UP teacher suspended over ‘objectionable' remarks on Kanwar Yatra
The incident came to light after videos went viral — one in which the teacher Om Prakash, who is in his 50s, purportedly admits to his 'mistake', and another showing the student levelling allegations against him.
Suktanpur's Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Upendra Gupta, said the teacher has been suspended prima facie and an inquiry has been initiated against him. He added that in the viral video, students can be heard alleging that the teacher made 'objectionable' remarks.
Om Prakash, a Dalit, was posted as an assistant teacher at the Composite School in Samratpur, Sultanpur.
According to a teacher, the alleged incident took place on Tuesday when a group of people reached the school and staged a protest against the teacher. The village pradhan, Rajesh Tiwar, also reached the spot and tried to pacify the students.
'People told me that a student informed them that on July 17, when she sought permission from Om Prakash to meet a group of Kanwariyas — which included some of her relatives — he not only denied her request but also allegedly made objectionable remarks about those participating in the Kanwar Yatra,' said pradhan Tiwari.
He added that a few minutes later, teacher Om Prakash came out of the school building and purportedly admitted to his mistake in front of the crowd.

Villagers vandalise toll plaza after staff tie army jawan to pole, assault him
: Nearly two days after a 26-year-old army jawan was tied to a pole, kicked, punched and attacked with sticks by a group of toll plaza employees, angry villagers vandalised the same Bhuni toll plaza on the Meerut-Karnal highway on Monday afternoon and confronted the staff there. The attack on the jawan took place after he requested the toll plaza staff for a quick passage so that he could catch a flight in order to rejoin duty in Srinagar. Six people have been arrested in connection with the attack on the jawan, according to the police. Meerut superintendent of police (Rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said, 'Enraged by yesterday's attack on (an) armyman, a group of villagers staged a protest at the toll plaza. The situation has been brought under control. Regular movement of traffic continues.' SSP Vipin Tanda said, 'Last night, a video was received in which some people were beating up a person. When the police investigated, it was found that the complainant is a jawan and he had an argument with the toll workers over something. The toll workers beat him up. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, a case has been registered. On the basis of the video, six people have been arrested.' The soldier, Kapil Singh of the Rajput Regiment posted in Srinagar, was returning from short leave that he had taken during the Kanwar Yatra when the attack occurred late Saturday night at Bhuni toll plaza. According to a complaint filed by Kapil's father, the incident took place under the Saroorpur police station limits. A video of the assault shows 8-10 men surrounding Kapil and brutally assaulting him. Kapil, a resident of Gotka village, had left home around 8pm on Saturday with his brother Devendra to reach Delhi for a 5am flight. Upon encountering a long queue at the toll plaza, Kapil showed his Army ID and requested quick passage, stating that he was a local resident and needed to catch his flight to join duty. Despite this, the staff allegedly refused and began arguing. Soon afterwards, Bittu (32), the toll plaza's security in-charge and resident of Chhur village in Sardhana, intervened and allegedly started manhandling Kapil. The soldier suffered injuries to his nose. When he stepped out of his car, a group of toll workers tied him to a pole and beat him. His brother Devendra, who tried to save him, was also assaulted. The injured Kapil called his family, after which 10-15 villagers rushed to the spot. They staged a protest at the toll plaza, demanding the immediate removal of the staff who assaulted the army jawan. The uproar continued until around 9:30 pm. Police officials reached the scene and managed to pacify the crowd.

Internal quota: Options being worked out to bring about consensus
Monday evening saw hectic parleys among Ministers and officials belonging to Scheduled Castes to arrive at a consensus on the internal reservation on the eve of the special Cabinet meeting, even as the Dalit left (Madigas) and the Dalit right (Holeyas) continued to exert pressure on the government. While the Dalit left groups continued with their protest demanding the implementation of the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission report, the Dalit right groups converged in Bengaluru to bring pressure to either drop the recommendations or modify it. Both held protests at Freedom Park here on Monday. Meanwhile, Ministers from the SC community met at the residence of Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Monday evening. The special Cabinet meeting scheduled for Saturday was postponed to Tuesday over a lack of consensus. The commission has recommended 1% to Category A for microscopic communities, 6% to Category B for Dalit left, 5% to Category C for Dalit right, 4% to Category D for touchable communities of Bhovis, Lambanis, Korchas, and Kormas and 1% to Category E comprising AD, AK, and AA. Multiple sources said that several retired officials from both Dalit left and right groups have been trying to bring about a formula acceptable to both groups. Two options While one formula is to drop 1% given to AD, AA, and AK in Category E and increase the percentage to Dalit right to 6%, and add the three communities to the Dalit right group or split them between the Dalit right and the Dalit left. The other formula is to increase the reservation percentage of Dalit right to 7% and bring all Dalit right communities that are in Category A, B, and E together. The Dalit right groups have been pointing at 'scattering' of their allied castes in three categories, thus reducing their actual numbers and also reservation percentage. Commission sources said that some vulnerable castes had been moved to Category 1 given their backwardness and inability to compete with Category C. The logic was that unequal castes cannot compete. Sources in Dalit right groups (including Chalavadi Mahasabha) said they have told Ministers that the report can be accepted only with revision in categorisation and reservation matrix. Sources in the Federation for Social Justice for Scheduled Castes, representing microscopic communities and the Dalit left, said that though Mr. Das's recommendations were scientific and backed by data, it was open for small revision. 'We are tired of fighting for three decades and we want an end to the internal reservation conflict,' said a source. Meanwhile, the representatives of Federation of Dalit Sangharsha Samitis, who met the Chief Minister on Monday, have also urged the State government to accept the report by revising certain aspects of the recommendations. In a memorandum, they said that efforts should be made to keep the unity among the 101 SCs and ensure fairness. Quantum of quota Ahimsa, a group representing minorities, backward classes and general category employees of the government, on Monday appealed to the government not to breach the 50% reservation mark as per the direction of the Supreme Court. Incidentally, the reservation for SCs and STs was increased from 15% to 17% and 3% to 7%, respectively, based on recommendations by Mr. Das, who headed another commission on increasing reservation. This took the total reservation matrix which was at 49% to 56%. Other Backward Classes have a reservation of 32%.

INDIA bloc decides to field VP candidate, weighs DMK-backed scientist Mylswamy Annadurai among options
New Delhi: Leaders of many INDIA bloc parties held an online meeting on Monday evening and decided in principle to field an Opposition vice-presidential candidate . While some probable names - including DMK-floated Mylswamy Annadurai , a space scientist from Tamil Nadu who had worked with ISRO - were discussed, the leaders decided to hold more talks before finalising the Opposition candidate, perhaps by Tuesday. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was authorised by the meeting to reach out to leaders such as Mamata Banerjee, Tejashwi Yadav and others. The bloc leaders may meet on Tuesday afternoon to finalise the name. Mylswamy's name was circulated by some DMK members at the suggestion of their leader MK Stalin. DMK, some leaders say, would prefer a Tamil candidate in order to deal with BJP-AIADMK bid to play on the Tamil identity of NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan. DMK MP Tiruchi Siva's name was also floated by some sections. Trinamool leadership is reportedly keen on having a non-politician as Opposition candidate as a way of navigating through the fault lines within the Opposition camps. With DMK leadership on board, there were also suggestions of fielding a candidate from Andhra Pradesh or Maharashtra, where BJP has allies. Some argue that Opposition should make the contest against Radhakrishnan a "fight against his RSS background ". Since Radhakrishnan is currently Maharashtra governor , a fact that weighs in the mind of some INDIA bloc leaders, some Opposition circles circulated the name of a former Dalit MP, but it didn't receive much traction.
