The San Diego Padres are looking for a left fielder. And they should be. According to MLB Trade Rumors, "no team in baseball has gotten less from the left field position this season than the Padres, whose left fielders have combined for an unimpressive minus-0.7 bWAR over the team's first 50 games."
Even with the MLB trade deadline more than two months away, the Padres are already exploring deals to upgrade the position — an urgent need if they want to stay in the nail-biting three-team race for the National League West pennant.

Maddie Malhotra/BostonThe Friars, approximately one-third of the way through the schedule, sit two games in back of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and one behind the second-place San Francisco Giants.
The Boston Red Sox may be able to meet that need, as well as meet a need of their own.
After calling up their No. 2 prospect — the No. 8 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline's rankings — Marcelo Mayer on Saturday, and starting the season with another top prospect, second baseman Kristian Campbell, already on the big league roster, Boston has one highly ranked prospect remaining at Triple-A Worcester.

That prospect, 21-year-old Roman Anthony, is not only the top prospect in the Red Sox system, but the overall No. 1 in the game.

Anthony would appear to have nothing left to prove at the minor league level. At Worcester this season, the West Palm Beach, Florida, native boasts a .971 OPS — highest in the International League of any hitter with at least 150 at-bats — and a .321 batting average, also tops that category.
But the Red Sox have yet to find a place for Anthony with all three outfield spots occupied. Trading left fielder Jarren Duran, the MVP of the 2024 All-Star Game, to San Diego would open up that spot for Anthony.
Duran would make an attractive target for the Padres, on an economical $3.75 million one-year contract and under team control through 2028. His contact contains a 2026 club option for $8 million, but if that option is declined, Duran would again be eligible for salary arbitration.

Why would the Red Sox part with Duran? The fact is, he simply is not living up to the standards he set last year, so far. His OPS is down to .762 from .834 last season. He belted 21 home runs in 2024. At his current pace, given the same number of plate appearances (735), he would hit only 12 this year.
Defensively, in his All-Star season, Duran led all centerfielders who played at least 800 innings at the position with 17 defensive runs saved, according to Fangraphs. Playing almost exclusively left field this time around, Duran currently has a DRS number of just one.
Duran is again leading the American League in triples (six), but even with some decline, the Red Sox left fielder is still significantly better than any option the Padres currently have at the position.

At age 28, turning 29 on Sept. 5, Duran is no longer a prospect. His long-term upside would appear to be considerably lower that that of the 21-year-old Anthony. For the Padres, however, he would provide an upgrade immediately as they battle to win their division.
The Red Sox remain in need of a first baseman since the season-ending injury to Triton Casas on May 2. Padres utility man Gavin Sheets, who has 97 major league games at first on his resumé, would make a likely piece of a larger package in return for Duran.

The Padres trade package would also likely include prospects. The Red Sox, in need of big league-ready relief pitching, could take righty fireballer Francis Pena, who currently has 22 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings for the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas.
Pena continues to struggle with control, but could provide a much-needed fresh arm in waiting for an overtaxed Red Sox bullpen.

Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record
DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Advertisement Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Advertisement Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.' Alonso's path toward becoming the Mets' career home run leader began when he set the major league record for rookies with 53 in 2019. He has hit at least 34 homers in each of his five full big league seasons and is on pace for 41 this year. Advertisement 'Pete's been pretty incredible this year. He's been locked in every single at-bat,' said teammate Jeff McNeil, who also hit two home runs Sunday. 'Seems like big situations he's going to do some damage. 'It's fun to watch and I feel like he's putting on a show every time he's at the ballpark.' ___ AP MLB: Michael Kelly, The Associated Press

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tearns ACL, will miss rest of 2025 WNBA season
Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tearns ACL, will miss rest of 2025 WNBA season Show Caption Hide Caption Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith are back together again in Chicago USAT's Meghan Hall joins Sports Seriously's Mackenzie Salmon to talk about the duo in Chicago that is Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith. Sports Seriously The 2025 WNBA season hasn't been the best start for the Chicago Sky. And now, the team was dealt a major blow to a star. Guard Courtney Vandersloot suffered a torn right torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Saturday's loss to the Indiana Fever, the Sky announced. She will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season. The injury happened in the first quarter against Indiana in the first ever WNBA game at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls. Vandersloot was driving to the basket when she immediately went down and was in visible pain as she grabbed her right knee. Her teammates huddled around her, and she was eventually taken back to the locker room with the help of medical staff. She didn't return for the remainder of the contest. The Fever won the game 79-52. It's a brutal injury as the WNBA veteran was playing her first season back with the team that selected her No. 3 overall in the 2011 draft. Vandersloot spent the first 11 seasons with Chicago and was instrumental in the team capturing its first WNBA title in 2021. She signed with the New York Liberty in 2023 and spent two seasons with the team, helping the Liberty win their first championship last year. A five-time WNBA All-Star, Vandersloot is second in league history in assists with 2,887 career dimes, trailing Sue Bird's 3,234 assists. She also owns several franchise records in Chicago, including most games played, points, assists and steals, while ranking in the top five of several other categories. She re-signed with the team in February. "She's our engine," Sky coach Tyler Marsh said following the game against Indiana. "She's our captain and our leader out there, so obviously, it's a huge blow." Vandersloot averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and a team-high 5.3 assists per game in seven games played. Chicago is 2-5 on the season, standing in 11th place in the league as the team tries to get back to the postseason after missing it in 2024. "It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking to watch anybody, but especially one of our teammates and someone that means as much as Sloot does to this team and organization," Hailey Van Lith said postgame. "Whatever is in store in the future for this team, I trust we will find a way to make this moment mean something in the end." Contributing: Nancy Armour
