Mablethorpe, in Lincolnshire, was named the second-worst seaside town in the UK in the latest Which? rankings.
While the long-established tourist destination scored just 46%, locals have insisted this is an unfair rating.
Insisting that this is not a true reflection of life in the seaside town, Mablethorpe residents claimed that visitors are at least partly to blame for litter and dog poo on the beach.
Award-winning beach
Locals added that the area has changed for the better, citing the "award-winning" beach as one of the main draws.
'It's lovely, an enormous, clean beach and traditional atmosphere," one resident said.
Popular seaside cafes, along with the funky Aqua Park are also popular with locals and tourists alike.
Carl Tebbutt, town mayor of Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, spoke to the Express about what the area has to offer.
"It's a traditional seaside resort," said the 70-year-old, who has lived in the town since 1975.
"We've certainly got the best beaches on the east coast, if not the best beaches in the country."
And as well as the golden beach, Mablethorpe is described as an affordable getaway, with a number of highly-rated restaurants, bars, and pubs.

Despite this, the area scored just two stars for value for money, peace and quiet, and its seafront.
And it was only awarded one star for food and drink, tourist attractions, and shopping, for the second consecutive year.
Despite this, Sun readers said the town is home to their favourite "North East Seaside Eats", loving the beach bar in a boat to the pirate-themed fish and chip shop.
The harsh Which? ranking comes after a tourist on TripAdvisor claimed the beach in Mablethorpe is "strewn with dog muck".
However, the mayor quashed these claims, explaining that "the main beaches are dog-free".
The 10 worst seaside towns in the UK
Which? ranked the 10 worst seaside resorts across the UK. Bangor, Gwynedd Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset Bognor Regis, West Sussex Skegness, Lincolnshire Clacton-on-Sea, Essex Blackpool, Lancashire Great Yarmouth, Norfolk Fleetwood, Lancashire Southend-On-Sea, Essex
"I'm not sure where the claims of dog poo come from? Dogs are banned from all of the main beaches in the summer," he said.
Local reaction
Meanwhile, another resident described Mablethorpe as a "pleasure to live".
"I personally think that Mablethorpe is fantastic," he said.
"We have one of the best beaches - miles and miles of sand.
"The beaches on the whole are clean - if there is litter or dog mess it's left by holidaymakers who are just not respecting the beach for others."
Affordable tourist destination
He also praised the town's affordablity, saying there are "decent prices for stuff".
The town's mayor agreed that it is a very affordable place to visit, unlike other seaside resorts across the UK.
According to him, pints are on sale for just £3 in some pubs in the town.
"It's a very cheap place to visit as well," he explained.
"I've visited most seaside resorts in the country and our prices compare very favourably with what you would pay elsewhere.
"When you compare our prices to Margate or Scarborough, or any of the other major places, it's very cheap to visit.
"There's a lot of nice bars and you can still buy a pint up here for £3 which you can't elsewhere."
He added that the town also has "two great Italian restaurants, Chinese food, and your traditional fish and chip places".
"We've got something for everybody really," he said.
He also praised locals for taking pride in the area and making an effort to keep it clean.
"We have a really good volunteer organisation called Sutton Beach Care who pick up five or six bags of litter in a day," he revealed.
"And I don't mean carrier bags, I'm talking about bin bags. It's the people that come to Mablethorpe and don't really care about the town."
Another town resident agreed that Mablethorpe is home to the "best beach in the country".
"Mablethorpe may be a bit run down in places and like most places in need of investment," she said.
"But we have the best beach in the country. The town has many small businesses and has escaped the mass influx of fast food chains and multinational shops."
She addded that there has also been "a large investment in building the new sports hall and swimming pool, plus the nature reserve at Sandilands and the completion of the coastal path, along with other local projects."

A further five trains - out of a total of 18 heading from Paris to London - have been cancelled. Six others bound for London from France have been pushed back. A power outage in Moussy - 30 miles north of Paris - occurred at 8.30 this morning, triggering the slew of delays. As a result, services were forced to divert to slower lines which caused carnage on France's rail network. Since the problem is largely affecting French services, holidaymakers heading to Brussels or Amsterdam from London have largely been unaffected by the cancellations. The train operator took to X to confirm which services have been cancelled. A spokesperson for Eurostar said that the following services from London to Paris will not be running: #ES9022, 11.31 #ES9028, 13.31 #ES9044, 17.31 #ES9050, 19.01 Similarly, the following services from Paris to London will not be running: #ES9025, 11:37 #ES9039, 15:15 #ES9051, 18:10 #ES9055, 19:11 The spokesperson added: "We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused today." Passengers affected by the huge delays can exchange their tickets free of charge or request full refunds. Pictures taken at St Pancras show hundreds of Brits huddled around information screens, waiting for updates on when their train is going to depart. Some have taken to social media to vent their frustrations at the incident. One wrote: "How is it that the one day I choose to take the Eurostar they choose to cut power to the high speed rail in Northern France? "What are the odds?" However, according to lucky holidaymakers, regularly services are slowly being restored for some passengers. One person posted: "Thanks Eurostar for working through the track problems affecting all trains headed west from Paris Nord today. "Our train was late, but still running today. "Happy to be en route to London. We appreciate the work of your teams to make this happen." More to follow... Magical clifftop castle with stunning views and exquisite architecture an hour from Glasgow
The historic estate in Ayrshire was a favourite of former US president Dwight D Eisenhower, who used it as his Scottish holiday home. A Scottish clifftop retreat with history, mystery and panoramic sea views has been named one of the UK's top hidden gems by a travel expert. For families seeking a slice of fantasy on Scotland's west coast, few places feel more like a fairytale than Culzean Castle. Perched dramatically on a clifftop overlooking the Firth of Clyde, this historic estate in Ayrshire has long captured the imagination of visitors young and old, Glasgow Live reports. Just over an hour's drive from Glasgow, Culzean Castle was recently highlighted by travel expert Francesca Houldsworth as one of the UK's best hidden gems. Speaking to Verdant Leisure, she said the landmark was the first on her list of must-see destinations. 'On the west coast of Scotland, Culzean Castle is a must-see for architecture fanatics and historians alike,' Houldsworth said. 'Built in the 16th century, this property has a haunted past and is rumoured to be home to several paranormal residents. The castle is perched on the top of a cliff so not only boasts spectacular architecture, but stunning views and gardens.' The castle has earned praise from visitors and travel bodies alike. Last year, it was awarded five stars by Which? Magazine for its facilities and the accuracy of its promotional descriptions. Culzean Castle has a rich and fascinating history. Originally constructed in the late 18th century at the request of David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassilis, the estate later became a favourite of former US President and World War II general Dwight D. Eisenhower. He used the castle as a holiday home and was a regular visitor with family and friends. Now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, the site is a major draw for both history enthusiasts and families looking for a memorable day out. Inside the castle, visitors can admire architectural highlights such as the sweeping Oval Staircase, while outside, the extensive grounds feature the beautifully maintained Walled Garden. In recent years, over £500,000 has been invested in improvements, enhancing its appeal as a family destination. The castle's Adventure Cove play area caters to younger children, while older kids can explore the Wild Woodland playpark. The wider country park spans 120 hectares of mixed woodland, home to Swan Pond, a herd of deer, and even llamas. There's also plenty to enjoy for those seeking a more relaxed experience. The Home Farm Kitchen offers hearty meals, and the Swan Pond Ice Cream Parlour is a favourite on warmer days. For those wanting to explore further, the nearby beach is perfect for rockpooling and enjoying the sea air. Accommodation options in the area let visitors extend their castle experience. Nearby Cloncaird Castle in Maybole, where Wowcher is offering deals on holiday cottages, provides a luxury base for exploring the region. For a more immersive stay, the National Trust also offers cottages on the Culzean Estate, including North Segganwell, once home to an estate worker, and the picturesque North Firbank.
