All-new Fiat 500 will receive combustion alternative amid EV disinterest

Reflecting a growing trend of indifference to electric vehicles among all global automakers' customers, Fiat has now confirmed it will be reintroducing a petrol-powered option to its latest-generation 500.

Initially launched exclusively as an electric vehicle, the retro-inspired hatchback will soon be available with a hybrid powertrain. This decision comes after the all-electric 500e reportedly fell short of sales expectations, leading to production pauses. Pre-production of the hybrid 500 has commenced at Fiat's Mirafiori plant in Turin, with full-scale manufacturing slated to begin in November. The company anticipates an annual output of up to 100 000 units once production is fully operational. This move marks a significant pivot for Fiat, especially considering the previous generation petrol-powered 500 continued its European run until just last year and remains available in select non-EU markets.

While Fiat has yet to release official technical specifications for this new entry-level model, the provided images clearly reveal the presence of a manual gearbox. Sources in Italy suggest the hybrid powertrain will pair a six-speed manual transmission with a 1.0-litre mild-hybrid three-cylinder engine, expected to produce around 70 horsepower, mirroring the previous hybrid and the enduring Panda.
Visually, the hybrid variant, reportedly named the 500 Torino, maintains a strong resemblance to its electric sibling. The fuel cap's placement remains consistent, and the overall design language is largely unchanged. Inside, the most apparent difference will be the traditional gear lever and clutch pedal. While the instrument cluster in prototypes remains concealed, subtle variations from the EV's display are anticipated.
Interestingly, this return to combustion power will not extend to a revived Abarth version (yet). Fiat's performance division is committed to an EV-only strategy, deeming the mild-hybrid engine insufficient to meet Abarth's performance standards. Packaging constraints stemming from the 500's initial design as an EV, coupled with increasingly stringent emissions regulations, further solidify the electric future for the hot hatch variant, at least within Europe.

China and 53 African countries called on nations, especially the US, to return to the "right track" of resolving trade differences, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday. The statement came after China's foreign minister Wang Yi met with African officials in the city of Changsha located in southern Hunan province. The White House, in its April 2 "Liberation Day" tariff announcement, imposed some of the highest tariffs on several African countries. That included levies of: up to 50% on goods from Lesotho; 47% for Madagascar; 40% for Mauritius; 38% for Botswana; and 31% for South Africa, the continent's biggest exporter to the US. The China-Africa statement, made on behalf of China, 53 African countries and the African Union Commission said it "firmly opposed any party reaching a compromise deal at the expense of the interests of other countries." "We call on all countries, especially the United States, to return to the right track of resolving trade differences through consultation on an equal, respectful and reciprocal basis," the statement said. China is willing to implement zero-tariff measures for the 53 African countries that it has diplomatic relations with, the statement said, apart from Eswatini, the only African country that supports Taiwan. China's relations with African countries have strengthened as its own economy slows and it has emerged as Africa's biggest lender. In recent years, China has stepped up cooperation in areas from agriculture to infrastructure. The continent offers a much needed avenue for Chinese state-owned infrastructure firms struggling for projects as indebted local governments hold off on spending, and as a market for its electric vehicles and solar panels, areas where the US and EU say China has over-capacity.

Five nations and the EU, as well as airlines and aerospace firms worldwide, have urged the Trump administration not to impose new national security tariffs on imported commercial aircraft and parts, documents released on Tuesday showed. Airlines and aircraft manufacturers have been lobbying President Donald Trump to restore the tariff-free regime under the 1979 Civil Aircraft Agreement that has yielded an annual trade surplus of $75bn (R1.32-trillion) for the US industry. The documents made public by the US commerce department bared concerns about the fallout of possible new tariffs expressed by companies as well as Canada, China, Japan, Mexico and Switzerland, besides the EU. 'As reliable trading partners, the EU and US should strengthen their trade regarding aircraft and aircraft parts, rather than hinder it by imposing trade restrictions,' the EU wrote. It would consider its options 'to ensure a level playing field', it added. Trump has imposed tariffs of 10% on nearly all aircraft and parts imports. 'No country or region should attempt to support the development of its domestic aircraft manufacturing industry by suppressing foreign competitors,' the Chinese government wrote. Separately, US manufacturer Boeing cited a recent trade deal unveiled in May with Britain that ensures tariff-free treatment for aircraft and parts. 'The US should ensure duty-free treatment for commercial aircraft and their parts in any negotiated trade agreement, similar to its efforts with the UK,' Boeing told the commerce department in a filing. Mexico said in 2024 it exported $1.45bn (R25.7bn) in aircraft parts, a 10th of the total, to the US. The EU said it took US exports of aircraft worth about $12bn (R212.72bn), while exporting about $8bn (R141.82bn) of aircraft to the US. In early May, the commerce department launched a 'section 232" national security investigation into imports of commercial aircraft, jet engines and parts that could form the basis for higher tariffs on such imports. Last week, Delta Air Lines and major trade groups warned of tariffs' impact on ticket prices, aviation safety and supply chains. 'US tariffs on aviation are putting domestic production of commercial aircraft at risk,' Airbus Americas CEO Robin Hayes said in a filing. 'It is not realistic or sensible today to create a 100% domestic supply chain in any country.' Boeing said it had been increasing US content in its aircraft over the past decade and its newest models, the 737 MAX 10 and 777X, would have 'more than 88% domestically-sourced content'. The United Auto Workers union, which represents 10,000 aerospace workers, said it supports tariffs and domestic production quotas, adding US aerospace employment has fallen to 510,000 in 2024 from 850,000 in 1990. 'To safeguard the aerospace supply chain across the commercial and defence sectors, comprehensive tariffs and production quotas on several products are needed,' it said. JetBlue Airways opposed new tariffs, however, saying: 'Trade policy should reinforce, not destabilise, the proven systems that keep our aircraft flying safely and affordably.'
