Six killed in Sri Lanka helicopter crash: military

The personnel were taking part in a demonstration flight and preparing for a rope jump when their Bell 212 plunged into a lake at Maduru Oya, east of capital Colombo, a military official told AFP. They had been due to perform a 'fast-roping' manoeuvre during a graduation ceremony of Special Forces commandos, showcasing their skills at descending from the helicopter while it hovered above roof height. 'There were 12 people on board, and six of them survived with minor injuries,' the official said, saying those killed included four commandos and two Air Force gunners. The ceremony was called off, the official said, adding that an investigation into the cause of the incident was underway. Friday's tragedy is the worst for the air force since a Chinese-built Y-12 aircraft crashed at Haputale, 200 kilometres (125 miles) east of Colombo, in January 2020, killing all four crew members on board. Dozens injured after magnitude-6 quake strikes Sulawesi, Indonesia
The authorities said there was no potential for a tsunami. – AFP file photo JAKARTA (Aug 17): At least 29 people were injured, including two in a critical condition, after a magnitude-6 earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi in central Indonesia on Sunday morning, German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing an official. Thirteen of the injured have been rushed to medical facilities in Central Sulawesi province's Poso and Tokorondo districts due to injuries sustained by the falling debris from a damaged house of worship, said Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The quake also damaged a church in Masani village, while the number of displaced residents is still being verified. The quake struck Poso at 5.38 am on Sunday (2138 GMT Saturday) with the epicentre at a depth of 10 kilometres. The authorities said there was no potential for a tsunami. The tremor, which lasted about 15 seconds, was strongly felt in several villages in Poso Pesisir district, prompting residents to flee their homes. In neighbouring Sigi district, the quake was felt moderately for about seven seconds, but no casualties or damage were reported. China UnionPay's Poetry POS Machine Campaign Starts Global Heart-Warming Journey in Thailand
BANGKOK, THAILAND - Media OutReach Newswire - 15 August 2025 - Recently, alongside a Chinese lantern festival held in Thailand, UnionPay's Poetry POS Machine public welfare initiative brought the poems of Chinese children in mountainous areas overseas for the very first time. Thai children recited verses by their Chinese peers, savoring the childlike wonder and joy from China. Visitors to the booth could either make donations by swiping their UnionPay cards on the POS machine to receive a bilingual Chinese-Thai poetry receipt, or record a poetry-reading audio for free and get a postcard with an audio QR code – a unique memento to call their own. Notably, all donations from the event will be channeled through a local Thai charity foundation to improve the lives and education of local children. As a leading international card network, UnionPay is widely accepted in Thailand, with its global acceptance network spanning 183 countries and regions. So far, the campaign has collected over 6,000 poems and published an anthology. Additionally, the first UnionPay public welfare library and 114 public welfare book corners have been put into use in Jinzhai County, central China's Anhui Province.
