Al Harthy to start 24H of Le Mans from Third on LMGT3 Grid
Al Harthy got things off to an outstanding start in the main qualifying session on Wednesday, June 11, where he emerged quickest of all in the LMGT3 class to comfortably progress the Team WRT entry into the first of two Hyperpole shoot-out sessions on Thursday, June 12.
South African driver van der Linde picked up the baton perfectly and continued in the same vein as Al Harthy, lapping fastest in Hyperpole 1 to ensure the BMW would start a minimum of eighth on the grid for the twice-round-the-clock race — round four of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Rossi got behind the wheel for the decisive Hyperpole 2, straight after the first of the shoot-outs and the Italian's initial true flying lap was ultimately his best of the session as he concluded the run third in LMGT3.

With red flag stoppages impacting qualifying and the first Hyperpole, drivers needed to maintain steely focus and determination to conquer the immense 8.47-mile Circuit de la Sarthe and OQ Group, Sohar International, Omantel, Oman LNG, BMW Oman, Oman Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and Experience Oman supported racer Al Harthy — and the entire team — certainly did that.
Brilliant showing from Team WRT trio confirms Le Mans potential
Opening qualifying on Wednesday produced a sparkling performance from Al Harthy, who was in outstanding form. Initially topping the times on his first proper lap, the Omani was second with just under 10 minutes of the half hour session elapsed and he held fifth midway through when red flags were flown.
Determined to piece together a great lap after the resumption and challenge for the fastest time, he steered the No 46 BMW M4 to a lap of 3m 56.875 seconds which placed him on top by four tenths of a second to smoothly progress to Hyperpole as the fastest of the lead 12 contenders.
In Hyperpole 1 van der Linde posted a time of 3m 55.855 seconds just moments before red flags were shown. After the resumption he improved to 3m 54.530 seconds, topping LMGT3 and on his final lap he shaved another two tenths off to conclude the session quickest with 3m 54.345 seconds.
Rossi climbed into the driving seat for the 15-minute Hyperpole 2 and his first competitive lap was a time of 3m 54.966 seconds, placing him third. Ultimately this was the Italian's best of the session as he secured a terrific third on the grid for, arguably, the biggest event in four-wheeled motorsport.
There is a day away from track action now at the Circuit de la Sarthe ahead of the start of this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans on Saturday, June 14. Warm-up will take place at 12:00 local time before the race itself starts at 16:00.

Austria: Ducati's Marc Marquez conquered his Austrian Grand Prix jinx in style by charging from fourth on the grid to claim victory in Saturday's sprint race at the Red Bull Ring, with his brother and closest championship contender Alex finishing second. The Ducati rider executed a flawless performance to secure his first-ever race win in Austria, extending his remarkable sprint dominance with a 12th victory in 13 rounds this season. The victory moves Marc Marquez 123 points clear of Gresini Racing's Alex Marquez at the top of the championship and 180 above Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia, who was forced to retire due to problems with his bike. "I decided to wait a bit and when the tyres start to drop is when I feel better and I started to push." He dedicated the victory to Pau Alsina , a 17-year-old JuniorGP Spanish rider who died due to injuries sustained in a training accident last month. "Super special sprint victory because I want to say that it's for Pau Alsina. We miss him," he added, while pointing to Alsina's number 26 on the back of his helmet. "I don't know what will happen tomorrow but the race is for him." BAGNAIA WHEELSPIN Bezzecchi had claimed his first pole with Aprilia earlier on Saturday but was beaten to turn one by Alex and Marc as the Marquez brothers dropped the Italian down to third, while a wheelspin for Bagnaia dropped him 11 places to 14th. Bezzecchi soon found himself going backwards as Acosta made a smooth overtake on the inside to move up to third while Alex set the early pace with the fastest lap. But Acosta was soon losing ground to the Marquez brothers who have been in another league this season, especially in the sprints. Bagnaia seemed to be struggling with his bike and the Ducati rider dropped to the back of the field before retiring from the race, his face like thunder inside the pit lane. His teammate Marc, however, pounced with five laps to go to take the lead from his brother on turn three and immediately began extending his advantage, going more than half a second clear two laps later. There was no catching Marc as he claimed his 20th victory in sprints and races this season but Alex was happy to finish second again after missing out on the podium in the last two rounds. "I'm super happy, I had a quite clear target," Alex said. "When I saw Marc behind and I knew that he was faster than me I made a mistake, so there's nothing more to do but at the end we were there. Sabalenka, Gauff crash out in Cincinnati as Alcaraz survives to reach semis
CINCINNATI: World number one Aryna Sabalenka and second-ranked Coco Gauff were sent crashing out of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Friday as Carlos Alcaraz fought off a fierce challenge from Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-finals. Top seed and defending champion Sabalenka had no answer for Elena Rybakina, falling to the 2022 Wimbledon champion 6-1, 6-4. Reigning French Open champion Gauff had 16 double faults in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 exit at the hands of seventh-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini. Spain's second-ranked Alcaraz had his difficulties, but he broke Rublev in the final game of a tense duel to emerge a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 winner and will face third-seeded Alexander Zverev, who brought fifth-seeded Toronto champion Ben Shelton's run to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Zverev earned a 4-1 lead in the second set as Shelton angrily tossed his racquet on the changeover and the 2021 champion polished off the win on a second match point. He now has 24 hours to try to get fit. "I'm not feeling too great now, but I have a day to get fresh", Zverev said. "I hope to be at 100%. "I'm not sure what happened. Qualifier Atmane stuns Rune to set up Sinner semis
CINCINNATI: French qualifier Terence Atmane toppled another top-10 player in Holger Rune on Thursday to line up a semifinal showdown with world number one Jannik Sinner at the Cincinnati Open. Atmane followed up his victory over fourth-ranked Taylor Fritz with a 6-2, 6-3 win over ninth-ranked Rune. The 23-year-old will now face the ultimate test against defending champion Sinner, who said he "felt great" as he thrashed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0, 6-2. "I don't think any words can describe how I feel right now," the 136th-ranked Atmane said after blasting 22 winners past Rune, 14 of them off his powerful lefty forehand. "It's pretty insane to be honest," added Atmane, who will move inside the top 100 in the rankings for the first time. "I cannot believe it. Being here in the semifinals of a Masters 1000, breaking into the top 100. It means a lot to me." France's Varvara Gracheva rallied to beat Germany's Ella Seidel 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 in an error-strewn battle of qualifiers. "I made her play her best game," Gracheva said. "She was so hot at the end of the first set that I could barely see a ball. "I had to go back to basics, I had so many mistakes. I was doubting myself but I stuck with it."
