Chandrakant Pandit quits as KKR coach before IPL 2026; Knights issue statement: 'Decided to explore new opportunities'
Ever since the season ended, there has been speculation about Chandrakant Pandit's future, and finally, the inevitable has been confirmed. Pandit was roped in as the KKR coach in August 2022 ahead of the IPL 2023 edition.
KKR won the tournament in 2024 under Chandrakant Pandit's tenure. However, Gautam Gambhir, the franchise's mentor, received the bulk of the credit at that time.
'Chandrakant Pandit has decided to explore new opportunities and will not continue as Head Coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. We are thankful for his invaluable contributions - including leading KKR to the TATA IPL Championship in 2024 and helping build a strong, resilient squad. His leadership and discipline have left a lasting impact on the team,' KKR said in their official statement.

'We wish him all the very best for the future,' the statement added.
In 2022, Chandrakant Pandit took over the role of head coach from Brendon McCullum, who quit after three years. McCullum bid adieu to the franchise after being appointed the head coach of England's Test team.
Pandit's maiden tenure with an IPL team
This was Chandrakant Pandit's maiden IPL stint. He was also KKR's first
Indian head coach as he teamed up with bowling coach Bharat Arun and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.
Even in his maiden season as coach of KKR, the franchise had failed to make it to the playoffs. The only success came in 2024 when Gambhir was the mentor and Shreyas Iyer was the captain.
In 2025, KKR picked Venkatesh Iyer for a whopping INR 23.75 crore. However, the all-rounder failed to set the stage on fire, disappointing with both bat and ball.
Chandrakant Pandit was believed to be exceptional in getting Venkatesh Iyer on board as he knew him from a long time, having coached him earlier at Madhya Pradesh. Iyer was also appointed vice-captain, with Rahane as the skipper.
However, the campaign in the IPL 2025 went horribly wrong as KKR failed to string together consistent performances.

The report also added that Indian batter Sai Sudharsan was pulled up by a groundstaff member (probably Fortis) and was asked to move away from the area from where he was doing sprints. Notably, that area is being used for warm-ups for cricketers of both teams during any international or domestic match. Meanwhile, Gill called the entire issue caused by the head groundsman at the Oval with Gambhir as "unnecessary". "What happened yesterday, I thought, is just absolutely unnecessary. I mean, it's not the first time that we were having a look at the wicket," Gill said on Wednesday. The skipper, who has scored 722 runs in the four Tests so far, added: "As a captain, I don't know what the fuss was all about." During India's optional training session on Tuesday, Fortis was seen asking the Indian management to step aside at least 2.5 metres from the main pitch, which irked Gambhir, especially. Gambhir was caught on camera wagging his finger as Fortis towered over him, repeatedly stating: 'You can't tell us what to do. You're just the groundsman, nothing beyond.' However, Fortis was did just the opposite with the England players and support staff.

Can India make it all square at The Oval?
As Shubman Gill inspected the pitch on Wednesday afternoon at The Oval, chief curator Lee Fortis stood nearby and was engaged in a chat with Akash Deep and Abhimanyu Easwaran. A few moments later, as the Indian think-tank — comprising Gill, head coach Gautam Gambhir, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and chief selector Ajit Agarkar — stood near the square, Fortis walked up to them. Following his heated exchange with Gambhir, one would have expected further fireworks. As the cameras panned towards them, none of them spoke. While it seemed fine from a distance, the Indian camp wasn't quite happy with the way things panned out, and when the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy begins on Thursday, it would be all gung-ho about ending the series on a high. With England missing out on captain Ben Stokes, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, India certainly has the edge. While the medical team has advised against playing Jasprit Bumrah, captain Gill admitted that on a surface that could be 'lively', the team will take a call on fielding the ace pacer later, considering the conditions and weather forecast.
