum, one individual titled the image: "iPad carrying moviegoer, all the way to the right." Yet not everyone's buying into the time-travel hypothesis – with some people claiming it might be something far more ordinary. ‌ ‌ "Looks like a book to me," one person commented. Expanding on historical cinema customs, another explained: "Back in the day of early film, ushers scanned the audience for pens and notepads as to prevent bootleg recreations of the film." A further user remarked: "If I can time travel, have an iPad and I'm black why in God's name would I go to the South Side of Chicago in 1941 to watch a matinee of 'The Aldrich Family?!'" Others seized the opportunity to reminisce fondly about bygone times, with one person noticing the clothing visible in the photograph, saying: "They all are dressed so nicely. To wear your Sunday best to see the movies, it must have been a fantastic treat." Another added: "Part of me wishes we would all dress up like that for the little things, and then I debate if I am even going to shower today." While a further person commented: "Amazing how nicely dressed they all are. The little men's hats are so adorable." ‌ The post comes after a woman recently went viral on TikTok after discovering a snap of her doppelgänger. Lindsay Bullis says she was researching her ancestry history online when she stumbled upon a photo of a woman with the "same face" as her". The 28-year-old said she had an "uncanny" resemblance to Mary Beckwith, who is her fourth grandmother on her father's side and lived from 1805 to 1873. Comparing pictures of herself to Mary, Lindsay amassed more than 4.6 million views on the clip and left users convinced she is a time traveller.

Reading festivalgoers spared erection blushes as Columbia offers to put up tents

Nothing puts more of a dampener on the festival vibe than being unable to get your tent up - so Columbia has launched a free tent-erection service for Reading Festival this weekend Festivalgoers over the years have always had problems when it comes to getting it up. ‌ And the last thing you need at the start of a weekend of fun, sun and music is finding you are struggling with your erection. Your tent erection, that is. ‌ Because nothing harms that festival arrival buzz more than finding you're a flop when it comes to getting your tent pole out. Now help is at hand for the 90,000 revellers at the Reading Festival this weekend (August 22-24). ‌ Instead of getting tied up in a nightmare of guy ropes, bent poles, and crumpled groundsheets, music fans can allow others to make getting set up less of a stiff challenge. Leading outdoor gear firm Columbia have launched Morning Erections, a free, first-of-its-kind tent erection service designed to take the stress out of getting your tent up. The service is fronted by TikTok stars Jack Joseph and Becky Bambino and uses Columbia's outdoor know-how to give people the ultimate festival experience from the minute they arrive on site. Jack said: 'Getting a tent pitched by the experts at Morning Erections is set to be the best five minutes of your life, or at least your festival… or even your morning. ‌ 'We strongly believe that pitching a tent first thing in the morning doesn't need to be hard.' The service promises to get your pitch perfect in minutes, with the company's crack team of tent wranglers ensuring your home for the festival weekend is 'swiftly and effectively erected'. ‌ All to a standard that can withstand a weekend partying and late nights after watching acts including headliners Chappell Roan, Bring Me The Horizon and Travis Scott. Reading Festival is considered a rite of passage for festivalgoers in the UK. Morgan Bruce, 21 from Bristol, is at the event for the first time and was nervous about putting her tent up. 'I was bricking it a bit to be honest,' she said. 'I've never put a tent up before so getting a hand from the guys was amazing.' If the service proves popular, Columbia say they may take their Morning Erections on tour to more UK festivals next summer. So, if you're heading to Reading this weekend and are worried about erection problems it may be worth giving the Columbia team a try. Just keep it to tents.

Chloe Ferry removes BBL after sobbing she wished she'd never touched her body

Geordie Shore star Chloe Ferry underwent corrective surgery to remove her BBL earlier this year. She took to her social media to share before-and-after footage of her body Chloe Ferry showed off her body with pride after reversing her Brazilian Bum Lift (BBL) as she questioned why she 'put her body through so much'. The Geordie Shore icon, 29, revealed earlier this year she was recovering from the corrective surgery and admitted she wished she had never touched her body. ‌ The former Celebrity Big Brother housemate - who's said to have spent more than £50,000 on surgeries, including on her boobs and nose, over the years - revealed that her "corrective surgery went to plan". And now, seven months later, the star took to her instagram page to share a before-and-after clip of the surgery. ‌ In both videos, Chloe wore a white form-fitting jumpsuit as she spun around for the camera to show off different angles of her body. In the clip from before she had corrective surgery, Chloe bragged about purchasing the outfit for £14 on TikTok as she happily moved closer to the camera to show off her bum. ‌ The video then cut to present-day Chloe, who put on the same jumpsuit but looked drastically different. "This is me after I had my BBL removed and my hips. I just look so much better," she said in the video. "When I watched that video back, it actually makes me really upset that I put my body through so much to try and feel perfect when I didn't even look normal. I wasn't even myself. "I feel so much more comfortable now in my skin. I'm not 100% there yet, I know I'm not, but I'm on the right path. I can feel my spark coming back." Fans rushed to the comment section to praise the reality star on her healing journey, with one user writing: "Loving the after! You look stunning!" and another adding: "Omg you seriously look amazing now Chloe." ‌ Another fan, who went through the same experience, commented: "I too removed My bbl and im so much happier now, you also look so much better now!!" "You look absolutely stunning. I'm more importantly, super happy!" one fan posted. A few days before, she put together a compilation clip of her pre and post BBL removal and shared an emotional caption. ‌ Chloe wrote:"7 months post op for my BBL removal and what a journey it has been! It's mad because on the videos when I had my BBL, you would've thought i was the most confident, outgoing person who loved myself and my body but the reality was I was very unhappy inside and out. "Looking back I don't even recognise who I was as a person its actually really sad, I have learnt a lot about myself being on this journey of self love but like I say, in life everything is a lesson even though I'm really disappointed for what I put myself through to look and feel perfect. You just need to be happy within. "And even though I'm not there yet, I know I'm on the way. looking at this video just shows how I've come to get back to my old self and I am starting to feel a lot more confident and sexy within myself just (heart emoji)."
