The enthusiasm of recharged forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan won't force the hand of the Western Bulldogs to get him back on the field.
Ugle-Hagan returned to the club last week after a prolonged absence that included a 30-day stay at a wellness retreat as he addressed off-field issues.
In a podcast last weekend, the No.1 pick positively announced his desire to play footy again, even as early as this year.
'I want to play footy. I can't wait to play footy,' he said.
'I want to kick a f--king goal in front of those crowds. I have been watching every single Bulldogs game. I have been supporting them, been watching them.
'I will go to games at the end of the year. I genuinely want to play one more (game), I want to play some games – it's going to be grouse.'
Luke Beveridge (left) has declared Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (right) 'a long way off'. Picture:Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge on Wednesday said he hadn't listened to Ugle-Hagan's candid interview.
But given his chance to address Ugle-Hagan's enthusiasm, Beveridge firmly declared the forward was 'a long way off' playing even at VFL level.
'He's a long way off ready to play, so that's all I'll say,' he said.
'I think with Jamarra – if he's going to be a weekly question – you'll just be wasting your time because he won't play at state-league level or at AFL level for a while.
'No use keep asking; you're probably going to take your own angles on it and that's up to you, but this one is about Sydney versus Western Bulldogs.'
The Bulldogs, who travel to Sydney this weekend, have eight matches left in the home-and-away season.
Ugle-Hagan, who is contracted through to the end of 2026, also expressed his desire to remain at the Bulldogs next season despite trade rumours.

Much-loved Hawthorn champion Luke Breust calls time on AFL career

Hawthorn champion Luke Breust has announced he is retiring at the end of the season. Breust told teammates of the decision on Thursday. It will bring an end to one of the great AFL careers that began over 15 years ago. Breust was plucked from obscurity in the 2009 rookie draft and has gone on to play 306 games and counting. Quickly cementing his spot in the forward line, Breust instantly became a fan favourite with his class around goal a highlight. Breust was a key member of Hawthorn's three-peat, playing in all three premierships, as well as earning All-Australian honours in 2014 and 2018. He has kicked over 40 goals in eight separate seasons for an overall tally of 552, which is the seventh most in club history. He is also ranked fourth at the club for total games and will draw level with coach Sam Mitchell in third place should he play one more game this year. After managing just five senior games this year, Breust was recalled for last week's win over Collingwood, coming on as a substitute in the big win. 'Having delivered three premierships and countless more amazing memories to the Hawthorn family, 'Punky' should be incredibly proud of everything he has achieved across his career,' CEO Ash Klein said. 'Along with his extraordinary talent, Luke has always been such an admired and respected Hawthorn person, with his professionalism, reliability and consistency shining through. 'On behalf of the entire club, I'd like to congratulate Luke, his wife Anthea, and their daughter Freya, for everything they have done for Hawthorn.'

Brisbane Broncos star defects from Australia

Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Payne Haas has sensationally defected from Australia. The Broncos prop has made a call to knock back his chance to ever wear a Kangaroos jersey again, instead making a decision to play for Samoa at international level. As first reported by Code Sports, Haas has privately informed a number of Samoan players he will be playing with them during this year's Pacific Championships. It is a hammer blow to the Kangaroos jersey and for new coach Kevin Walters just weeks after his appointment was confirmed. Payne Haas. Photo by. Haas' decision to play for Samoa is yet another hammer blow to the Green and Gold jersey with a number of other superstar players electing not to represent their country. The NSW State of Origin forward has been processing his decision for a number of months. Keeping Haas in the Green and Gold was widely seen as Walters' first priority after taking the job. His next job will be to stop Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui from switching to Samoa at international level. Haas' NSW teammates Jarome Luai, Brian To'o and Steve Crichton already represent Samoa, and they will be hopeful more players will join them ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Walters' Kangaroos begin their Tour of the UK on October 25. Walters is only contracted until the end of the year. The former Queensland coach said last month he intended to sit down with Haas. Payne Haas at broncos training at Red Hill . Pic Annette Dew 'In time I will but that's probably not a conversation for today,' Walters said. 'I just want to explain to those players that are contemplating (defecting), I totally understand their situation but let's get the Kangaroos opportunity in front of them and see where they're at with that. 'We'll move forward from there. One thing about the Australian rugby league team is that there's great talent. We know that. 'If some players elect to play for Pasifika nations or whatever nation, we've got plenty of depth here in Australia.' He said he would respect players if they choose not to play for Australia. Rugby league icon and former Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said last month Walters should not feel compelled to chase any players that did not want to play for Australia. 'They (Haas, Fa'asuamaleaui and Tabuai-Fidow) are all great players but there are other players who are just as good,' Meninga said on SEN radio in Queensland. 'We've just got to see what their view is first because if you understand their view, then you understand what you need to do to move forward. 'All those traditions that Pacific Island teams have is alluring to players, so we've got to provide a similar type of environment around what is an Aussie and who do we represent and what do we celebrate.' West Coast Eagles mid-season draftee Tom McCarthy joins list of elite AFL ball winners in first season

West Coast's top mid-season draftee Tom McCarthy has continued his meteoric rise, joining an elite AFL group. The mature-aged defender has been a shining light since his arrival at the Eagles' nest in May. And just eight games into what the club will be hoping is a long and decorated career, the 25-year-old has joined an elite list of ball winners. McCarthy is inside the top 10 for most disposals over the first eight games of an AFL career, sitting equal seventh on 194 alongside Greater Western Sydney captain Toby Greene. He is also just six disposals off Carlton star Sam Walsh and seven behind what Brownlow Medal favourite Nick Daicos produced through his first eight appearances. Former Fremantle and Gold Coast midfielder Michael Barlow heads the impressive list, having collected 220 disposals. Most of McCarthy's numbers - 24 disposals, five marks and an elite 510 metres gained per game - even came before his first shift in midfield, the eight-gamer showing he will be able to add a further string to his bow that already includes being one of the club's best kicks. 'I feel like I wasn't ready for it at the start, but getting out there ... I definitely feel ready now and ready to move forward with (the midfield move),' McCarthy said on Tuesday. 'It's a massive jump and it's probably the strength bit for me, I need to get a bit stronger. 'When you try and body up a few of the AFL mids, it's a bit different, you have to go about your craft a bit differently, but it's a great challenge.' McCarthy was taught a lesson in his first quarter in midfield against the Crows, torched by star Jordan Dawson. However, the rising star was quick to learn and ended the match as one of the best on with a game-high 29 disposals to go with two clearances as the Eagles pushed the league leaders to within nine points of a historic upset. With co-captain Liam Duggan now missing the final two clashes of the season, McCarthy could be forced to fill the gap at half-back, but McQualter said his value in the middle may already be too great to lose. 'Yeah, it's one of our options, for sure, but probably after the way Tom played last week, we'd be pretty keen to keep him in the midfield role. He does give us a real point at difference, Tom,' McQualter said on Thursday. 'His run, work rating the way he uses the ball. So that'll be a discussion but it's probably going to be hard to wrestle to midfield coaches to get him out of there at the moment.' Just two years ago, McCarthy was playing amateur football and working nine to five in marketing, and the explosive half-back said he still had more growth in him. 'I think from where I've grown to now is so far from where I was two years ago,' he said. 'But I reckon I've got that much more left to learn, both on the field and off the field, with diet and gym and even my footy, I know I've got lots to work on, so I'm really excited for where I can go. 'We do a bit of meditation and some breathing exercises before the game. A few of us boys get in there and do that, and that's something I never used to do, so it's new to me, but I've started doing that since my debut. 'It really helps me to calm myself down before the game and getting rid of the nerves, and something I'll probably do for the rest of my career.'
