This Date in Baseball - Lou Gehrig ends his streak of consecutive games played at 2,130

1939 — Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees did not play against the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium, ending at 2,130 his streak of consecutive games. Gehrig never played again. Babe Dahlgren took his place at first base. The Yankees didn't miss his bat, however, beating the Tigers 22-2.
1954 — Stan Musial hit five home runs in a doubleheader split with the New York Giants at St. Louis. The Cardinals won the first game 10-6 but lost the second 9-7. His fifth home run, off Hoyt Wilhelm, went over the roof in right center.

Taiwan had to win a qualifying pool to enter this year's event after exiting without a single win four years ago. In the other Pool B game, the Netherlands upset 2009 finalists South Korea with a 5 - 0 shutout. Ps Diegomar Markwell and Orlando Yntema combine for seven scoreless frames, while the Dutch hitters scratch a handful of runs with singles and some good fundamental baseball. OF Roger Bernadina drives in a pair of runs. Japan survives a scare in the Pool A opener at home, overcoming a 3 - 2 deficit against upstarts Brazil, who are playing in the World Baseball Classic for the first time, with a three-run outburst in the 8th to win, 5 - 3. Injured Japanese captain Shinnosuke Abe, pinch-hitting with the bases loaded and the score tied, drives a bullet up the middle on which 2B Felipe Burin makes a diving stop, but he is only able to get the runner at second base, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Leonardo Reginatto goes 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs to lead Brazil's attack.

Yankees Insider Sounds Alarm on Max Fried's Struggles Ahead of Red Sox Showdown
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The last eight games have been a dream for the New York Yankees, but there's one bad moment that sticks out from that stretch. It wasn't the one loss the Yankees had against the Minnesota Twins before rattling off five wins in a row. It was Saturday's putrid start for All-Star pitcher Max Fried, who allowed seven earned runs to the St. Louis Cardinals, including two home runs. Fried somehow got the win in that outing, but his ERA ballooned to over three for the first time since his first appearance. As recently as June 25, Fried's ERA was 1.92; it's now risen to 3.26. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 10: (NEW YORK DAILES OUT) Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees in action against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium on August 10, 2025 in New York City. The Astros defeated the Yankees 7-1. (Photo by)As the Yankees get set to begin a critical four-game series with the Boston Red Sox that will unofficially kick off the stretch run, insider Chris Kirschner of The Athletic gave the opinion that Fried's slump is the most pressing issue facing New York these days. "In my view, Fried's struggles are the biggest concern for the Yankees. He has a 6.80 ERA in his past eight starts, and there haven't been many positives in those outings," wrote Kirschner. "Throughout this stretch, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has frequently said that it's been more of a command problem than a stuff problem. He's right." In what could be a classic good news, bad news scenario, Kirschner also hinted that Fried's left index finger blister, which caused him to leave a start against the Chicago Cubs in July, could be contributing to his struggles. "The Yankees have been adamant that Fried's blister has nothing to do with his struggles. However, his second-most used pitch against righties, his curveball, has seen a drop in Stuff+," Kirschner wrote. "Before July 1, Fried's curveball had a 120 Stuff+, but it has decreased to 111 since. Notably, his curveball has graded slightly better in Location+ since July 1. The drop in stuff has coincided with an increase in opponent slugging percentage, going from a .321 before July 1 to a .409 slugging percentage after." Fried is scheduled take on the Red Sox for the second time this season on Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Boston has a different look now; gone is Rafael Devers, who homered off Fried in June, but star rookie Roman Anthony and third baseman Alex Bregman, who was injured for six weeks, present tough new challenges. Yankees' Aaron Boone Sends 3-Word Giancarlo Stanton Message Amid Surge
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have been through quite a roller coaster ride over the last few weeks, starting when superstar Aaron Judge went down with an elbow injury. Judge's injury only sparks up when he throws, so he's been cleared to return as the team's designated hitter, pushing Giancarlo Stanton back to the outfield. Stanton has fit back into the outfield perfectly for the Yankees, though he doesn't provide great defense. But at the plate, Stanton has been one of the best hitters in the league this year. His OPS is near 1.000 on the year and it's largely because of the offensive tear he's been on over the last few weeks. TAMPA, FLORIDA - AUGUST 20: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees celebrates his two-run home run in the 10th inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on August 20,... TAMPA, FLORIDA - AUGUST 20: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees celebrates his two-run home run in the 10th inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on August 20, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. More"He's an animal," Boone said when talking about Stanton after the slugger's pinch-hit home run on Wednesday, via Yankees beat writer Gary Phillips. The Yankees have needed every bit of Stanton's power this season, especially as Judge has slumped a bit over the last few weeks. Heading into Thursday, Stanton is slashing .432/.523/.1.027 with seven home runs in less than 40 at-bats this month. He's tallied 17 RBIs on 16 hits with eight runs scored. He's raised his season slash line to .311/.389/.642 with an OPS of 1.031 with this recent surge. It's unclear if or when Judge will be able to play the outfield again in the Bronx. If he's not able play the outfield again this season, Stanton will be forced to continue playing in the outfield as Judge holds down the designated hitter spot. Knicks linked to three-time All-Star in free agency
Knicks linked to three-time All-Star in free agency originally appeared on The Sporting News The New York Knicks haven't been shy about taking big risks, and they might be wise to take another gamble. Over the past couple of years, the Knicks have made some bold moves. Whether it be a midseason addition for OG Anunoby or a deal for Karl-Anthony Towns just before training camp, New York has the willingness to make big decisions. While the Knicks made a big move by bringing in Mike Brown as head coach this offseason, they have stayed away from many other significant moves. However, there might be a perfect free agent on the market for the Knicks to add to their class of Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele. Ben Simmons to the Big Apple? In a recent article from Bleacher Report, Eric Pincus listed the Knicks as one of the top potential landing spots for Ben Simmons. Of course, Simmons has been linked to the Knicks throughout the offseason and could be a perfect fit if he's used correctly. After a solid half-season with the LA Clippers, Simmons is still searching for a new home. While he had an unfortunate end to his time in Philadelphia and never found his footing in Brooklyn, a return to the Atlantic Division could be the right move. While there would be pressure to perform, considering the Knicks are a title contender, Simmons would be used off the bench in small stints, allowing him to play his game while surrounded by some of the top players in the league. With New York's sometimes shaky defense with Towns and Jalen Brunson sharing the floor, Simmons could be another big wing ready to take on some challenges on that end next season. While Simmons is always a bit of an unknown, the small risk could be worth it for the Knicks.
