Masidi engages UMS students at forum
KOTA KINABALU (May 24): More than 500 students gathered at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for an open dialogue forum titled 'Destinasi SMJ Anak Muda 2.0', featuring Sabah's Minister of Finance, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, on Saturday.
The forum, organised by Institut Kerjasama Kerajaan dan Rakyat (IKRAR), Chief Minister's Department, provided a platform for students to voice their concerns, share ideas and gain insights into the State Government's policies and development plans.
IKRAR director Azrul bin Ibrahim moderated the forum where issues discussed include solving UMS water supply, Sabah's current economic direction, student welfare and the job market.
Masidi assured the students that the government is committed to addressing their concerns, especially in areas that directly impact youth and education.
'We are listening. The concerns of our youth – whether it's water, education or job opportunities, are not falling on deaf ears. The government is committed to real, tangible solutions.
'The energy and ideas shared today reaffirm my belief that Sabah is in good hands. Our youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow – they are already playing their crucial roles today,' he said.
Masidi also encouraged young Sabahans to remain engaged, informed, and involved in shaping the future of the State.
The session was well-received, with many students expressing appreciation for the opportunity to speak directly with a senior member of the Cabinet.

Sabah GLCs mostly ‘blackholes'

Kota Kinabalu: A majority of the 250-odd Sabah GLCs (Government-linked companies) are like 'blackholes' sucking away financial resources from Sabah. But there are a few bright stars. 'These statutory bodies and GLCs produced only RM143m dividends to the Sabah Government, of which RM50m was from SMJ Energy. Only a small number can generate dividends for the government. The performance of the rest is pathetic,' said Datuk John Lo, a former banker and now in the Sabah Economic Action Council (SEAC). Advertisement The other profitable GLCs include Sabah Foundation's subsidiary Innoprise, Sabah Energy Corporation, Sogip, Sogdc, POIC Lahad Datu, Suria Capital, Sabah Credit Corporation and Sawit Kinabalu. Lo was a guest panel speaker at the NGO Sabar – Kopi Tiam Council podcast on 'Oversight & Reform of government-Linked Companies (GLCs) Transparency, accountability & Corruption Prevention session, recently. 'Most are either non-performing or underperforming,' Lo said and pointed out that GLCs hold many monopolistic rights for example, cement [Sabah Cement Industries], ports [Suria, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu], water [Jetama] and fishing landing rights [Safma]. They have been granted very cheap but extremely prime land, most of them at RM1,000 premium. [Innoprise, SUDC, subsidiary of Sedco, Suria, SICC, Sabah Energy, TAED.]. Advertisement Others have been vast acreage of valuable agricultural land for free or at nominal premium. [Sawit Kinabalu, KPD, Sabah Softwood.] Then there are those who have been granted cheap and valuable land for industrial park [KKIP, Sogip, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu, Asian Supply Base in Labuan] or granted concession rights in oil and gas, river and sea sand [Sabah Energy, Sabah Gas, SMJ Energy, Sedco]. GLCs are also into hotels, resorts and jungle resorts [Innoprise, Sedco and Sabah Air] or granted exclusive JV preference with Sabahan and non-Sabahan companies. 'Most significantly, many GLCs have become a huge liability and drag on Sabah's economic growth. Allowing GLCs to continue without proper governance will result in serious economic consequences. Sabah can never catch up,' he said. In most cases the political appointments of chairmen, board of directors and senior management have been inappropriate. 'GLCs are still bleeding losses year in year out. Sabahans are subsiding these losses that have easily run into billions the last 35 years. The accumulated losses are staggering,' he said. What is worse is that some of these GLCs have sold or entered into JVs in many valuable assets like prime commercial and agriculture land, buildings, monopolies and concessions, most of which are lopsided against Sabah. These GLCs have taken huge loans from the government and banks [especially SDB] that they cannot service or repay, often forcing Sabah taxpayers to bail them out. 'They enter into many lopsided JV agreements against the interests of Sabah. They have the greatest number of failed JV projects that need rescue by 'white knights'. 'These billions of dividends can be tax free and can transform Sabah's economic ownership back to Sabahans. The greatest impact is job creation. If each GLC, on average, can create an additional 100 jobs, there will be additional 25,000 jobs!' said Lo. 'This money could have been used for the hard-core poor, repair or investment in infrastructures, health, scholarships or to build two or three universities. 'The GLCs have many JV projects that are suspended or non-start for years.' 'SDB's revamp is showing encouraging results. Keep an eye on Sabah Energy as it will be the new performing star.' Lo was pleased that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has appointed suitable Sabahans to head some boards and management e.g. SDB, SMJ Energy, Sabah Energy, Sogip, Sogdc and the latest, a new Group GM for Sedco. Hajiji has appointed advisors on the economy, oil and gas, energy, tourism and international affairs. Notably, he said state Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun has appointed a task force on GLCs. Masidi has also appointed an oversight committee for GLCs. 'Hopefully, the revamp of GLCs will lead some of them to be listed on Bursa. Bursa will impose demanding and stringent governance requirements on these GLCs. 'GLCs that have independent board of directors and professional management appointed by Hajiji and Masidi are turning around with noticeable improvements. 'It is imperative that future Sabah governments continue to revamp, rationalise the GLCs. 'Focusing on and sorting out the mess in Sabah's GLCs is a critical economic issue for every Sabahan, especially for the present young generation and their children. These GLCs are eroding away their future. 'I hope all Sabahans, every man, every woman, every voter, after listening to Sabar's podcast, will support the reformation, transformation and rationalization of Sabah's GLCs. ‘More should be involved in remembering Double Six tragedy'

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government expects greater participation in next year's 50th anniversary of the Double Six tragedy, with plans to invite federal leaders and involve more students from schools and universities. Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin said this would help deepen the public's understanding of the tragedy's historical significance. He said this was discussed with several leaders during the 49th anniversary commemoration held at the crash site in Sembulan yesterday, which included a wreath-laying ceremony and a poetry competition featuring 132 participants, a sign of continued public engagement with the legacy of the crash. 'This is to ensure that we continue to remember this tragedy and reaffirm the facts about Sabah's political history,' said Ellron. The Double Six tragedy, which occurred on June 6, 1976, claimed the life of then chief minister Tun Fuad Stephens and wiped out nearly half of Sabah's state Cabinet, marking a turning point in the state's political landscape. The other 10 victims were his eldest son Johari, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Datuk Chong Thien Vun, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Darius Binion, Datuk Wahid Peter Andau, Dr Syed Hussein Wafa, Ishak Atan, Korp Said Mohammad and Gandhi J. Nathan. Although the official investigation report was declassified in 2023, questions and public scepticism about the cause of the crash persist. Meanwhile, NGO Sunduvan Sabah continues its efforts to have the tragedy included in Sabah's school syllabus as part of efforts to educate the younger generation. Its chairman Aloysius Danim Siap said the incident must be formally shared with younger generations of Sabahans. The group will present its proposal to the state education director and publish a book compiling verified historical records, personal testimonies and an analysis of the social and political impact of the crash. Meanwhile, the upcoming redevelopment of Prince Philip Park at Tanjung Aru could provide greater prominence to the Double Six tragedy. Tanjung Aru Eco-Development Sdn Bhd (TAED) chairman Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said plans are in place to include a memorial replica of the ill-fated Nomad aircraft as part of the park's redevelopment. 'The idea is not to relocate the existing memorial in Sembulan, but to create an additional site of remembrance within the redeveloped Prince Philip Park,' he said after attending the 49th Double Six anniversary commemoration. 'We understand that some family members of the victims may feel uncomfortable about a replica being displayed as it could revive painful memories. I respect that and would like to meet them personally to explain our intentions. If they object, we are willing to adjust our plans,' he said. He stressed that the memorial is not meant to sensationalise the incident, but rather to honour the legacy of the leaders who perished. He estimated the cost of the Double Six memorial component to be between RM100,000 and RM200,000, forming a small part of the larger RM35mil park revitalisation. He also cited a recent talk he gave to an NGO in Peninsular Malaysia, where most of the attendees had never heard of the Double Six incident. 'This is why I support the idea of incorporating the Double Six tragedy and its historical context into the national school syllabus,' he said.
