Japan to provide defence equipment to Thailand, seven other nations

TOKYO: (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Japan plans to supply defence equipment to Thailand, Tonga and six other nations in the current fiscal year as security aid, a government source said Friday (June 20), in bid to ensure safe sea lanes in the Indo-Pacific region where China is evolving its military posture.
According to Kyodo news agency the eight countries -- also including East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Sri Lanka -- are expected to be designated as the recipients of Japan's "official security assistance" (OSA) framework, designed for like-minded partners, for fiscal 2025 from April, the source said.
The government is considering providing them Japanese-made drones to help in their natural disaster relief and maritime surveillance missions, according to the source.
Japan launched the OSA scheme in April 2023 to help developing countries strengthen their defence capabilities amid security concerns such as the Chinese forces' increasing assertiveness at sea and in the air.
In the past two fiscal years through 2024, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia and the Philippines were recipients of the assistance programme.
In May, Japan gave the Fiji navy a rescue boat and surveillance equipment, in its first delivery under the OSA framework.
In its fiscal 2025 initial budget, Japan earmarked 8.1 billion yen (US$56 million) for OSA assistance, up from 2 billion yen in fiscal 2023 and 5 billion yen in fiscal 2024. - Bernama-Kyodo

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the government to introduce a comprehensive Food Waste Act to tackle the alarming rate of food wastage in Malaysia, while also encouraging Malaysians to grow their own vegetables and herbs to cope with rising food prices. Subbarow said such a law would enable Malaysia to address environmental, social and economic challenges related to food waste, while supporting its commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Subbarow said most Malaysians do not realise the scale of the issue, adding: "We live in a country blessed with delicious food, but unfortunately, we often discard edible items without thinking, and this contributes significantly to national food waste." "The only way to change this societal habit is through an effective law that encourages responsible consumption and educates the public," he said. He pointed out that France passed a pioneering law in 2016 which bans supermarkets from throwing away unsold edible food, requiring them instead to donate it to charities. 'Malaysia can learn from such examples,' he added. Subbarow also welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent directive for government departments to stop using imported goods, particularly food, at official events, saying it was a timely move that complements efforts to reduce waste and support local producers. "We fully support the Prime Minister's call. Prioritising local produce empowers farmers and reduces the environmental cost of long-haul food transport," he said.

ALOR SETAR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Chief of the Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaafar headed the list of recipients of state honours in conjunction with the 83rd birthday of the Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah Aman, today. Mohd Nizam was conferred the Darjah Datuk Seri Setia Pahlawan Yang Amat Dihormati (SSPK), which carries the title 'Datuk Seri Pahlawan', at an investiture ceremony held at Istana Anak Bukit here. The Sultanah of Kedah, Sultanah Maliha Tengku Ariff; the Raja Muda of Kedah, Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah; and the Tunku Mahkota of Kedah, Tunku Shazuddin Ariff, also graced the ceremony. Japan spots Chinese ships near disputed isles for record 216 straight days

The Tokyo-administered islands, known as the Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan, have long been a sore point between the neighbours. On June 22, Japan said it observed four Chinese coast guard vessels sailing in the 'contiguous' zone, referring to a 12-nautical-mile band that extends beyond Japan's territorial waters. In 2024, Chinese vessels sailed near the Tokyo-administered island chain a record 355 times, including for a period of 215 consecutive days, a Japanese coast guard spokesman told AFP. Japanese officials regularly protest the presence of the Chinese coast guard and other vessels in the waters surrounding the remote, disputed islands. Relations between Japan and China were strained by Tokyo's decision to 'nationalise' some of the islands in 2012. On June 20, Japan's coast guard and its US and Filipino counterparts staged joint training drills off Japan's south-west shore – the second time the countries' coast guards have held training drills together, and the first in Japan. Territorial disputes with China have pushed Japan to forge deeper ties with the Philippines and the United States. Earlier in June, Tokyo and Beijing traded barbs over close encounters between their military planes over the Pacific high seas. - AFP
