Successful rescue of distressed sailing yacht near Richards Bay
The yacht had departed Richards Bay two weeks when it experienced a motor mechanical failure, forcing them to turn around.
'Nearing Richards Bay, against strong south-westerly winds, gusting in excess of 15 knots and in three-to-four metre rough sea swells, they requested assistance 15 nautical miles north of Richards Bay – about four nautical miles offshore of the lighthouse,' said National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach.
He said the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre and NSRI Richards Bay were alerted to reports from Ocean Sailing Association of South Africa, and the Commodore of the Zululand Yacht Club of the sailing yacht.
'Our duty crew responded to our NSRI Richards Bay station 19 rescue base, where the NSRI rescue craft Ocean Guardian was launched.
'On arrival on the scene, a towline was rigged, and we towed them into the Port of Richards Bay to a safe berth at the Zululand Yacht Club, and they required no further assistance.'

Book drive in honour of Mandela Day
In celebration of Mandela Day, Shelly Centre hosted a book drive under the banner #ShellyCares, collecting over 300 children's books to help ignite a love for reading among local learners. The campaign ran from July 1 to 17, encouraged the public to donate books suitable for learners in Grades 1 to 7. The initiative concluded with a special handover at Marburg Primary, where the books will now contribute to building a more vibrant school library and literacy future. The handover was held recently and was attended by the principal, school governing body, learners, and representatives from the Educare Foundation, which generously contributed 50 books. RocoMamas Shelly Centre supported the event by donating coffee, adding warmth to the occasion. Shelly Centre's Mandela Day campaign was supported through a multi-channel activation that included a press ad, social media engagement, influencer content, and centre-based promoters who helped spread awareness and drive donations. The school came alive with the cheerful sounds of play, music, and heartfelt connection, as they celebrated Mandela Day. For many of the visiting children, it was their first experience in a structured early learning environment, and it unfolded into a day of genuine joy, warmth, and shared humanity. The school's marketing and admissions officer Stephanie Mundell said: 'Today wasn't just about celebration, it was about connection. These are the moments where real learning happens, when children experience empathy, not as a lesson, but as an act.' The day was filled with hands-on, heart-led activities. The children painted side by side, swapped songs and giggles, shared stories, and formed bonds with new friends, all under the nurturing eyes of educators committed to creating inclusive and meaningful learning spaces. 'It reminds us that compassion doesn't need to be taught, it needs to be shown, shared, and lived.'
