BrahMos, Akash missiles now ‘Pakistan tested': Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said that India's flagship missile systems such as the BrahMos and Akash are now 'Pakistan-tested', while lauding the role of Ghaziabad-based Central Electronics Limited (CEL) in serving the Indian defence sector. The UP CM, on a visit to the National Capital Region, said many of CEL's products are used in supersonic missile systems like BrahMos which have been recently 'tested' in 'Operation Sindoor'.
India launched the operation against Pakistan-based terror outfits in response to the April 22 killings of 27 tourists by terrorists in Jammu and Kashimir's Pahalgam.
Adityanath was in Ghaziabad district for the foundation-stone laying ceremony of a new green-field data centre at CEL in Sahibabad. The project is a collaboration between CEL, a government of of India PSU affiliated with CSIR under the Union ministry of science and technology and ESDS at Sahibabad.
Adityanath underlined how CEL has played a role in serving country's key missiles like Akash, and Brahmos that have gained trust in the world.
'The defence sector is expanding, and Uttar Pradesh has six nodes. The Lucknow node has now started producing BrahMos missiles. Many of its components are being procured from institutions like CEL. During Operation Sindoor, we successfully tested Akash and BrahMos missiles against Pakistan. Both these missiles are now 'Pakistan-tested' and trusted worldwide. This shows our strength,' he said.
Adityanath said that UP will generate 20,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2027, with CEL playing a key role in this mission.
Describing the state-of-the-art data centre as a 'milestone in India's journey toward becoming a self-reliant global digital power,' union science and technology minister Jitendra Singh emphasised its strategic importance.
Singh also underlined CEL's contributions to strategic sectors, noting that it has developed numerous critical components for defence applications. He specifically referred to the radars used in the Akash Missile System, which proved instrumental during Operation Sindoor, showcasing India's technological strength. 'Not limited to defence alone, it is a trusted name in innovation-led manufacturing across defence, railways, and solar sectors,' he added.
Singh said that CEL has its own legacy and the company invented first solar cell back in 1970, and now, 50 years later, it is about to set up a green data centre.
On the occasion, the Union minister, announced that the country's first quantum computing data centre will soon be established in Noida. In addition, a biotechnology park will be set up near Lucknow, and a two or three-day startup conclave is planned for August.
Officials at CEL, meanwhile, said that the green data centre will boost digital infrastructure momentum by creating skilled jobs, promoting local innovation, and attracting startups, enterprises, and government users.

ICAO seeks to appoint external observer in Air India crash
The International Civil Aviation Regulation (ICAO) has written to India to become a part of the investigation of the Air India Boeing 787 killing 275 people. This is unprecedented as till now ICAO has appointed observers in instances where the crash site was in a conflict zone or a civilian aircraft was shot down by military forces. The civil aviation ministry said the memory module of the front black box was accessed and downloaded on Wednesday in a lab at Delhi in presence of NTSB investigators. India is yet to appoint a lead investigator to probe the accident.

Vijayawada: Union minister of culture and tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision and Naidu's strategic planning are propelling Andhra Pradesh toward progress in all sectors. He accused Sanjay Gandhi of acting as a tyrant, carrying out atrocities. Shekhawat praised the united struggle of millions, led by leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which restored democracy. He expressed regret that the Congress has neither condemned nor apologised for the Emergency. The nation, he said, continues to honour the sacrifices of those who opposed the dictatorship. Amazon loses an AWS generative AI boss as tech talent shuffle heats up
Amazon's AWS recently lost a key vice president helping oversee generative artificial intelligence development as well as the company's Bedrock service, as the competition for talent heats up. Vasi Philomin told Reuters in an email that he left Amazon for another company, without providing specifics. A company spokesperson confirmed that Philomin had recently left after eight years with Amazon. Philomin helped lead generative AI efforts and product strategy, and oversaw foundation models known as Amazon Titan. The spokesperson said Rajesh Sheth, a vice president previously overseeing Amazon Elastic Block Store, had assumed some of Philomin's responsibilities. Philomin left Amazon earlier in June. In his biography, Philomin said he helped create and lead Amazon Bedrock, a hub for using multiple AI models and one of AWS's premier products in its battle for AI supremacy. He was a frequent speaker at AWS events, including Amazon's annual cloud computing conference in Las Vegas. An Amazon spokesman noted that there are other vice presidents at AWS who also work on generative AI projects. Amazon is working to bolster its reputation in AI development, after rivals like OpenAI, and Google have taken an early lead, particularly with consumer-focused models. The Seattle-based online retailer and technology powerhouse has invested $8 billion in AI startup Anthropic and integrated its Claude software into its own products including a new revamped version of voice assistant Alexa that it's rolling out to customers this year. In December, Amazon introduced its Nova AI models which provide for text, video and image generation. Earlier this year, it added to the lineup with a version called Sonic that can more readily produce natural-sounding speech. Companies are employing creative techniques to hire top AI talent, including using sports industry data analysis to help identify undiscovered talent, Reuters reported last month. As a result, compensation has skyrocketed for some. However, as Amazon races to produce more advanced AI, it said it expects its own success will lead to fewer corporate jobs, according to a memo from CEO Andy Jassy last week. Job growth limits will be driven in particular by so-called agentic AI, which can perform tasks with minimal or even no additional input from people. 'As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today and more people doing other types of jobs,' Jassy wrote.
