Chloe Kelly's life off the pitch from nearly quitting football to historic back-to-back Euros win

Daily Mirror5 days ago
Chloe Kelly has had a whirlwind year to say the least, with the England forward almost giving up the sport before becoming the hero in the Women's Euros 2025 final
The Lionesses have achieved the extraordinary once more, carving their legacy into footballing history with consecutive triumphs at the Women's Euros 2025 Final. England defeated Spain in a heart-stopping clash that stretched to 120 minutes before prevailing 3-1 on penalties, with Chloe Kelly delivering the decisive spot-kick, reports the Express.

Establishing herself as an England legend in the showpiece event, Chloe confidently dispatched her penalty past Spain's Cata Coll to secure victory. BBC Sports commentator Vicki Sparks captured the moment perfectly: "This is it, this is the moment for Chloe Kelly. Can she be England's heroine? Chloe Kelly... yes she can!"

Kelly rose to the occasion magnificently, rescuing England from perilous situations on three separate occasions. Teaming up with emerging talent Michelle Agyemang, the duo rekindled the country's belief in achieving a magnificent triumph that delivered a "proper English performance" culminating in continental success.

Following the trophy presentation, Chloe was heard declaring: "The first time was so nice, we had to do it twice."
Yet beyond the football field, she remains remarkably private about her personal affairs. Having wed her long-time partner last year, early 2025 almost witnessed her departure from professional football entirely.

Which team does Chloe Kelly play for?
The start of 2025 proved challenging for England's champion, as she spoke publicly about her treatment at former club Manchester City, claiming they had 'assassinated her character', according to The Guardian. The player revealed in January that she couldn't envisage "a future" at Man City, before Arsenal secured her signature.
There had been chatter about Kelly's limited game time for the Manchester club, having only started once in the 2024/25 season. She had previously expressed a desire to leave football before her move to London.
Breaking her silence on the matter, she made a last-ditch appeal to be allowed to exit the club. In an Instagram post in January, Chloe wrote: "A message from me... For a long time I've tried to work through professional challenges privately, not commenting publicly, but with my situation increasingly being debated in the public domain I feel it's time to be open and transparent and you heard it from my perspective.

"A key lesson I have learned in my life is that whilst I can't control someone's negative behaviour towards me, I can control how long I am prepared to tolerate it.
"From Day One, I've felt so much love from my teammates and the fans. With my contract expiring in June I've accepted my future is not at this club beyond then.

"With the Euros fast approaching, this summer is a huge one and I want to be in a position to give it my best shot to represent my country. Something which has always filled me with such pride and it is a true honour to do so. However to be dictated whom I can and can't join with only 4 months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career but my mental well being. The situation has dragged on for too long, it's disappointing and not right.
"I'm at a pivotal point in my life and my career is so important to me and is very disappointing that the sport we love can make you feel this way especially after there's been so much growth in our sport. This is why I'm posting this because I want to make you all aware that we as players dedicate our lives to our sport and our clubs but our dreams can be crushed whilst we live in silence.
"I am human and I have and will give everything to the game that I love. Ultimately I just want to be happy again."

Just 24 hours later, Chloe revealed her homecoming to Arsenal, sharing a throwback snap of herself in the famous red jersey with the caption "Pursuit of happyness". The talented midfielder secured her move to North London on a free transfer, leaving Manchester City behind.
Her Arsenal debut came in February, marking the start of what would become a trophy-laden chapter. Chloe's switch proved golden as she lifted the Champions League crown against Barcelona in May, celebrating alongside England colleagues Leah Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Beth Mead and Alessia Russo.
Her permanent deal with the Gunners was confirmed at the start of July, following an emotional farewell to City supporters and former teammates. Arsenal Women posted footage of Kelly entering the dressing room with the simple question: "How could she not?"

The 2024/25 campaign concluded with both a Champions League triumph and her second Women's Euros victory adorning her trophy cabinet.
How much does Chloe Kelly get paid?
The BBC reported that players in the Women's Super League are earning an average salary of £47,000 a year. Since 2020, both England's women's and men's teams have been receiving the same match fee of £2,000 per game.

The prize pot for the Women's Euros has soared to €41million (£35,633,364), marking a significant 156 per cent increase from the €16million (£13,905,703) in 2022. UEFA previously announced that all participating nations and clubs will be rewarded with record pay outs.
Each of the 16 teams qualifying for the final tournament will get a fixed €1.8 million (£1,564,315) participation fee, which makes up 70 per cent of the total prize money. The remaining 30 per cent consists of performance bonuses, with €50,000 awarded for a draw and €100,000 for a win during the group stages, plus staggered bonuses for advancing through the knockout rounds.
The maximum prize money a team can earn, if they also secure victories in all three group stage games, is €5.1million (£4,432,227).

Who is Chloe Kelly's husband?
Chloe celebrated her first tournament as a married woman at the Euros 2025. Her husband, Scott Moore, was spotted in the stands cheering as she scored England's final penalty.
While Scott maintains his privacy on social media, Chloe shared his heartfelt message on her Instagram Story. Sporting Chloe's winners medal, Scott penned: "Speechless once again. Love you."

Chloe responded with her own heartfelt words: "I'm so grateful to have you by my side."
Euros spectators couldn't help but notice the footballer sporting custom shin pads adorned with a sketch of her and her partner on their nuptial day. Chloe Kelly's romance began while she was at Everton, having joined them on loan from Arsenal in 2016 before making the move permanent two years later.
While Chloe dazzled on the field, Scott took care of the turf as a groundsman, leading to their charming first encounter. It wasn't long before he slid into her Instagram DMs, sparking the start of something special.

The Mirror reports that their initial date was anything but high-end. Reflecting on the memory, Chloe remarked: "We got a little monkey and every time I see it, it reminds me of when we went to IKEA."
The couple's engagement unfolded in December 2023 amidst the awe-inspiring Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland, followed by a July 2024 wedding at Merrydale Manor in Cheshire, where Kelly donned an exquisite Galia Lahav Elysee bridal gown.
Their first anniversary was celebrated during this year's Euros, with Chloe posting a series of photos on Instagram captioned: "One year on from the Happiest of my life. Happy anniversary to my (white heart emoji)."

Dame Chloe Kelly? Keir Starmer hints England's Euro-winning Lionesses could be in line to receive official honours

Sir Keir Starmer has hinted that England's Lionesses could be in line to receive official honours after their Euros win. The Prime Minister said 'recognition is coming' for the two-time champions who he says have inspired a generation. He added that they personified England's greatest values - decency, fairness and respect following the team's success in Switzerland last week. The Lionesses have won the competition twice in a row and this year beat Spain in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out. And now players Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton could be on the the New Year's Eve Honours List. The Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman could also be in the running for recognition and may be made an Honorary Dame after leading the squad to glory once more. Sir Keir told the Sun on Sunday: 'What Sarina and our Lionesses have achieved is nothing short of remarkable. 'So recognition is coming - and it will be worthy of their historic success.' The Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman could also be in the running for recognition and may be made an Honorary Dame after leading the squad to glory once more The Prime Minister flew out to Basel to watch the Lionesses achieve victory at St Jacob-Park. During the tense final, Kelly scored the winning penalty for England with goalkeeper Hampton saving not one but two Spanish shots. The Cabinet Office oversees the honours but those on the list are a closely-guarded secret and will be officially announced later down the line. However there is a precedent with the team being honoured over their last Euros win three years ago. Captain Leah Williamson received an OBE, while Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White were made MBEs. Gareth Southgate was given a knighthood for his part in the men securing a spot in their second consecutive Euros final last year. The exciting news comes after England midfielder Ella Toone revealed the heartbreaking family tragedy she kept hidden during the Lionesses' dramatic Euro 2025 final victory. Posting on Instagram four days later, the Manchester United star shared that her grandmother, known affectionately as Nanna Maz, had died just hours before one of the biggest games of her career. Alongside nine photos of her nan, Toone wrote: 'Even in the highest of highs life can hit you with the lowest of lows. My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. I have comfort in knowing she got to watch from the best seat in the house with Dad, her favourite person. 'I'll miss you forever nan but I'll cherish the special memories we made, there isn't enough words I can possibly say to sum up the person you were, but I'm grateful you were my nanna. My football loving , crazy, funny Nan.'

Starmer hints Lionesses will be honoured after Euro 2025 triumph

Sir Keir Starmer has suggested England's Lionesses will receive honours after their dramatic Euro 2025 victory, declaring: 'Recognition is coming.' The Lionesses became back-to-back European champions after beating Spain in a penalty shoot-out in Basel last Sunday – the first senior England side to lift a major trophy overseas. The Prime Minister praised the players for inspiring a generation, including his own daughter, and for representing 'decency, fairness and respect'. Among those tipped for recognition are Chloe Kelly, who scored the decisive penalty in the final, and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who saved two Spanish spot-kicks. Head coach Sarina Wiegman, who led England to the win, could be made an honorary dame. The Cabinet Office oversees the honours process and recipients are not confirmed until they are officially announced, but sporting heroes have often been rewarded. After the Lionesses' 2022 win, captain Leah Williamson was made an OBE, while Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White received MBEs. Sir Keir said the Lionesses' success was about 'more than football', citing their resilience in coming from behind against Sweden, Italy and Spain, and their stand against racist abuse during the tournament. Writing in The Sun on Sunday, he said: 'When the Lionesses put that England shirt on, they stand for what we stand for together: England, in all its glory, with our shared history and values. 'The pride, resilience and unity that define this team define the very best of who we are.' He added: 'What Sarina and our Lionesses have achieved is nothing short of remarkable. So recognition is coming – and it will be worthy of their historic success.' The Government, he said, was committed to delivering a legacy of 'equal access to all sport for girls and boys' in schools – a key demand from the squad after their 2022 triumph. 'The Lionesses have made an entire nation proud,' he said. 'We're determined to deliver a legacy they can be proud of too.'

Man Utd outcast Alejandro Garnacho reacts to Chelsea transfer link

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has appeared to endorse a transfer to Chelsea this summer with his latest activity on Instagram. Garnacho wants to leave United this summer but is keen to remain in the Premier League and join a Champions League club, which makes Chelsea favourites for his signature. The Argentina international fell out with Ruben Amorim at the end of last season and has been omitted from the club's pre-season tour of the United States. United are open to selling Garnacho and would be willing to accept a £40m transfer fee for the 21-year-old after initially asking for £70m in the January window when both Chelsea and Napoli were interested. Garnacho, meanwhile, has made his feelings clear on his preferred move as he liked Fabrizio Romano's Instagram post on Saturday night which stated that he remains on Chelsea's shortlist alongside RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons.
