Free power supply for Andhra weavers from August 7

KADAPA: Yet another poll promise of the TDP-led NDA government -- free power to handloom and powerloom weavers -- will be fulfilled on August 7 to mark International Handloom Day.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced it while addressing the gathering at Praja Vedika in Jammalamadugu mandal of Kadapa district on Friday, meant for the disbursement of pensions.
Under the new welfare scheme, which was approved by the State Cabinet in March this year, 500 units of free power will be supplied to power loom operators, and 200 units to handloom weavers. The new free power scheme stands to benefit 50,000 families of handloom weavers, and 11,500 families of those dependent on powerlooms. The State will bear an additional burden of Rs 125 crore per year to implement it.
Naidu detailed the NTR Bharosa scheme, disbursing Rs 33,000 crore annually to 64 lakh beneficiaries, the highest in India. He announced 1.09 lakh new spouse pensions worth Rs 520 crore, and 1,08,499 widow pensions costing Rs 43.40 crore, delivered directly, including 14,703 hospitalised and 31,496 relocated beneficiaries. He emphasised prioritising pension distribution on first of every month, adjusting his schedule post-Singapore visit.

Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation to organise seminar ‘Post-COVID Development Challenges and Response: Kerala through the lens of State budgets' from Tuesday

The Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation (GIFT) is organising a two-day national seminar 'Post-COVID Development Challenges and Response: Kerala through the lens of State budgets' from Tuesday (August 5). Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal will inaugurate the seminar on Tuesday. GIFT director K.J. Joseph said that the seminar would focus on development issues that Kerala has been addressing since the pandemic. More than 50 experts in various disciplines would share their thoughts on different aspects of the subject over the two days. 'The seminar also aims to foster an informed academic and policy discourse on how Kerala's recent budgets has functioned as an instrument for responding to developmental challenges and as a blueprint for structural transformation of the State,' GIFT said in a statement. Kerala, a top achiever in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has several top rankings to its credit especially in sectors like education, health and social welfare. But the State is also facing developmental challenges. The State's susceptibility to climate change-induced natural calamities has increased in recent years. Against this background, the seminar aims to deliberate on issues of how the State's perspective on development has evolved in the context of the challenges. M.A. Oommen, distinguished professor, GIFT, will preside over the inaugural session.

28 Maharashtra sugar mills face action for non-payment of dues to farmers

The sugar commissionerate recently issued Revenue Recovery Code (RRC) against 28 sugar mills in Maharashtra for failing to clear their dues to cane farmers for the 2024-25 season. These mills now face the possibility of their sugar stocks being seized and auctioned to pay farmers their dues. A report from the sugar commissionerate shows that mills in the state had crushed 854.50 lakh tonnes of cane and were expected to pay Rs 31,587 crore as the Fair Remunerative Price (FRP) to farmers for cane purchased from them. Till July 15, Maharashtra reported 98.70 per cent of clearance of cane dues. A total of 135 mills have cleared 100 per cent of their FRP till date. Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court struck down the 2022 government resolution that allowed FRP to be paid in parts. FRP is linked with sugar recovery – which is the ratio between sugar produced and cane crushed – and the 2022 resolution had mandated that payment be done as per the recovery of the current season. This meant the first payment would be as per the base recovery, and once the season is over, the rest would be paid as per the final recovery percentage of the mill. This was a break from the past, where the mills paid the FRP as per the recovery of the last season, and most mills paid FRP in one instalment. Farmer leader Raju Shetti had moved the Bombay High Court against this move, and the high court had struck down the 2022 government resolution. The state government has moved the Supreme Court against this decision. Yogesh Pande, Spokesperson, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, said, 'We have already filed a caveat in the Supreme Court in this regard. We will pursue the matter to its logical end.'
