Explained: What is the new ₹3,000 FASTag-based annual pass for highways?

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday announced the launch of FASTag-based annual pass. The pass, set to roll out from August 15, targets private vehicle owners and is expected to reduce congestion and disputes at toll plazas across the country.
What is a FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system used to collect tolls on highways without making vehicles stop. It is run by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
A FASTag is a small sticker with a special chip (called RFID) that is placed on the front windshield of a vehicle. This sticker is linked to a prepaid or bank account. When the vehicle drives through a toll plaza, sensors scan the FASTag, and the toll amount is taken from the linked account automatically.
What is a FASTag annual pass and who can use it?
The FASTag annual pass is a prepaid toll payment option priced at ₹3,000. It is meant exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles, including cars, jeeps, and vans. The pass is valid for one year from the date of activation or until 200 highway trips are completed — whichever comes first.
How does the annual pass benefit vehicle owners?
Designed for seamless travel on National Highways, the pass allows users to bypass routine toll payments, reducing time spent at plazas. It simplifies the toll process by consolidating payments into a single transaction, potentially saving both time and money for frequent travellers.
Where can the FASTag-based annual pass be activated?
A dedicated link for activation and renewal of the pass will be made available on the Rajmarg Yatra app, as well as the official websites of NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
How does the policy address the 60 km toll plaza issue?
The annual pass also responds to concerns raised by motorists about toll plazas located within 60 km of each other. With the FASTag-based annual pass, commuters will not need to worry about multiple charges within short distances, effectively streamlining travel through problematic toll zones.
What impact will this pass have on highway travel?
The government expects that the FASTag-based annual pass will help in reducing toll booth wait times, easing traffic congestion, and lowering the frequency of toll-related disputes. By automating and simplifying toll payments, the initiative aims to make travel on Indian highways more efficient for millions of private vehicle owners.
What are the advantages of using FASTag?
FASTag reduces congestion at toll plazas, saves fuel, and promotes digital, cashless payments. It is vehicle-specific and cannot be transferred. Available through authorised banks and online, FASTag requires a maintained balance for smooth usage. If the balance is insufficient, the tag may be blacklisted.
When was FASTag introduced in India?
FASTag was launched in 2014 as a pilot on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai corridor. It became mandatory for all four-wheelers from February 15, 2021.

Vodafone Idea connects with AST to foray into satcom services

New Delhi: Vodafone Idea (Vi) has become India's third telecom operator after Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to join the fray for starting broadband-from-space services, tying up with US-based AST SpaceMobile for offering direct-to-device satellite broadband connectivity in the country. Vi said, in a joint statement on Wednesday, that the space-based cellular broadband ecosystem will be designed to expand its telecom services of terrestrial connectivity, providing voice, video, data streaming and internet access. "It will encompass the design, implementation and launch of this system wherein AST SpaceMobile will develop, manufacture and manage the satellite constellation and Vi will oversee terrestrial network integration, operating spectrum and market access," it said. The telco will be pitched against not just its two bigger domestic rivals but also Elon Musk-owned Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper in India's nascent satcom market with high growth potential. Nasdaq-listed AST SpaceMobile is building a constellation of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that connect directly with standard mobile phones, without the need for specialised equipment. UK-based Vodafone Group, a co-parent of Vi, is an investor in AST SpaceMobile, and is collaborating to set up this 'first space-based mobile network'. The first five commercial satellites have been placed in orbit successfully last September, with plans to have over 50 satellites in the coming years. "As satellite-based mobile access becomes a reality in India, we are looking forward to ushering in a new era of seamless and resilient connectivity," said Avneesh Khosla, chief marketing officer, Vi. Through the partnership, Vi and AST SpaceMobile will collaborate to develop commercial offerings for diverse sectors, including consumer, enterprise and IoT. "We are not just expanding coverage; we are breaking down barriers to connectivity, enabling everyday smartphones to access 4G and 5G directly from space," Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer, AST SpaceMobile, added. Ivory said through the partnership, new possibilities can be unlocked for emergency response, disaster management, agriculture, remote learning, and other applications. As per rules, any company offering satellite services in India needs to establish its gateways locally and route all its data through these gateways. Vi will now need to secure a satcom permit for starting satcom services. The companies have not yet shared when they plan to apply for securing the regulatory approvals. Unlike other satcom companies like Starlink and Amazon Kuiper, which need a terminal to access broadband, AST SpaceMobile partners with mobile operators to offer connectivity on the devices of users directly, without any need for additional equipment, say experts.

Swiss tech to ensure smooth ride on Gorakhpur link e-way

1 2 3 Lucknow/Gorakhpur: People taking the Gorakhpur link expressway will enjoy a world-class experience as cutting-edge Swiss technology has been used to improve the quality of ride. To enhance mobility and accessibility in the region, the state govt has tied up with ETH Zurich, a Switzerland-based entity, to provide the technology to upgrade quality of ride and experience for vehicle owners using the stretch. The same technology is also being used in Ganga Expressway and in the maintenance of other operational expressways across the state. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate the 91.3-km long high-speed corridor on June 20. Through calibration, vibrations, and AI-based inputs, the independent experts from Switzerland ensured that motorists experience no bumps, roughness, or abnormal noise levels while commuting on the Gorakhpur link expressway. Using advanced vibration technology, accelerometer-based sensors, and S-motion sensors, the expressway's four-lane ride quality was scientifically evaluated. The equipment was installed in a specially outfitted Innova vehicle, which collected data during test runs. The assessment was carried out in collaboration with ETH Zurich and its spin-off firm, RTDT Laboratory AG. Based on detailed analysis, UP Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) implemented targeted improvements to ensure optimal ride experience. A senior officer at the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) said that the CM's office had been constantly monitoring the progress of the project. Though work on the project commenced in Feb 2020, the project got delayed due to some roadblocks. "Among major hurdles stalling the completion of the project was the change of the course of the Ghaghra. A portion of an embankment built for the safety of a major bridge constructed between Ambedkar Nagar and Gorakhpur was washed away last year after the monsoon, and repair works took time," an official said.

PIL Challenges Auction of NMC's Bhandewadi Land Leased Out To A Co

Nagpur: A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed before the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court challenging the legality of an ongoing auction process involving 10 acres of land in Bhandewadi, which the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) leased to a private company in 1999. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The high court bench recently issued notices to NMC, NB Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), RBI and the insolvency resolution officer, requesting responses. It clarified that the auction process will depend on the final outcome of the PIL. The PIL, submitted by lawyer Pravin Dahat, asserts that the land — originally leased to NB Infrastructure for setting up a waste-to-energy project — cannot legally be auctioned as it is owned by the civic body. The company defaulted on its obligations and went bankrupt, and is now undergoing insolvency proceedings where the land has been listed for auction by the resolution professional under a debt recovery ruling. The petition states that the land was leased on July 14, 1999, as part of a tripartite agreement between NMC, NB Infrastructure and HUDCO. IREDA also financed the project. "Despite no physical verification or due diligence, the funding was disbursed and the project later failed," the petitioner stated. Dahat argues that the auction breaches lease norms and claims that the no-objection certificate (NOC) issued by NMC for the project was 'fundamentally flawed'. The petition also questions why NMC has taken no stance in the matter despite being the landowner. The PIL further contests the jurisdiction of Delhi-based Debt Recovery Tribunal, which ruled in favour of HUDCO and IREDA, permitting the auction.
