Justin Herbert says he requested to play in the preseason
The Chargers quarterback asked coach Jim Harbaugh to suit up and get some snaps, something he has never done in his career. Herbert will start and play a few plays against the Rams on Saturday.
'It was actually me going to him and saying, 'Hey, would it be OK if I went in and played?'' Herbert said, via Eric Smith of the team website. 'Because I think in years past, the plan was to rest. But I wanted to go out there and feel the pass rush because in practice, as a quarterback, you don't always get the true feeling of the pass rush.
'So, I thought it'd be helpful to go out there. He was understanding and he worked together talking through it.'
Herbert originally was scheduled to play last weekend's preseason opener against the Saints. Rashawn Slater's season-ending knee injury forced a shuffling of the offensive line and prompted the Chargers to sit Herbert.
'We had to adjust and worked toward this being the week to play,' Herbert said.
The Chargers made Herbert a 2020 first-round selection, but the NFL didn't have a preseason that year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He didn't dress for any exhibition games from 2021-23 and was dealing with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot last year.
This year, he's healthy and willing.
'I just thought it was something that can help,' Herbert said. 'I just thought this was something that could be good for me and good for the team.'
Backup quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Trey Lance also will play Saturday, Harbaugh said.

The second week of NFL preseason kicks into high gear on Saturday with turf wars in both New York and Los Angeles. The New Yorkers will meet in their annual preseason game at MetLife Stadium, which is the regular-season home for both, after a pair of scrimmages earlier in the week. A look at three: Miami Dolphins (0-0-1) at Detroit Lions (1-1) Saturday, CBS/Paramount+, 1 pm ET The matchup The Dolphins are expected to take a long look at backup quarterback Zach Wilson, who is fighting with rookie seventh-round draft pick Quinn Ewers to be first in line behind concussion-prone Tua Tagovailoa, which because of that carries more weight than a normal position battle. Wilson led the Dolphins to touchdowns on both his drives after replacing Tagovailoa for the second series of a 24-24 tie with Chicago last week, and he was sacked four times. Rookie running back Ollie Gordon II will get a chance after moving the depth charge following the season-ending neck injury to Alexander Mattison. Detroit quarterback Kyle Allen, obtained in the offseason and Jared Goff insurance, outplayed second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker by throwing a pair of touchdown passes a week ago, and the battle continues. The competition will play out against Dolphins' second-teamers, which has the feel of a mismatch. The teams scrimmaged twice early in the week, when both teams' No. 1 offenses played well. The spread: Dolphins -1 1/2 The money line: Dolphins -118 The total: 36 1/2 The play: Detroit. The Lions have won and covered three of their last four preseason games and benefit by entering this match with an extra game under their belt. New York Giants (1-0) vs New York Jets (1-0) Saturday, NFL Network, 7 pm ET The matchup The Giants traded up in the draft to get quarterback Jaxson Dart after selecting edge rusher Abdul Carter with the third pick of the first round, and both are expected to get plenty of time in this yearly preseason match. Dart, drafted as the quarterback of the future after the Giants signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal, might have wide receiver Garrett Wilson to throw to for a series or two. Wilson signed a five-year, $130 million deal a month ago. Justin Fields, who played with Wilson in Pittsburgh a year ago, will get a longer look than just the limited snaps he had in the 30-10 victory over Green Bay in the opener, when he completed three of four passes and had two carries for 14 yards and a touchdown. The spread: Giants -3 1/2 The money line: Giants -190 The total: -39.5 The play: The Jets. The AFC side of New York has won and covered the last four in the exhibition borough series, and three have gone under. Cincinnati Bengals (0-1) at Washington Commanders (0-1) Monday, ESPN, 6:10 pm ET The matchup The Bengals had a developing situation in practice Wednesday, when defensive lineman Shermar Stewart, their first round draft pick, plowed into quarterback Joe Burrow while sacking him in a live scrimmage. Burrow, obviously, was not to be touched, and two plays later offensive lineman Lucas Patrick started a fight with Stewart, who later apologized to Burrow. 'He said, 'It's cool as long as you do it on Sundays, too,'' said Stewart of Burrow's response. Stewart held out through organized teams activities and the first week of training camp before signing a four-year, $19 million deal. He is expected to pair with edge rusher Trey Hendrickson to bulk up the defense, but Hendrickson is still holding out. He has one year and $16 million remaining on his deal. The Commanders rivaled the Bengals in offense performance behind offensive rookie of the year quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2024, when they were fifth in points and seventh in total yards. They are operating at a disadvantage again this week while trying synch up with a new group. Starting wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who may not have played regardless, is on the physically unable to perform list while seeking an extension to the three-year, $68.3 million contract he signed in 2022. The Commanders retooled in the offseason by adding wide receiver Deb Samuel and left tackle Laremy Tunsil, new to Kliff Kingsbury's offense. Rams vs. Chargers: As Matthew Stafford tests his back, others fight for roster spots
Rams coach Sean McVay will evaluate roster hopefuls on Saturday when the Rams play the Chargers in a preseason game at SoFi Stadium. But as was the case last week when the Rams played the Dallas Cowboys, the most important evaluation will occur hours before kickoff at the Rams' Woodland Hills training facility. Star quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has yet to practice because of a back issue, is scheduled to go through another workout. And McVay and the Rams are hopeful that the aftermath of the session will be better than the last. Read more: Matthew Stafford's back injury continues to be a nuisance for Rams According to McVay, during Stafford's first throwing session, the 17th-year pro looked 'awesome.' That's not how Stafford — or the Rams — felt in the days that followed: Stafford did not begin practicing as scheduled. There are still three weeks remaining before the Sept. 7 opener against the Houston Texans at SoFi Stadium. So there is still plenty of time for one of the NFL's most experienced players to prepare for the opener and the 16 games that will follow. A painless recovery from Saturday's workout would be a start. Here are five things to watch during Saturday's game: Will the Rams neutralize Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert? Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh has said that he plans to play most starters for at least a few series. Since McVay does not play starters or other significant players during preseason games, that means drafted rookies and others hoping to make an impression will get the opportunity to do so against frontline players for several snaps. Rams rookie linebacker Chris 'Pooh' Paul is expected to again call defensive signals, and rookie edge rusher Josaiah Stewart is aiming for his second sack. Cornerbacks Derion Kendrick, Shaun Jolly, Josh Wallace and Cam Lampkin could go against veteran receiver Kennan Allen. Can quarterback Stetson Bennett continue to play with efficiency? Bennett played well in the Rams' 31-21 victory over Cowboys, passing for 188 yards and two touchdowns, with an interception. Bennett does not have to be spectacular to give McVay at least some confidence that he could manage the offense if Stafford does not recover from his back issue and if veteran Jimmy Garoppolo suffers an injury. Bennett's renewed confidence was evident during training camp and against the Cowboys. It was on full display when, after dumping a third-down pass rather than forcing it, he came back on fourth down and connected with receiver Xavier Smith for a long gain. Is Cody Schrader on track to make the running back rotation? It is clear that McVay wants to see how Blake Corum and rookie Jarquez Hunter would fit as back-ups for starter Kyren Williams. And with veteran Ronnie Rivers suffering a rib injury against the Cowboys, the door is open for Schrader to continue to impress. Schrader rushed for a team-best 59 yards in five carries against the Cowboys and turned a pass reception into a nine-yard touchdown. He also played 13 special teams snaps. Last season, the Rams claimed Schrader off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers at the end of training camp, and then kept him on the roster to prevent other teams from signing him off the practice squad. Can receiver Xavier Smith lock down a spot? On a certain level, it seems like a foregone conclusion. Smith stepped up and performed in seemingly every opportunity as a special teams player and receiver last season. Now he is aiming to find a spot in a receiver group that includes Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Tutu Atwell and Jordan Whittington. Rookie receiver Konata Mumpfield got most of the compliments from coaches and players during training camp as Smith quietly built his case. Mumpfield struggled in his first preseason game, but it would not be surprising if he makes adjustments and takes a big step against the Chargers. How will Aubrey Pleasant handle head coach duties? This is the second year in a row that McVay has given Pleasant, who oversees defensive backs and also holds the title of assistant head coach, the opportunity to be the head coach for a preseason game against the Chargers. Pleasant will meet with game officials, handle pregame and halftime addresses to the team, oversee game management and handle postgame media responsibilities. National Football League Lack of Matthew Stafford Succession Plan Could Cost Rams Super Bowl Shot Published Aug. 15, 2025 3:48 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link CARSON, Calif. — Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay appropriately wore shades while addressing reporters after his team's joint practice with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday at Dignity Health Sports Park. Obfuscation regarding injuries is paramount during these dog days of training camp. And top of mind for McVay was the health of star quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has not practiced since the start of camp due to an aggravated disc in his back. McVay said that Stafford will try to throw on Saturday before the Rams host the crosstown rival Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in their second preseason game. "Hopefully it responds a little bit better and I'll have more information for you guys then," McVay said regarding Stafford. In the past two years, McVay and GM Les Snead have retooled the team with a ferocious defensive front led by Jared Verse, Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske. Now as they're expected to contend for the Super Bowl after taking the Philadelphia Eagles to the brink of elimination in the divisional round last season, the Rams have pinned their title hopes on a 37-year-old quarterback with a balky back. If Stafford can't stay healthy, it's hard to see this team making any noise in the postseason — or even reaching the playoffs. And the team's failure to create a succession plan for Stafford could curtail its Super Bowl hopes for years to come. ADVERTISEMENT Stafford was expected to return to practice after a throwing session at the team's Woodland Hills headquarters last weekend. McVay said Stafford made 68 throws during that session and looked good. But the veteran QB did not participate in practice all week. When asked if Stafford might need surgery to fix the disc issue, McVay said that has not been discussed. The Rams and Stafford had extensive contract negotiations this offseason, during which the team gave him permission to seek a trade. Part of the team's apprehension in moving forward with Stafford is his injury history since arriving in Los Angeles. Last season, he cracked four ribs in Week 15. In 2023, he missed two games with a sprained ligament in his right thumb and played through a hip contusion. He missed the last seven games of the 2022 season with a bruised spinal cord. He also dealt with a concussion and lingering elbow issues. In the end, after Stafford entertained pitches from the Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, he and the Rams agreed to a two-year, $84 million extension. If Stafford misses time during the 2025 regular season, next up is veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. After sizzling in a joint scrimmage against an undermanned Dallas defense last week, Garoppolo struggled with accuracy and failed to find a rhythm in a joint practice with the Saints here on Thursday. The Rams were flummoxed by a New Orleans defense led by former L.A. defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Sean McVay described Garoppolo's performance as "up and down." "One of my favorite things about Jimmy is if something doesn't go down the way we want or if we have a little bit of a miscommunication, he's great about being able to reset," McVay said. The Rams signed Garoppolo before last season, and he's back on a one-year, $3 million deal. Perhaps that's because he always played well against the Rams, posting an 8-0 record during the regular season against McVay. However, there's a reason why the 49ers and Raiders moved on from Garoppolo, and his ability to stay on the field is worse than Stafford's. Jimmy Garoppolo may be one of the better backups in the league, but it would be tough for the Rams to count on the 33-year-old journeyman to lead them deep into the postseason. (Photo by Jevone Moore/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) The Rams have had time to find an eventual successor for Stafford since making the trade with the Detroit Lions to secure his services four years ago. Since McVay took over as head coach in 2017, however, the Rams have drafted only one quarterback: Stetson Bennett in the fourth round in 2023. The 27-year-old Georgia product looks better in his third season, but he does not project as the long-term answer at quarterback for the Rams. Instead, McVay has instead invested in reclamation projects like Garoppolo, Blake Bortles, Baker Mayfield and Carson Wentz. The Rams have passed on using significant draft capital to select a quarterback of the future. Certainly their lack of a first-round pick for seven consecutive years from 2017 to 2023 was a factor. "F them picks" was the team's mantra after winning Super Bowl LVI in 2022. But this year, they traded out of the first round one pick after the New York Giants selected Jaxson Dart at No. 25. Other developmental quarterbacks available when Los Angeles was on the clock included Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and Shedeur Sanders. The Rams had a visit with Milroe during the pre-draft process. Last year, the Rams were reportedly interested in trading up for Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who went to the Raiders at No. 13. Maybe they should have been working to move up for a chance to draft Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix. The Rams have two first-round picks next year, so McVay could look to address the quarterback position at that time. But that doesn't help this team with Super Bowl aspirations if Stafford can't figure out a way to get back on the field and stay healthy in 2025. For now, McVay is counting on the tough-minded Texan to work through the pain and be ready for the season opener against the Houston Texans. "I don't really have much more information other than we're trying some different things that are hopefully going to be in alignment with getting him back out on the field," McVay said.
