Mets Make Major Organizational Move After Two Straight Losses

Mets Make Major Organizational Move After Two Straight Losses

Yahoo06-05-2025

After dropping back-to-back games against the St. Louis Cardinals, the New York Mets have fallen to 22-13 on the season. Despite losing four of their last five games, the Mets remain in first place in a loaded National League East division. But their lead has been reduced to a mere 2.5 games over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies.
Injuries may be taking their toll on New York, as it has lost multiple starting pitchers to injuries this season. As a result, the Mets seemingly have their eye on the organizational pitching depth. This was evidenced by a decision they reportedly made on Monday.

Per multiple reports, the Mets have promoted highly-touted pitching prospect Nolan McLean to Triple-A. Joe DeMayo of SNY was among those who reported the news.

'The Mets are promoting RHP Nolan McLean to Triple-A Syracuse," he wrote on X. "McLean posted a 1.37 ERA in 26.1 innings across 5 starts for Double-A Binghamton. He ranked as the No. 3 prospect in the Mets system in my pre-season top 30 for @SNYtv."
So far this season, the 23-year-old has posted a 1.37 ERA for Triple-A Syracuse. Additionally, in his 26.1 innings of work, he has struck out 30 batters and walked just 12. His 1.22 WHIP and .213 average to opposing hitters also stick out as excellent and were likely a big reason for his promotion.
The 2023 third-round pick has focused on pitching after being a two-way player out of the draft. That decision seems to have paid huge dividends for him as he is now just one promotion away from reaching the show.

Phillies' Rob Thomson Optimistic Amid Losing Streak, 'Just Gotta Keep Grinding'

Phillies' Rob Thomson Optimistic Amid Losing Streak, 'Just Gotta Keep Grinding' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are in the middle of a losing streak following their defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After May got off to a great start, the Phillies dropped the final three games of the month. Into June, the Phillies have won just one game in their last five. Advertisement On Phillies Postgame Live from NBC Sports Philadelphia, after the loss to the Pirates, Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed optimism amid the team's current losing streak. "Just gotta keep grinding," Thomson said. "In a little bit of a funk right now, but gotta keep grinding through it." Following the loss to the Pirates, the Phillies sit at 37-26, in second place in the National League East, and 2.5 games behind the New York Mets. The Phillies' offense has scored 295 runs, 11 more than the Mets, while their pitching has allowed 278 runs, 67 more than the Mets. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) looks on from the dugout against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images What was supposed to be a strong suit for the Phillies has turned into the reason for their struggles. Jesus Luzardo's past two starts, allowing 20 earned runs combined, have put the Phillies back significantly. The bullpen has blown a few games, and let games get out of hand often this year. Advertisement When the pitching is humming, the defense will often crumble, or the offense will struggle to knock in baserunners. It's been a season where the Phillies haven't put together a strong winning streak against teams that aren't below .500. Against teams that are above .500, the Phillies are 16-18, losing record. The losing streak and recent slide have been tough for the Phillies. But Thomson sees a path forward. With two more games against the Pirates and a series against the Mets near the end of June on the horizon, the Phillies still have plenty of time to turn things around. Thomson believes in the team and thinks that despite the funk, the team can get through it and come out strong on the other side. One of those beneficiaries was Griffin Canning, coming off a rough season with the Angels, who arrived on a one-year contract worth $4.25 million. Canning was asked on Sunday what it said about the organization that the big names were bypassed for pieces such as himself and Clay Holmes. 'The organization as a whole is confident in the information they can give guys and help get them right.' Sean Manaea and Luis Severino were two such success stories last season for the Mets. Canning, 29, pitched to a 5.19 ERA last season with the Angels. Advertisement This year he was encouraged by the Mets pitching coaches to rely on his slider and changeup, and has followed that advice to success. 'I think I just got away from who I am as a pitcher a little bit,' Canning said. 'My whole life I have been a guy who pitches backwards, so hearing that [trusting the slider and changeup] just helped reinforce who I am and gave me confidence again that this should be my game plan, this is what gives me success.' 'New York is such a big city and everyone has got their own thing going on, and they don't really care who is walking around,' Canning said. 'But it's cool. I love living there and I love the fans, playing in front of them has been pretty fun.' The Mets have selected reliever Justin Garza to the major league roster and optioned lefty Brandon Waddell to Triple-A Syracuse. Mets React to Pete Alonso News on Monday

Mets React to Pete Alonso News on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Entering the week, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was riding a hot stretch at the plate. Over seven games against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies, he slashed 12-for-30 (.400) with 15 RBIs, five home runs and a 1.452 OPS. Advertisement That torrid pace, spread across a mix of night games under the bright lights of Dodger Stadium and the thin air of Coors Field, was the catalyst for his NL Player of the Week honor. On Monday, the Mets took to Instagram to congratulate Alonso on the award, saying, "Congrats to Pete Alonso on being named the NL Player of the Week! 🐻‍❄️🔥" Fans online were quick to show their love for Alonso. "Best signing in the offseason by any team," said one user. "Pete is a beast!! Please finish your career as a Met Pete!" another fan replied. "We need Pete on Repeat!! Please don't let him go elsewhere after this season.🙏," commented one other user. Advertisement "EXTEND HIM," another fan emphatically responded. "MVPete," one other user followed up with. "Steve and Dave, please do the right thing this off-season. Let's go Mets," another commenter replied. New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso (20).Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images On June 3 against the Dodgers, Alonso ripped an RBI double off Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4, igniting a late rally in a tightly contested matchup. The following day, he followed up with a two-run homer in the first and a three-run shot in the eighth, accounting for all five of his RBIs in a 6-1 victory. Then, on Sunday vs the Rockies, Alonso launched a two-run homer, not only extending his hot streak but tying him with David Wright in second place on the Mets' all-time home run list.
