‘Show stopper': Huge 7m-tall Boonji Spaceman unveiled at Perth's Stirling Gardens

West Australian22-05-2025
The long-awaited Boonji Spaceman was officially unveiled out the front of the Perth council house this morning, where it will remain for the next year.
The 'show stopper' Spaceman was unveiled to the tune of Around the world by Daft Punk at it's temporary home at Perth's Stirling gardens.
The 7m-tall blue spaceman, titled Lightning, is covered in graffitied words that former Lord mayor Basil Zempilas said reflected the city.
'Words like ambitious, friendly, beautiful, City of light, are represented.' he said.
Mr Zempilas said that the spaceman was 'hugely impressive' and will be a drawing point for people in Perth.
'People are going to come and have their photos, Instagram this, talk about Perth and push Perth on their own channels,' he said.
City of Perth Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said that the Spaceman pays homage to the Perth City of Light origin story.
'Perth became known as the City of Light following American astronaut John Glenn's historic triple orbit of Earth in 1962, during which Perth residents and businesses left on their lights, shone torches to the sky and lit lanterns to make the city visible in space,' he said.
'BOONJI Spaceman is a tribute to our unique story and will no doubt become another must-see piece in the City of Light,' Cr Reynolds said.
Renowned contemporary artist Brendan Murphy, who's based in the United States, donated the sculpture to the city.
'Art is an essential, it's not a luxury its something that brings us together,' he said.
'It's not something that I normally do, I'm not in the business of giving my art away.
'However when Basil and I met I felt his passion for the city and the people of the city.
'It's one of the best things I've done in a long time.'
Perth has now joined six other cities across the globe to own a personalised BOONJI sculpture with the others installed in New York, London, Washington D.C., Riyadh, Mallorca and Oslo.
Although the artwork was donated, The City of Perth budgeted $250,000 for the transportation and installation of the Spaceman.
The transportation process of the 1,365 kg carbon fibre and steel giant took 12 months and involved engineers to ensure a safe trip from Miami.
Despite local outrage and on-going petitions, the installation still went ahead.
Followers of the social media profile, 'savethekebab' shared their frustration and disappointment online.
'$250k that could have supported a local artist to create something more relevant that is unique to us,' one follower said.
The sculpture will live where the sculpture Ore Obelisk once stood, but was uninstalled in 2021 due to safety reasons. It is currently in city storage.
'It's standing where Ore Obelisk stood for 50 years - a work that actually meant something to this city.' another follower said.
Mr Reynolds said that a notice of motion was put forward to the city to reassess what to do with the art pieces currently in storage.
Mr Murphy will be displaying his other artworks at his 'blockbuster' Australian solo exhibition at the end of May at Gullotti Galleries in Cottesloe.
The BOONJI Spaceman will stay at Stirling Gardens for 12 months and is anticipated to find its forever home in another location in the city, which is yet to be confirmed.

Near-capacity crowd expected at Sydney's Allianz Stadium as Wrexham's fairytale rise continues and Hollywood backing draw huge interest

Welsh football club Wrexham is set to play in front of a near-capacity crowd in Sydney on Tuesday night as the team continues its Australian tour, with the highly anticipated friendly against Sydney FC expected to attract around 38,000 fans. The attendance at Allianz Stadium is shaping up to rival that of the British and Irish Lions' recent clash with the NSW Waratahs, which drew approximately 40,000 spectators earlier this month. Wrexham, still riding a wave of global interest thanks to its dramatic rise through the English football leagues and the high-profile ownership of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has seen its popularity soar beyond the pitch. Wrexham club's manager, Phil Parkinson, said the squad was still coming to terms with the scale of their journey. 'Where the club's come from, there've been tough periods over the last 20 years. To imagine that we'd be touring Australia and having all these great experiences, sometimes you've got to pinch yourself,' he said during a media appearance on Monday. The team held a training session at Sydney Olympic Park before visiting Taronga Zoo. Wrexham has enjoyed three successive promotions and now sits within striking distance of the English Premier League, a remarkable turnaround for a club that was once struggling in non-league football. New signing Ryan Hardie has joined the squad after spells at Rangers and Plymouth Argyle. His arrival in North Wales came with a touch of Hollywood sparkle. 'They're involved in this club as much as anyone,' Hardie said, referring to the messages of support he received from Deadpool star Reynolds and fellow Hollywood A-lister McElhenney after his signing was announced. Wrexham's revival, chronicled in the Disney+ docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, has turned the team into an unlikely global phenomenon and drawn new audiences to lower-tier English football. The club's most recent appearance in Australia saw them cruise to a 3-0 victory over Melbourne Victory on Friday night, with Reynolds and McElhenney watching the match remotely. 'I'm sure they'll be watching this one in Sydney as well,' Parkinson added. In a cross-sport exchange, Bulldogs NRL coach Cameron Ciraldo also paid a visit to Wrexham's training session in Homebush, exchanging ideas with Parkinson on coaching and team culture. 'It was interesting to speak to Cam about how he's created his team and is coaching his team,' Parkinson said. 'There's a lot of similarities in terms of mentality and team building, getting your squad right, the culture right. So, much of that is transferable between the two sports.'

Wrexham vs Melbourne Victory: The journey of an unlikely Hollywood story taking to the field in Melbourne

More than half of the club's revenues – $55 million last year – now come from markets other than the UK. And that's why Wrexham AFC are on a pre-season tour of Australia, playing three games against A-League teams. The Red Dragons' meteoric rise under the ownership of Reynolds and Mac has been charted in hit series Welcome to Wrexham, sparking an unlikely following in Australia. Mark Glaubitz and Kylie Welbourne, from Traralgon, were among those at Marvel Stadium on Friday evening for the unusual match, brought about by a unique mix of pop culture, skillful filmmaking, and Wrexham's unprecedented recent on-field success. Once an amateur team in the fifth tier of English soccer, the club has won a record-breaking three straight promotions, taking them to the EFL Championship – the level below the elite Premier League. 'It has just been a wild ride for them,' says Glaubitz, 'and we've been happy to watch them do it.' Welbourne said the stories of regular people spotlighted in Welcome to Wrexham helped her develop an attachment to the club on the other side of the world. 'We got hooked,' she says. 'It's not about Rob [Mac] and Ryan [Reynolds]; it's about the whole town of Wrexham and Wales itself.' Glaubitz adds: 'It has just made celebrities out of normal, everyday people.' The recent proliferation of fly-on-the-wall documentaries via streaming services has led to a boon in popularity for entire sports, such as Formula 1. But Wrexham's rise in both popularity and performance – in a sport dominated by big, legacy clubs with massive budgets – has been particularly unlikely. And Welbourne and Glaubiz reckon remaining in the Championship may be the greatest challenge yet. Pre-season tours to Australia are typically carried out by teams at the very top of the game – Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Manchester United and LA Galaxy (in its David Beckham era) – have all visited. The games mean little, and the big-name stars often play little more than cameos, if they appear at all. The real value of the exercise is in marketing the brand. Though the club's rise has been phenomenal, Brand Wrexham is much more than the team. As the series has made clear, it's about a club as a focal point of a town, and a town defined by struggle, resilience and a sense of community. Reynolds and Mac sometimes mine that to the brink of ick in the show, but there's little doubt that a resurgent club has been a good thing for Wrexham as a whole. A promotion brings with it extra revenue (mostly from TV broadcast deals, but also from increased attendance at games). But it costs money to get there. As O'Hanlon wrote in May, the club spent more than three times the National League on wages when they won promotion the first time (£3.5 million versus the £1 million most of their opponents did). The wage bill in the following year rose to almost £6 million. In the season just finished, the club spent almost £11 million on player salaries, and almost £5 million on transfer fees. There's another cost, too: many of the players who were there at the start of this journey are now gone. Of the 31 players currently listed on the club's website, only five pre-date the Mac-Reynold (and coach Phil Parkinson) era. Ollie Palmer is on tour with the team, and was named in Parkinson's starting 11 on Friday night. But former star striker Paul Mullin – once hailed by fans as 'super' and 'f------ dynamite' – has been sent out on loan to Wigan Athletic. Fellow fan favourites Steven Fletcher and Jordan Davies are gone too. 'That's been the hard thing,' Welbourne says,' because you get attached to certain players.' If Wrexham have bought their way to success (and they have), they've done it on the back of their celebrity owners' money. But they are now in the clear: the club announced in its 2024 accounts that it had repaid £15 million in loans to the Mac and Reynolds-controlled RR McReynolds Company LLC. losing the A-League grand final in late May.
