Malaysia's natural rubber production falls 37.3% in April 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's natural rubber (NR) production decreased by 37.3 per cent to 18,008 tonnes in April 2025 as compared to 28,739 tonnes in the previous month, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that the NR production fell by 15.6 per cent year-on-year, as against 21,325 tonnes in April 2024. "Production of NR in April 2025 for Malaysia was mainly contributed by the smallholders sector (86.0 per cent) as compared to the estates sector (14.0 per cent),' he said in a statement. On total stocks, Mohd Uzir said they have decreased by 6.7 per cent to 203,728 tonnes in April 2025 as compared to 218,253 tonnes in March 2025, with the rubber processors factory contributing 87.6 per cent of the stocks followed by rubber consumer factory (12.3 per cent) and rubber estates (0.1 per cent). He said exports of Malaysia's NR amounted to 35,901 tonnes in April 2025, a decrease of 31.7 per cent as against March 2025 (52,531 tonnes). "China remained as the main destination for NR exports, which accounted for 33.3 per cent of total exports in April 2025, followed by the United Arab Emirates (14.9 per cent), Germany (14.2 per cent), India (6.5 per cent) and the United States (US) (5.1 per cent),' it said. He added that the export performance was contributed by NR-based products such as gloves, tyres, tubes and rubber threads. Gloves were the main exports of rubber-based products with a value of RM1.1 billion in April 2025, down 19.2 per cent as compared to March 2025 (RM1.3 billion). Meanwhile, DOSM reported that the average monthly price of concentrated latex recorded a decrease of 7.0 per cent (April 2025: 647.20 sen per kilogramme (kg); March 2025: 696.05 sen per kg), while scrap dropped by 15.8 per cent (April 2025: 641.27 sen per kg; March 2025: 761.92 sen per kg). The trend of prices for all Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) posted a decline between 6.9 per cent and 13.5 per cent. According to the Malaysia Rubber Board Digest published in April 2025, the Kuala Lumpur Rubber Market experienced mixed trends of decline and recovery throughout April, influenced by fluctuating signals from regional rubber futures markets in response to uncertainties surrounding the US trade policies. "Market sentiment remained subdued amid ongoing global economic uncertainties and escalating China-US trade tensions, (with) a stronger ringgit against the US dollar and declining crude oil prices further weighing on sentiment,' it added. - Bernama

Bursa Malaysia inches up as caution reins in bulls

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session slightly higher, lifted by gains in oil and gas stocks, although overall market sentiment remained cautious amid external uncertainties. At the lunch break, the FBM KLCI rose 2.62 points or 0.17% to 1,526.46, rebounding from an intra-morning low of 1,523.22. Losers outpaced gainers 446 to 278, while 477 counters were unchanged. Turnover stood at 1.6 billion shares worth RM883.6 million. Oil and gas and related stocks were among the top gainers on Bursa Malaysia, buoyed by stronger oil prices amid escalating US-Iran tensions. Hengyuan Refining Co added 11 sen to RM1.71 while Petron Malaysia Refining & Marketing gained 10 sen to RM3.68. Dayang climbed five sen to RM1.90, Hibiscus rose five sen to RM1.55, Dialog added three sen to RM1.53 and Bumi Armada gained 0.5 sen to 48 sen. Other gainers on Bursa Malaysia included PETRONAS Gas, up 16 sen to RM17.86, Chin Tek, up 13 sen to RM8.85, Hong Leong Financial Group, up 12 sen to RM16.70, and Maybank, up nine sen to RM9.79. Among the losers, Hong Leong Industries slid 34 sen to RM13.28, F&N fell 22 sen to RM28.22, Heineken lost 14 sen to RM27.18, and Malaysian Pacific Industries declined 12 sen to RM21.20. Malacca Securities expects the FBM KLCI to trade on a softer tone, mirroring the negative performance on Wall Street. However, the research house remains positive on the construction sector, particularly on SunCon, following its recent RM1.16bil project win, which has boosted its outstanding order book to approximately RM7.9bil — representing a cover ratio of over two times its forecasted FY24 revenue. 'Traders may also focus on the O&G sector amid rising crude oil prices due to escalating geopolitical tension between US-Iran. 'Aside from healthy dividend payouts, we favour Sunway REIT for its active asset acquisition activities and defensive characteristics in weathering economic uncertainties,' Malacca Securities said. Meanwhile, TA Securities expects blue-chip stocks to extend their gains, supported by optimism over easing US-China trade tensions. However, it noted that further upside may be limited by lingering concerns over President Trump's unpredictable trade policies and the absence of clear progress on a US-Malaysia trade agreement. 'Immediate index support stays at 1,490, while stronger supports can be found at 1,465 and 1,444.

Earthquake worsens Myanmar's economic decline, World Bank says

FILE PHOTO: A woman carries a bag of produce on her head at the Da Nyin Gone vegetable wholesale market in Yangon on September 19, 2023. The earthquake could increase the national poverty rate by 2.8 percentage points, pushing more households into poverty, the World Bank predicts. - AFP YANGON: Myanmar's beleaguered economy is expected to contract by 2.5 per cent in the 2025/26 fiscal year largely due to the devastating impact of a powerful earthquake in late March, the World Bank said in a report on Thursday (June 12). The World Bank said direct damages to property and infrastructure from the 7.7 magnitude quake were estimated at US$11 billion, or 14 per cent of the nation's gross domestic product, estimating that economic output would be about US2 billion lower than it otherwise would have been because of the quake. The quake affected more than 17 million people, with nine million severely impacted, the World Bank said. The death toll has topped 3,700, according to Myanmar's ruling junta. "The earthquake caused significant loss of life and displacement, while exacerbating already difficult economic conditions, further testing the resilience of Myanmar's people," Melinda Good, Division Director for Thailand and Myanmar, said in a statement. "Recovery efforts are essential to help the most vulnerable populations." A junta spokesman did not respond to a call from Reuters seeking comment on the report. In December, the World Bank had projected Myanmar's economy would shrink one per cent in the 2024/25 fiscal year that ended in March due to the severe flooding in the country. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021, sparking a civil war. There have been international efforts to stall the conflict, but rebels have accused the junta of breaching a ceasefire called to allow relief efforts to reach earthquake-affected areas. The hardest-hit regions of Mandalay and Naypyidaw were expected to lose up to one-third of their production between April and September before a partial recovery in the second half of the fiscal year, the World Bank said. The earthquake could increase the national poverty rate by 2.8 percentage points, pushing more households into poverty, the report stated. A survey before the quake estimated the poverty rate at 31 per cent in 2024. "Myanmar's compounding crises have put household coping mechanisms under severe stress," said Kim Edwards, Senior Economist and Programme Leader for Thailand and Myanmar. - Reuters
