Marlins rookie second baseman Ronny Simón commits 3 errors in 3 innings

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Miami Marlins rookie second baseman Ronny Simón committed three errors in three innings that helped the San Diego Padres rally from a six-run deficit to tie the game 6-6 on Tuesday night.
Simón originally had been charged with a fourth error but the official scorer changed it that call to a single by Xander Bogaerts.
Simón's misfortunes started in the second when he dove for Tyler Wade's grounder, which deflected off his glove for an RBI single and rolled into foul territory. He chased down the ball and his errant throw pulled catcher Agustín Ramírez well off the plate, allowing another run to score.
Simón's fielding error allowed Wade to reach leading off the fourth. Simón fielded Fernando Tatis Jr.'s grounder and tried to force Wade at second but his throw went over shortstop Javier Sanoja's head for another error. Wade scored on Luis Arraez's single to tie it at 6.
Simón was replaced in the bottom of the fifth when Javier Sanoja moved over from shortstop. Otto Lopez entered at shortstop and in Simón's spot in the order.
San Diego went ahead 7-6 in the fifth.

Blue Jackets centre Monahan awarded Masterton Trophy for resilience and leadership

NEW YORK – Columbus Blue Jackets centre Sean Monahan has been awarded the 2024-25 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, the NHL announced Thursday. The award honours perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey, commemorating Bill Masterton, a Minnesota North Stars player who died from an on-ice injury in 1968, and is voted on annually by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Monahan earned the trophy for his resilience and leadership after the tragic death of his close friend and teammate Johnny Gaudreau last August. He signed with Columbus last July to reunite with Gaudreau, with whom he played nine seasons in Calgary. Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were struck and killed by a driver charged with impaired driving while they were cycling in New Jersey on Aug. 29, 2024. Monahan finished the season with 19 goals and 38 assists for 57 points in 54 games. England fast bowler Brydon Carse considered getting toe amputated

LONDON (AP) — England fast bowler Brydon Carse said he considered getting a toe amputated after encountering longstanding problems because of his bowling action. The damage to his second toe on his left foot became so bad over the winter when playing for England that Carse was forced to pull out midway through its Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan and withdraw from a lucrative deal in the Indian Premier League. The 29-year-old Carse explored every option to deal with the issue, including a drastic remedy. 'It ended up being quite a severe wound I was playing with for the majority of the winter. It got infected a couple of times,' said Carse, speaking on Thursday ahead of England's first Twenty20 against the West Indies on Friday. 'It is a bit of a running joke in the changing room, my second toe. So we came up with the thought, 'Can we just get rid of the second toe?' 'Everyone has had their opinion on my second toe. At one stage I was going to bed thinking, 'I could actually do this, I think I could get rid of my second toe.' But then the medical staff said you need it for balance so that was quickly ruled out.' England test captain Ben Stokes' late father, Ged, famously took a similar course of action in his rugby league days, removing his middle finger at the knuckle to speed up his return to action. Carse has just returned to action and was picked on Thursday in England's 14-man squad for the five-match test series against India. ___ AP cricket:

Liverpool rejects Barcelona approach for Luis Diaz, AP source says

Liverpool has rejected an approach from Barcelona for forward Luis Diaz, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information has not been made public. Spanish champion Barcelona is looking to strengthen, and Diaz and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford were on a list of reported targets. It is not known how much Barcelona was prepared to pay for Colombia international Diaz, but Liverpool informed the Catalan club he was not for sale, the person said. The 28-year-old Diaz scored 17 goals in Liverpool's Premier League title-winning campaign last season. He scored a hat trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and was a key figure in attack for manager Arne Slot. Liverpool is also looking to make additions during the offseason, with Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz a reported target. But the Merseyside club sees Diaz as an important part of its plans to retain the Premier League title next year and make a push in the Champions League. In that time he was won the league, FA Cup and two English League Cups, scoring 41 goals in 148 games. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:
