
WhatsApp Breaks Ad-Free Legacy with New Sponsored Status Updates
In a move that marks a turning point in WhatsApp's history, Meta has begun introducing advertisements into the messaging app, a stark departure from the founders' original pledge of 'No Ads! No Games! No Gimmicks!' This development officially ends WhatsApp's more than ten-year tradition of providing users with a purely ad-free communication platform.
Meta, which acquired WhatsApp back in 2014, explained that the ads will be confined to the 'Updates' tab, which houses the app's Status feature — similar to Instagram Stories — where users post disappearing content such as photos, videos, and text updates. Now, users will begin to see sponsored content from businesses appear in this section.
'If you only use WhatsApp to chat with friends and loved ones there is no change to your experience at all,' Meta clarified in its official announcement.
Still, this rollout could be a precursor to broader monetization strategies. In 2024 alone, Meta earned over $160 billion in advertising revenue through its platforms, particularly Facebook and Instagram. With WhatsApp joining that lineup, users may wonder how much of the app's original ethos will be preserved.
Meta insists that these ads are designed with 'privacy in mind' and emphasized that they won't access personal messages, calls, or user-posted statuses — all of which remain end-to-end encrypted. Instead, ad targeting will be limited to general data like a user's location, language, the channels they follow, and how they interact with ads.
Despite these assurances, the decision still raises concerns, especially considering WhatsApp's origins as a privacy-first, user-focused app. Co-founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton have been outspoken in their disapproval of advertising in messaging platforms. A 2012 blog post by WhatsApp reminded users: 'Remember, when advertising is involved you the user are the product.'
This shift could signal a philosophical divergence for the platform — one that may affect how users perceive and interact with it going forward.

Such concerns can be particularly troublesome in case there is a tacit or unknown co-operation between American tech companies and different militaries. In the past we have seen tech companies like Google, Microsoft and others work with Israeli government and its military to provide certain services, although tech companies deny that their services are used for military purposes by the same time, Israeli companies like NSO — of Pegasus spyware fame — often target apps like WhatsApp to hack into people's phones, including iPhones. Meta eyes Prada for next AI smart glasses, Ray-Ban Gen 3 nearing launch
Meta is reportedly teaming up with luxury fashion house Prada to develop its next generation of AI-powered smart glasses, expanding its eyewear strategy beyond Ray-Ban. Although the Prada collaboration has not been formally announced yet, if the reports turn out to be true, the partnership will mark Meta's entry into high-end fashion tech for its Meta smart glasses lineup. This collaboration will also build on Prada's long-standing eyewear licensing deal with EssilorLuxottica. advertisementFor those who don't know, EssilorLuxottica owns RayBan, which Meta has been working with for years. However, unlike the Ray-Ban version, the Oakley glasses may also feature a centrally placed camera, reportedly to help athletes like cyclists capture a better field of Oakley smart glasses will be Meta's third-edition of the product, with the second-generation Ray-Bans released last year. The current model of the Meta smart glasses includes features such as hands-free AI support, photo and video capture, language translation, and audio playback, all of which is integrated into frames like the Wayfarer and the newer Skyler. New Delhi: The Iranian government has reportedly urged its citizen to remove WhatsApp from their smartphones. Iran has alleged that the messaging app gathered user information and data to send to Israel. As per a report in the Associated Press, Iranian State television has appealed to the people to delete WhatsApp from their smartphones. The allegations on WhatsApp sneaking out user data comes amidst escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran that entered its sixth consecutive day on Wednesday. The AP also published statement given by WhatsApp on the Iranian government's allegation. WhatsApp, said it was "concerned these false reports will be an excuse for our services to be blocked at a time when people need them the most." "End-to-end encryption keeps your private messages and calls between you and the person you're chatting with. No one other than the people in the chat can read, listen, or share them, not even WhatsApp. This is because when end-to-end encryption is enabled, your messages are digitally locked and the digital key to open that lock and read the message is only with you and the person who received the message. All this happens automatically. You don't need to enable any special settings to keep your messages secure," it says.
