Assam CM's plea: End remaining Bihu functions

The Hindu09-05-2025
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday (May 9, 2025) requested organisers to cancel the remaining Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu functions from May 10 onwards.
Rongali Bihu, a spring festival, marks the start of the Assamese New Year. The highly popular Bihu functions are organised from mid-April to mid-May.

The Chief Minister did not cite any reason for his call, but the appeal is believed to be related to the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict over the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
'Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation and contributions,' he posted on social media platform X.
'However, the time has now come to conclude this festive season. I humbly appeal that all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from 10th May onwards be kindly cancelled. Let us bring this vibrant celebration to a graceful close, with the same unity and spirit in which it was celebrated,' he further wrote.
In ethnic conflict-scarred Manipur, the top leaders of the Opposition Congress took out a 'Jai Hind Yatra' in the State's capital, Imphal, on Friday to express their solidarity with the Indian armed forces engaged in the conflict.
Hundreds of party workers participated in the rally led by State Congress president Keisham Meghachandra Singh, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, and Congress Working Committee member Gaikhangam.
Meanwhile, the security along the India-Bangladesh border in four northeastern States — Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura — has been heightened.
These States share a total of 1,880 km with Bangladesh. Some sensitive stretches of the border remain unfenced.
Night curfew along the border is one of the steps taken to thwart attempts by people to infiltrate, a possibility underscored after the detention of at least 30 Bangladeshi nationals in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi area over the past few months. Some of these people had come in illegally, while others were trying to go back.
'State security forces and local village defence parties have also been activated, particularly after some Bangladeshi nationals intimidated our border protectors in a sector in the West Jaintia Hills district,' a Meghalaya official said.

Congress claims vindication after PM Modi proposes next-gen GST reforms

The Congress on Monday said it stands vindicated on its criticism of the "flawed" Goods and Services Tax after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised a simplified GST structure. Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh claimed the economy has never recovered from the twin "Modi-inflicted shocks" of GST 1.0 and demonetisation. "It was the Vijay Kelkar Committee report of 2004 that led to the first announcement of GST in Mr. P. Chidambaram's Budget Speech of Feb 28, 2006. Here, Dr. Kelkar and his colleagues offer their suggestions for a transformed GST 2.0," Ramesh said in a post on X. "The Indian National Congress stands vindicated on its criticism of the flawed GST 1.0 that was pushed through on July 1, 2017, giving the economy its second serious shock after the notebandi of Nov 8, 2016. The economy has never recovered from these twin Modi-inflicted shocks," the Congress leader said in his post. The Congress has been alleging that the GST 1.0 is flawed and there has to be one single tax, with Rahul Gandhi dubbing it as "Gabbar Singh Tax". Prime Minister Modi on Sunday said the Centre has circulated the draft of the next-generation GST reforms among states and sought their cooperation to implement the proposal before Diwali. He said the reform in GST would benefit poor and middle-class people, as well as small and big businesses. Modi had announced the proposal to reform the GST law in his Independence Day speech on August 15 from the ramparts of the Red Fort. The present GST tax rates of nil/zero on essential food items, 5 per cent on daily use products, 12 per cent on standard goods, 18 per cent on electronics and services and 28 per cent on luxury and sin goods will be replaced by two tax slabs of 5 per cent and 18 per cent plus a special 40 per cent top bracket for 5-7 demerit goods. The proposed two-slab regime, if approved by the GST Council, will replace the current four slabs in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, doing away with the 12 per cent and 28 per cent slabs. The changes that have come about after nearly six months of deliberations and dozens of meetings have been conceived in a way to ensure that demand for tax tweaks does not arise, and also that input tax credit (ITC) does not get accumulated in the system. Scare for MPs, passengers as Kochi-Delhi Air India Express flight aborts take-off

KOCHI: A Delhi-bound Air India Express flight carrying 190 people, including three Kerala MPs, aborted take-off at Cochin International Airport late on Sunday night after unusual vibrations were detected from its engine, triggering anxious moments for passengers. Flight AI 504, with 185 passengers and five crew members, had begun its take-off roll at 10:40 pm when the pilot reportedly sensed a strong vibration and immediately discontinued the attempt. The aircraft was then taxied back to Bay 1R. Congress MPs Hibi Eden, Jebi Mather, and Anto Antony, travelling to Delhi to attend the Parliament session, were among those on board. Hibi, who was quick to share updates on social media, wrote: 'Something unusual with this flight AI 504... it just felt like the flight skidded on the runway... and hasn't taken off yet.' His wife, Anna Linda Eden, also on the flight, said the experience felt like 'a sudden jolt almost like a strong braking action.' Airport officials said passengers were disembarked and later accommodated on an alternative aircraft that departed at 2.45 am Monday with 162 passengers. Confirming the incident, Air India Express said the cockpit crew acted in line with Standard Operating Procedures after detecting an unusual sound during the take-off roll. 'The flight was brought back for checks, and an alternative aircraft was deployed. Our ground team in Kochi provided immediate assistance to the passengers,' the airline said in a statement. The airline added that the aircraft was taken to the Kochi hangar for examination. 'We regret the inconvenience caused due to this unforeseen situation. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew remain our top priority,' it said. Though no injuries were reported, several passengers described the aborted take-off as a frightening experience, especially given the sudden jolt and confusion inside the cabin.
