Brookfield aims over 3x jump in India AUM to $100 bn over five years

Hindustan Times22-05-2025

Mumbai, May 22 (PTI) Brookfield Asset Management is aiming to more than triple its assets under management in India to $100 billion over the next five years, a senior official said on May 22.
Connor Teskey, the president of the New York-headquartered global asset manager, said it expects the global AUM to double over the next five years from the present $1 trillion, and the growth in emerging markets like India would be higher.
At present, the AUM in India, where the firm has been investing for over 15 years, is $30 billion in assets across sectors like infrastructure, real estate, renewable power and also private equity.
"It is not unreasonable in our minds to suggest that in that same five-year time frame, we would triple or quadruple our business here. I very much expect our Indian platform will be a $100 billion business in the near term," Teskey said.
Replying to a specific question on when he sees the $100 billion level being attained, Teskey said it will be five years or less.
Teskey hinted that investments in India will not be impacted even if the real GDP growth were to fall to 5.5 per cent, pointing out that that level is also fantastic if we consider the size of the economy.
A higher proportion of the AUM addition will come through merger and acquisition bets, he said, stressing that it will also organically look at building businesses.
India has strengths like a large and growing economy, which is building infrastructure rapidly and a destination for companies working towards creating resilient supply chains, he said, adding that the depth of talent will also help.
Broadly, a bulk of the investments in the country will be in the infrastructure space, which will include investments in both transportation and digital assets, and also in the energy sector where it has been a big player in the renewables space, he said.
Brookfield, which owns the world's largest nuclear facilities supplier, Westinghouse, is also open to investing in the nuclear energy front, Teskey said, adding that some measures on the liability would be of help.
Returns from its investments in India have either been met or exceeded the targets of the pools of capital, which are deployed to make the bet, he noted.
When it comes to valuations, Teskey said Brookfield will look through temporary trends and also short-term volatilities when it comes to India, stressing that it will be disciplined in its approach given the long-term potential it sees in the market.
At present, its AUM comprises $12 billion of assets each under the infrastructure and real estate strategies, $3 billion in renewable power and transmission and $3.6 billion in private equity and Brookfield special investments.
Teskey said the three Ds of decarbonisation, digitalisation and deglobalisation have been the overarching themes, guiding the asset manager's investments worldwide, and are relevant for the India play as well.
He said India will be a major beneficiary of the tariff moves being undertaken by the US and Brookfield's portfolio is largely insulated from the shifts in the trade policies globally.

'Willing to enhance dialogue': China on lifting export curbs on rare earth metals to India

China on Thursday signaled openness to talks with India over its export restrictions on rare earth materials, saying it is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with relevant countries to help maintain stable industrial supply chains read more China on Thursday signaled openness to talks with India over its export restrictions on rare earth materials, saying it is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with relevant countries to help maintain stable industrial supply chains. Beijing's recent curbs on the export of critical metals have disrupted manufacturing sectors globally, including in India, impacting industries such as automotive and semiconductor production. 'We are willing to enhance dialogue and cooperation with relevant countries and regions to jointly keep the stability of global industrial and supply chains,' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told PTI when asked whether China plans to lift its export restrictions on rare earth metals to India, especially as it has started approving export licences to the US and the EU. While offering no direct assurance, Lin reiterated that specific details should be addressed by the relevant Chinese authorities. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Meanwhile, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it is in contact with Chinese counterparts to ensure greater predictability in the supply chain, in line with international trade norms. 'We have been in touch with the Chinese side, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and general administration of customs in early April, as you would be aware, had announced the decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth-related items. 'We are in touch with the Chinese side, both here in Delhi as also in Beijing, to bring predictability in supply chain for trade, consistent with international practices,' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters in response to a query on Thursday. On June 16, Indian Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat met with Chinese Vice Minister Sun Weidong to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including shared concerns, PTI quoted a statement from China's foreign ministry. The meeting comes amid growing alarm in India over shortages of rare earth metals, crucial for the automotive, electronics, and renewable energy sectors. Reports from India have highlighted industry-wide disruptions stemming from China's recent export restrictions on these critical materials. China, which holds a dominant position in the global rare earths market, has recently begun selectively clearing export licences, particularly to the United States, following two days of high-level trade talks in London. The move came as both nations agreed to ease tensions, with US President Donald Trump declaring on Wednesday that a trade deal with China 'is done.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rare earth elements, comprising 17 metallic elements, are vital for the production of magnets, batteries, and high-tech devices. While these metals are found in multiple countries, their extraction is expensive and environmentally hazardous, often leaving China as the preferred global supplier. According to the International Energy Agency, China accounts for 61% of global rare earth mining and 92% of processing output. Although China has opened dialogue with the US and EU to address concerns over supply shortages, it has yet to publicly respond to India's request for similar talks. In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs said it is engaging with the Chinese side to ensure stability and predictability in trade supply chains. Meanwhile, an Indian industry delegation, comprising representatives from the auto sector, is reportedly preparing to visit China to secure rare earth magnet imports for domestic manufacturers, sources in New Delhi said. A good fix: On the IRCTC and ticket booking

The e-ticketing system of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) is one of India's most widely used e-commerce platforms. Crores of Indian rail commuters and passengers use it to book their tickets, which makes it imperative that the system is run robustly. The scale of the operation is revealing — on May 22, 2025, the IRCTC processed a staggering 31,814 tickets in 60 seconds to set a new record. Yet, the popular e-ticketing system, especially the Tatkal booking part, is plagued by issues. Extremely high demand during peak hours, particularly during the designated Tatkal booking window period, often leads to crashes and slow performance. A major concern is that the system is exploited by ticketing agents who use unfair automated tools (or bots), leading to rapidly dwindling ticket availability for passengers. These issues are what prompted the IRCTC to announce two major steps. The first was a major digital overhaul of the ticketing infrastructure using anti-bot systems to prevent unauthorised automated bookings — a measure that led to the de-activation of a whopping 2.5 crore suspect user IDs. Implementation of a content delivery network also helped improve website performance. In addition, Aadhaar verification is necessary immediately after a ticket is booked. The IRCTC has also mandated Aadhaar authentication for all Tatkal bookings, from July 1, along with OTP-based authentication. Authorised agents have been restricted from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window period. The idea behind an e-ticketing platform and the provision of Tatkal booking of tickets are to provide equitable chances for passengers to travel. Despite more train services having been introduced over the years by the Indian Railways, which is a state monopoly, demand far outstrips supply, and passengers have to rely on advanced booking and Tatkal tickets for their travel. When agents use bots to game the system, it kills the purpose of equity. Therefore, the IRCTC's steps will bring relief to passengers. That said, the Indian Railways must focus not only on easing the process of ticketing but also on elevating the passenger experience in terms of increasing its train and track capacity to fulfil travel demand, ensuring safety and enhancing its facilities. Seen in this context, while these ticketing fixes are important, the true test for the Indian Railways will be its ability to move beyond just technical and administrative solutions and undertake a fundamental expansion of its services to serve India's large passenger clientele. In a way, meaningful expansion to meet the demand will also obviate the need for reworking technological solutions yet again in the future.
