The sixteenth president of the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon and Cyprus, has been elected as a new fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the category of Educational and Academic Leadership. This latest milestone recognizes Dr. Khuri's exceptional contributions to the advancement of education, as well as his steadfast leadership in the academic sphere during a decade plagued by overlapping crises, placing him among a select group of global leaders.As an honorary society and an independent research center, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences convenes exceptional global leaders renowned for their excellence that span across disciplines, professions and perspectives. All of its members have impacted the lives of people and societies, leaving their mark in every field of human endeavor.The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1780 by, among others, John Adams, the second President and first Vice President of the United States; American political and intellectual leader James Bowdoin; and American statesman John Hancock. Its first elected class included U.S. Founding Father Benjamin Franklin and first U.S. President George Washington.In response to the news, Dr. Khuri remarked, 'I am particularly proud to have been nominated by Board Chair Emeritus Philip S. Khoury for work we have all done together over the last decade at AUB.' He added, 'Being selected among a constellation of global leaders and pioneers is truly humbling. And my mother will no doubt be thrilled that I was elected in the same class as Gloria Steinem, one of her heroes and one of feminism's greatest champions.'Chairman of the American University of Beirut (AUB) Board of Trustees Abdo G. Kadifa, commented on the announcement, stating, 'Since assuming office in 2015, Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri has been a transformative leader. Under his guidance, AUB has navigated significant challenges, including economic crises, the Beirut explosion on August 4, 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic, while achieving remarkable milestones such as the reintroduction of academic tenure, the establishment of AUB Online, and the launch of AUB Mediterraneo, the university's first twin campus outside Lebanon. Empower signs a contract to design its new District Cooling Plant in Dubai Science Park

Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation PJSC (Empower), the world's largest district cooling services provider, has signed a contract to design a new district cooling plant at Dubai Science Park. The new plant will have a total production capacity of 47,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT) and will serve nearly 80 mixed-use buildings in the area. The project is part of Empower's expansion strategy to meet the rising demand for energy-efficient district cooling services in key areas of Dubai. The construction is scheduled to begin by the end of the first quarter of Science Park is the Middle East's first free zone, dedicated to the science sector, hosting hundreds of companies and more than 3,000 specialised professionals. It functions as a science community and an interactive hub for entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and multinational corporations engaged in scientific research. The park is also a key destination for fostering business growth within a flexible environment that supports research, creativity, and stated that the Dubai Science Park district cooling plant will be built and operated incorporating advanced and award-winning innovative technologies developed by the company. These include the thermal energy storage (TES) systems that significantly reduce peak load pressure on the state power grid, as well as treated sewage effluent (TSE) technology that helps reduce freshwater usage in district cooling operations and conserve natural resources. The plant will also leverage artificial intelligence applications and the latest technological solutions to ensure maximum efficiency and currently holds more than 80% share of Dubai's district cooling market and is committed to modernizing its facilities and developing the district cooling infrastructure to meet rising demand from individuals, institutions, and corporate entities. 'Empower is advancing its ambitious expansion plans by building new plants equipped with the latest technologies, under a strategic framework that places sustainability at the core of its operations and emphasises innovation and continuous development. This approach is guided by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at reducing electricity and water consumption and positioning Dubai as a global hub for the green economy and the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050,' said H.E. Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Shafar stated that the new district cooling plant at Dubai Science Park underscores Empower's commitment to delivering world-class, sustainable cooling services to key communities in Dubai. With a total production capacity of 47,000 RT upon completion, the project will provide reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly services to the area's diverse residential, commercial, and research facilities. 'Empower currently operates 88 district cooling plants across Dubai. This new facility is a significant addition to our capacity and a strategic step that expands the reach of efficient cooling services. It also highlights our vital role in supporting Dubai's environmental and developmental objectives, while solidifying our position as the world's largest district cooling services provider,' he concluded.

WCM-Q study highlights potential of flavonoid-induced ferroptosis in treating cancer

Researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) have explored preclinical evidence on the therapeutic potential of flavonoids that induce ferroptosis in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in a new article published in the Journal of Advanced Research (ScienceDirect), a leading applied/natural sciences cancers account for a quarter of all cancer cases and are the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In addition, the incidence of early-onset GI cancer in individuals under 50 has been rising at an alarming rate in recent advances in cancer treatment, factors like rapid globalization, changes in the distribution and prevalence of key risk factors, and demographic trends contribute to epidemiological disparities and variations in the incidence and mortality of GI cancers worldwide. Of the GI cancers, colorectal cancer is considered the most predominant, followed by cancers of the stomach, liver, esophagus, and pancreas. While most GI cancers occur sporadically, only 10 percent are hereditary. Apart from the influence of genetic and environmental factors, lifestyle and dietary habits, and multi-causal combinations like obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption, are all common risk factors associated with GI treatments for GI cancers include multidisciplinary strategies based on surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and other therapeutic modalities. However, the efficacy of therapeutics is limited by the malignant characteristics of cancer cells, particularly their ability to resist treatment, metastasize, and promote evidence suggests that ferroptosis, a novel iron-dependent form of cell death, may be a promising target for cancer therapy. Ferroptosis is a unique, regulated form of programmed cell death driven by the overaccumulation of lipid peroxides. Numerous preclinical studies have increasingly demonstrated the effectiveness of inducing ferroptosis using natural compounds such as flavonoids as an alternative strategy in cancer article was authored by Ms. Ruqaia Shoheeduzzaman, a graduate of the WCM-Q National Internship Program (June 2024), with co-corresponding authors from WCM-Q: Dr. Dietrich Büsselberg, professor of physiology and biophysics; Dr. Samson Mathews Samuel, research associate in physiology and biophysics; and Ms. Elizabeth Varghese, a senior research specialist.'The review highlights recent studies on the anticancer potential of flavonoids, mediated through ferroptosis, in gastrointestinal cancers, including data derived from in vitro cell culture and in vivo animal model tumor systems. It hypothesizes that flavonoid-mediated ferroptosis presents a strategic intervention in cancer therapy, serving as both anticancer agents and sensitizers to enhance the efficacy of current treatments,' said Dr. Bü article also suggests that the landscape of cancer therapy is continually evolving, and with the development of new, cutting-edge technologies, there is a greater scope to understand and implement natural compounds, such as flavonoids, in cancer therapy. This would facilitate the development of tailored ferroptosis-based therapeutic strategies and help bridge gaps where conventional therapies fall short, thereby further supporting the effective translation of these strategies to clinical use. The study was made possible through funding from the Biomedical Research Program at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar and NPRP-Standard (NPRP-S) 14th Cycle grant NPRP14S-0311-210033 from Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation). The findings herein reflect the work and are solely the responsibility of the authors.
