Food drive to commemorate World Hunger Day

The Citizen19-05-2025
Gearing up for World Hunger Day on 28 May, NPO Walk in Faith is rallying the community, schools and businesses to lend a hand to help raise awareness about the plight of many – the daily struggle for food.
As an organisation that assists the vulnerable and needy with food hampers and school lunch packs, Walk in Faith calls on everyone to come together and make a contribution of non-perishable items for redistribution to those in need.
Founder Merinda Ackerman said this is not just another day on the calendar, but a chance for Zululanders to come together and make a real difference.
Arboretum Primary School has heeded the call, handing over a massive haul of foodstuffs collected by the school last week.
'World Hunger Day is an annual day focused on raising awareness and encouraging action to end world hunger. And this is a reminder that millions of people globally struggle with food insecurity and malnutrition,' said Ackerman.
'Imagine if every step we took, every smile we shared, and every little donation we made added up to a future where no one had to worry about their next meal. Walk in Faith is all about believing in the power of community.
'It is about knowing that you and I together can transform hunger into hope.
'Whether you're donating, volunteering, or simply sharing our message, every act of kindness is a stride towards change, and often the smallest gestures spark the biggest ripples.
'This month, let us lace up our sneakers, open our hearts, and walk this journey side-by-side to join this challenge and create a world where compassion triumphs over hunger.'
If you would like to make a donation of food, contact 081 5382331. Deliveries can be made to 38 Raphia Palm, Arboretum, Richards Bay.

Help Helen say goodbye to her twin sister

Help Helen say goodbye to her twin sister Imagine receiving news that your twin has been diagnosed with terminal cancer in New Zealand while you are living in Zululand. This is the reality for one Zululander, Helen 'Pug' Prinsloo, who has not seen her twin sister for 11 years. Known as the cat whisperer by her Richards Bay SPCA colleagues – who describe her as selfless, gentle and hardworking – Helen has helped countless animals. Using its platform to raise R200 000 for her trip to say goodbye, the organisation expressed in an emotional Facebook post, 'Her twin sister, who lives in New Zealand, is the only family she has left in this world. They haven't seen each other in 11 years — not because they didn't want to, but because life and circumstances made it impossible. 'Helen became deaf as a young child and was unable to emigrate with her family. She stayed behind in South Africa with nothing but her quiet strength, her deep love for animals, and her sister's voice in her heart.' With oncologists predicting her sister has only about four months left to live due to her aggressive cancer, Helen cannot imagine not saying goodbye to the person she shared her first breath with. Feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders, she relies solely on her modest non-profit salary that barely covers her necessities, she has no family in South Africa, no savings, and besides her colleagues, no support. While R200 000 is a considerable sum, donations will contribute towards applying for emergency travel documents, a visa, and return airfare. Successful rescue of distressed sailing yacht near Richards Bay

A local sailing yacht with seven crew onboard was successfully pulled back to safety after it experienced a mechanical failure and was drifting at sea, north of Richards Bay recently. The yacht had departed Richards Bay two weeks when it experienced a motor mechanical failure, forcing them to turn around. 'Nearing Richards Bay, against strong south-westerly winds, gusting in excess of 15 knots and in three-to-four metre rough sea swells, they requested assistance 15 nautical miles north of Richards Bay – about four nautical miles offshore of the lighthouse,' said National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach. He said the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre and NSRI Richards Bay were alerted to reports from Ocean Sailing Association of South Africa, and the Commodore of the Zululand Yacht Club of the sailing yacht. 'Our duty crew responded to our NSRI Richards Bay station 19 rescue base, where the NSRI rescue craft Ocean Guardian was launched. 'On arrival on the scene, a towline was rigged, and we towed them into the Port of Richards Bay to a safe berth at the Zululand Yacht Club, and they required no further assistance.' Young volunteers put furry friends first at Edupaw

A DEDICATED duo of Edupaw volunteers, Skhona Mbanjwa and Sbusiso Mokoena, have spent the past six years working with the NPO following their graduation from its canine care programme. Also read: Raising awareness one snare at a time They each joined as students in 2019 and soon after returned to volunteer. Founder of Edupaw, Cathy Keegan, said Skhona and Sbusiso are currently a vital part of the organisation's team of eight. 'They feed our dogs, de-worm and bathe them, fit their collars and leads, and help set up and pack up for each class. They are remarkable young people, spending their weekdays at school, yet give up their Saturdays to volunteer,' said Keegan. She said that many of the NPO's volunteers walk long distances from local townships to be a part of Edu Paw, and in return they receive food for their own dogs. Keegan said that while Edupaw volunteers deserve more for the good work they do, the NPO's limited funding only stretches so far.
