Published 29 May 2025, 04:13 PM IST West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee addresses the media at State Secretariat in Howrah
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday "What Modi ji said today, we are not only shocked but also very sad to hear this, when the Opposition is representing the country...In his presence his minister said that they will do Operation Bengal, like Operation Sindoor. I challenge them - if they have guts, go into elections tomorrow, we are ready and Bengal is ready to accept your challenge. But please remember, time is a factor. You must remember the time. Our representative Abhishek Banerjee is also in the team. And he is speaking every day against terrorism, against terror. At that time, Mr Modi, not as the PM but as the BJP president, you are criticising the Government (in Bengal) which is giving you full support, defending the country like anything. You are accusing the Government and you want to blame the Opposition at this time, at this hour to politicise things just like the leader of BJP Jumla Party...You are doing garbage of lies. They loot the country and scoot. It doesn't look nice to talk in this manner. Regarding Operation Sindoor, though I don't have any comments but please remember every woman has respect..."
Assembly elections are scheduled to be ehld in West Bengal in 2026.

JeM Terrorist Abdul Aziz Esar, Who Threatened India, Dies Mysteriously In Pakistan: Report

It seems that Pakistan is getting aftershocks of Operation Sindoor every other day. Every other day a new report or satellite image is made public which adds salt to Pakistan's injury and humiliation. Now, in a fresh setback, a top Jaish-e-Mohammed commander, who has round-the-clock security, has been found dead under mysterious circumstances in Pakistan. Terrorist Abdul Aziz Esar, who recently delivered a fresh anti-India speech threatening Delhi, has now been found dead under mysterious circumstances in Pakistan, according to multiple media reports. Notably, this is the second such incident in a fortnight. Earlier on May 17, Lashkar-e-Taiba's top terrorist Saifullah Khalid was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Pakistan's Sindh. Notably, JeM is rattled with India's Operation Sindoor in which the Indian Armed Forces targeted nine terror camps on May 7. "India successfully destroyed nine major terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), targeting Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen facilities. Over 100 terrorists were killed in action," said the Government of India. During the Operation Sindoor, India redefined the rules of engagement, striking deep into Pakistan's heartland, including Punjab province and Bahawalpur, once considered out of bounds even for US drones. India made it clear: neither the LoC nor Pakistani territory will remain untouched if terror originates from there. Bahawalpur is the main base camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed. The Indian Armed Forces launched coordinated and accurate missile strikes on 9 terrorist bases - 4 located in Pakistan (including Bahawalpur and Muridke) and 5 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (such as Muzaffarabad and Kotli). These locations were key command centers of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), responsible for major attacks like Pulwama (2019) and Mumbai (2008).

Thunder-Blunder: BJP Hits Back At Rahul Gandhi Over Narendra-Surrender Remark

Congress Leader and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday made a sharp remark against the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'surrendered after the United States President Donald Trump's call'. The BJP has come out in sharp criticism against the remark of the Congress leader. Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, Gandhi added that if slight pressure is exerted on RSS-BJP, "they run away out of fear". "Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. If slight pressure is put on them, they run away out of fear. When Trump called Modi ji-'Modi ji kya kar rahe ho, Narendra-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narendra ji followed Trump," the Congress Leader said. He also brought up the 1971 war under the then-PM Indira Gandhi and said, "In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet (came from the US), India Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have this habit of writing letters of surrender." — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) June 3, 2025 BJP's Backlash BJP Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia in a post on X shared the picture of PM Modi and wrote, "Narendra Modi ji = Thunder; Rahul Gandhi = Blunder" Narendra Modi ji = Thunder Rahul Gandhi = Blunder — Gaurav Bhatia गौरव भाटिया (@gauravbhatiabjp) June 3, 2025 On the other hand, speaking to ANI, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, "Rahul Gandhi's words reflect his values as he makes such indecent remarks against the country's Prime Minister. But this is what can be expected from Rahul Gandhi, whose heart beats for Pakistan. Because when he offers a floral tribute to the statue of his grandmother, Indira Gandhi, he does not remove his shoes." "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has given a befitting reply to Pakistan's terror masters. From Salman Khurshid to Shashi Tharoor, every Congress leader is talking about this, and Pakistan itself is giving evidence of this... The people of the country see this uncivilised Rahul Gandhi as an agent of Pakistan..." he added. Trump's Claim For Mediations The tensions between India and Pakistan were escalating for days after the Islamic State had launched a swarm of drone and missile attacks on the Indian territory, following the launch of Operation Sindoor. The Indian Armed Forces had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the terror attack in Pahalgam in which 26 individuals were killed. After Islamabad's aggression that followed the beginning of Operation Sindoor, New Delhi launched strikes on Pakistan's airbases. On May 10, it was announced that a ceasefire had been reached after Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart. After this, the US President, on more than one occasion, has claimed credit for helping to stop the hostilities between the two neighbouring countries.

Operation Sindoor: Bhagwant Mann sparks row with ‘one nation, one husband' jab at BJP; Bittu says: ‘cheap political commentary'

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Tuesday stirred up a row as he attacked the BJP over Operation Sindoor, accusing it of seeking votes in the name of 'sindoor' (vermillion) and asked if it had started a 'one nation, one husband' scheme. The BJP hit back accusing Mann of insulting the widows of those killed in the Pahalgam terror attack with his 'cheap political commentary'. Mann hit out at the BJP for allegedly seeking votes in the name of Operation Sindoor for the Ludhiana West assembly bypoll. 'BJP is seeking votes in the name of 'sindoor'. They have made a mockery of 'sindoor'. They are sending 'sindoor' to every home. Will you use it? Will you pass it on and say apply this 'sindoor' in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's name? Is it a 'one nation, one husband' scheme?' Mann asked. He was responding to a question from reporters while addressing media after chairing a Cabinet meeting. #WATCH | Chandigarh | On Operation Sindoor, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann says, '…Did you not see the kind of fun made of Sindoor?…What is this – one nation, one husband scheme? ' — ANI (@ANI) June 3, 2025 The bypoll to Ludhiana West Assembly seat is slated for June 19 and the BJP was the last mainstream political party to announce its candidate for the seat that has turned into a battle of prestige for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party. The BJP, meanwhile, slammed Mann for his remarks, with Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu saying the chief minister has 'insulted' the widows of those killed in the Pahalgam attack with his 'cheap political commentary' on a matter of sensitive national security. 'I never expected that Bhagwant Mann would stoop so low by mocking the widows of Pahalgam using the disgraceful phrase 'one nation, one husband',' Bittu said. Accusing the AAP of politicizing the army's brave actions and undermining the sacrifices of soldiers and their families, he said, 'The Indian Army carried out a commendable operation. But the decision to give them the green signal was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a leader in whom the nation has complete faith'. Bittu demanded an unconditional apology from Mann for his 'crass' remarks. 'You may be a former comedian, but that does not give you the right to mock the widows of martyrs or the valour of our armed forces,' Bittu said. State Congress working president and the party candidate for Ludhiana West assembly bypoll Bharat Bhushan Ashu condemned the 'communally insensitive and insulting remarks' by Mann and said 'sindoor' is not only women, but all Hindus across the country during puja and other religious occasions and is applied on Lord Hanuman's idols. 'It has become a trend to make fun of and mock the Hindu customs and rituals and Mann has proved to be no exception', Ashu said, adding CM should learn about Hindu customs and culture before making such 'outrageous and blasphemous' remarks that has 'hurt the sentiments of Hindus across the country'. Saying that such remarks are unacceptable, Ashu demanded that Ṁann must tender an unconditional apology. Earlier in the day, when Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring was asked by reporters that the BJP is allegedly seeking votes in the name of Operation Sindoor, he said it should not happen that 'the BJP starts distributing 'sindoor' door to door', otherwise they will face the ire of Punjabi women. Warring, who is also the Ludhiana MP, said, 'It is the right of the husband of the woman and not that of BJP people that they go distributing sindoor. When women apply sindoor, they do it wishing the best for their husbands and for remaining 'suhagan' always. Bittu ji please be careful, because you do things like this only, and you may venture out with sindoor'. Responding to warring, Bittu said it was a shame that the widows of Pahalgam attack were being mocked by the Congress leader. 'Our mothers and sisters lost their husbands in Pahalgam when they were shot dead right before them and their sindoor was snatched away by Pakistanis forever. These people are doing politics in the name of sindoor,' Bittu said. BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Balliawal, in a post on X, said, 'There is no BJP activity sending sindoor to every household. The term Operation Sindoor was used because terrorists were killing Hindu men after checking their religion –? sindoor was a marker they used to identify women'. .@BhagwantMann crosses all limits ! Mocking Operation Sindoor, he shamelessly asks: 'Will you wear sindoor in Modi's name? Is this One Nation, One Husband?' Let's set the record straight: 👉 There is NO BJP activity sending sindoor to every household. 1/4 — Pritpal Singh Baliawal (@PritpalBaliawal) June 3, 2025 'This operation was about terrorism, martyrdom, and the protection of Indian lives. But how would Bhagwant Mann, a man with zero sensitivity, understand that? A man who mocks the Indian Army, insults Veer Naris, turns every sacred symbol into a joke…such a person will never understand the value of sindoor, which carries sacrifice, love. This isn't humour,' said Balliawal, adding that the CM has insulted insulted 'every soldier's widow, every grieving wife, and the spirit of Bharat' and must resign immediately and apologise to the nation. Under Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces had carried out strikes on May 7 on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Muridke, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
