‘India working to build its own space station': PM Modi on Independence Day
He referred to astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's recent 18-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), noting, 'Shubhanshu Shukla is back from a successful space mission and will soon return to India.' Shukla joined the Axiom-4 private mission, launching from Florida on June 25 and docking at the ISS a day later. With three crewmates – Peggy Whitson (US), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland) and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) – he carried out over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 18-day stay.
He said India is striving for self-reliance in the space sector and is preparing to launch Gaganyaan, the country's flagship human spaceflight programme. 'We will make our own space station,' he stated.
The prime minister added that recent reforms have led to the emergence of over 300 start-ups in the space sector.
'Thousands of youth are working on it. This is the power of our youth... This is the confidence we have in our youth,' PM Modi added
Modi highlights push for 'self-reliance'
Stressing on the importance of self-reliance, PM Modi said, 'Very important to achieve self-reliance in critical minerals, we are moving ahead in this area in high speed.' He added, 'We have decided to make India self-reliant in energy; taking several initiatives in solar, hydrogen, nuclear sectors.'
Modi also stated, 'We are bringing more reforms in nuclear energy sector, opened it for private participation,' and highlighted the role of self-reliance in national achievements, saying, 'Had we not been self-reliant, would India have been able to carry out Operation Sindoor so successfully?'

'India's independence movement was a collective battle, cutting across caste, creed, language, and religion. In contrast, the RSS distanced itself from the movement and openly opposed its ideological foundations. Instead of inclusive Indian nationalism, it promoted a majoritarian Hindutva vision,' added Vijayan. Citing history, Vijayan further pointed out that when the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, the RSS mouthpiece Organizer editorialised that the Manusmriti should have been the guiding text instead of the Constitution. Similarly, the Hindu Mahasabha under Savarkar had even boycotted the celebrations of August 15, 1947. 'Those who turned their backs on the freedom struggle are now attempting to insert themselves into its history, while sidelining real martyrs, such as those of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising or the victims of the Wagon Tragedy. Those who call for commemorating Partition horrors on August 14 have little moral standing to lecture the nation on Independence Day,' wrote Vijayan. Vijayan ends his piece by stating that any attempt to replace the legacy of humanism and unity with sectarian hatred must be resisted collectively.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to visit India on Monday
Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi is set to visit India on August 18 (Monday) for the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question, Beijing confirmed on Saturday. "From August 18 to 20, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs and China's Special Representative on the China-India boundary question Wang Yi will visit India and hold the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question at the invitation of the Indian side," the Chinese Ministry for Foreign Affairs said in a statement. The visit is scheduled to take place shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled to take place at Tianjin, from August 31 to September 1. The Chinese side also welcomed PM Modi's participation in the SCO Summit. At a briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness." According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, leaders of over 20 countries, including all member states of the SCO and heads of 10 international organisations, will attend relevant events of the summit, which, Jiakun said, will be the "largest summit in scale since the establishment of the SCO." This will be PM Modi's first visit to China since the Galwan clash in 2020, which severely strained bilateral ties. The breakthrough in bilateral talks, first after the Galwan Valley face-off between the soldiers of the two countries at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in June 2020, was made possible after India and China reached an agreement on patrolling along the nearly 3500-km LAC to end the four-year-long border confrontation. In July, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited China to attend the Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Tianjin. He also held discussions with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the meeting. He also called on Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with his fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Earlier in June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited China to attend the SCO Defence Ministers Meeting. India had refused to endorse the joint declaration at the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting, citing the exclusion of concerns around terrorism as a key reason. India stated that it wanted concerns about terrorism reflected in the document, which was not acceptable to one particular country; therefore, the statement was not adopted. During his visit, Singh met his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Don Jun, and the two leaders had a "constructive and forward-looking exchange of views" on issues related to bilateral ties. In June, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval also visited China to attend the 20th Meeting of the SCO Security Council Secretaries. In his intervention at the meeting, he highlighted the need to shun double standards in the fight against terrorism and take decisive actions against UN-proscribed terrorists and entities like LeT, JeM and their proxies and dismantle their terror eco-systems.

BJP Plans Mega Show Of Strength Ahead Of Vice Presidential Election
New Delhi: The BJP is planning a mega huddle of its top leaders and closest allies next week, in a major show of strength before the upcoming Vice-Presidential election. All MPs of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have also been called for a Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday as the Parliament resumes for the second phase of the ongoing Monsoon session. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely address the MPs in the Parliament auditorium, sources said. While this second meeting of NDA MPs this Monsoon session appears to be routine, it assumes significance in the wake of the September 9 poll to elect the successor of Jagdeep Dhankhar. The former Vice President had resigned last month, citing his health, though his differences with the party had later emerged as a key indicator of his sudden decision. Besides the meeting of MPs, a mega huddle of top NDA leaders on the nomination day is expected to deliver a message of unity. This meeting will have all the Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Deputy Chief Ministers in the NDA fold in attendance. Different sets of nomination papers will be prepared, in which the BJP's allies will also be made proposers and supporters. The BJP has also called a meeting of its Parliamentary Board, its highest decision-making body for the legislature, at the party's headquarters on Sunday evening, during which it is expected to decide on its nominee for the Vice-Presidential election. It will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by senior BJP leaders, including party chief JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. PM Modi and Mr Nadda have already been authorised to pick the NDA's candidate at a meeting on August 7. Since then, a series of meetings have been held to discuss the names of the potential candidates. Top sources within the BJP have indicated that the next Vice President will be from the ruling party; someone who is strongly associated with the ideology of the party and RSS - unlike in the case of Mr Dhankhar, who was chosen only to appeal to the Jat voters. Besides, it must also give a regional and social message. The NDA has also started working on a strategy to get maximum votes in the favour of its candidate. A three-day workshop is being organised in the Parliament House to train the MPs on how to vote for the Vice-Presidential election. The government's strategists will also contact the opposition and try to build a consensus, though this is just a formality since the opposition has made it clear that it will field its own candidate. The Vice-Presidential election offers the first big opportunity to test the ruling alliance's strength in its third term, with the opposition trying to corner the government on all major issues. The BJP now treads cautious waters as its majority now heavily depends on key allies Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal United (JDU), while the Opposition appears united over the voter list row and other key issues. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which had earlier backed them in such elections, is unlikely to extend support after losing power to the BJP in Odisha.
