Swiatek, Zverev advance in rain-hit Cincinnati Open
Wimbledon champion Swiatek extended her perfect record against Cirstea to 5-0 and will next face the winner of an all-Russian clash between Anna Kalinskaya and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
"We played many tough matches, so I know Sorana can really hit the ball well, especially on faster surfaces," Poland's Swiatek said.
"I'm happy I was solid enough. I was trying to be proactive with my serve, not many of my first serves went in, but I was happy I was solid on my second serves."
Fellow Pole Magda Linette upset fourth seed Jessica Pegula 7-6(5) 3-6 6-3 in a third-round match that extended over two days after Tuesday's suspension due to rain.
The American had levelled the match at a set apiece, but on Wednesday's resumption Linette earned the break before closing it out on serve for her second Top-10 win of the season.
In the men's draw, Zverev completed a 6-4 6-4 win over Nakashima after the match was suspended overnight when he was leading 5-4 in the second set.
The German third seed is set to return to the court later on Wednesday, aiming to avenge last week's Toronto semi-final loss to Russian Karen Khachanov.
Earlier, seventh seed Holger Rune advanced after home favourite Frances Tiafoe was forced to retire with a back injury.

College coach goes on rant about money ruining football players
With the landscape of college athletics ever changing, one coach is reminding his players the real reason why they're in school and is pushing against the idea of playing college football to earn money. Earlier this year, the so-called 'House settlement' paved the way for colleges and universities to pay student-athletes part of their revenue earned from athletics each year. This, on top of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, means that athletes have greater earning potential in college than ever before. Couple that with the increasing popularity and use of a transfer portal and student-athletes have become akin to free agents in professional sports. One school suffering from that is Northern Illinois University (NIU) - which competes in the Mid-America Conference (MAC) and lost 19 football players to the transfer portal after last season. In a blistering rant, NIU head coach Thomas Hammock railed against the changing culture in the sport and reminded his players that college is about more than jumping from school to school to earn money. 'Yeah, to me, to be honest with you, I love the challenge,' Hammock told reporters in a press conference. 'It don't bother me one bit because you know what? In life, you're going to make decisions. Sometimes it's going to work in your favor, and sometimes it's not. 'I told our team the other day, "We lost all these guys. Let's see who plays." So it's all good when people put it on Twitter, Hey, all glory to God, I'm going on the transfer portal. Let's see if they play. How many of them guys going to play or travel or get snaps? 'I was going to tweet something the other day, a picture of me, and say, You know what? I enjoyed my college experience. I didn't get one dime, but the lessons I learned was more valuable than any money you can ever pay me. And I appreciate that because that is long term. People are losing the fact that this is short term. 'I coached in the National Football League for five years. Five years, right? Don't lose focus of work the long term. Get your degree, learn valuable lessons that's going to help you in the long term of your life. That's the whole purpose. 'This is a transition from being a kid to a grown up. And I hope people don't lose focus of that. Everybody's talking about everything else besides what is the most important thing for going to college. Because if you're going to college to go get a couple of dollars, you might as well go get a job. This is too hard to go get a couple of dollars. 'Learn the lesson that you need to learn to be successful in life for the next 40 to 50 years of your life. I would do it again for free, for free, because of the things I learned. That's why I'm standing here today because of what I learned in college, not because of how much somebody gave me. That's what I would te 'Parents, they need to learn that lesson, too. Stop trying to live through your kids. Go teach your kids what are the things they need to learn to be successful. That's what I'm telling my kids. 'I don't care about no NIL, no revenue share. I can care less. You need to learn things in college to get you prepared for life, to be a father, a husband, to work, everything are the most important things. That's what people are missing, in my opinion. Just my opinion.'

Soccer fans tear into 'soft' USMNT star Christian Pulisic as he defends controversial decision
Stateside soccer fans have turned on USMNT hero Christian Pulisic for his 'soft' attitude after the AC Milan star hit back at his critics. The midfielder sparked backlash earlier this year when he ruled himself out of Mauricio Pochettino 's USMNT squad for this summer's Gold Cup action after a long campaign in Italy with Milan. And, in a new nine-episode documentary following his career on Paramount+, the former Chelsea winger defended his decision - much to the ire of American soccer fans. 'It is a lot. it's hard to keep up with playing every single game,' Pulisic said. 'I mean, you see a ton of injuries. But this is how it is. This is the business. People want to see us play. 'I think it's just a decision I had to come to to do the best thing for myself and to look out for myself for once. But I think everyone has had their opinion on me and, in my opinion, just disrespected me in a lot of ways and just completely forgotten about what I've done for this national team for 10 years. It sucks.' However, after the snippet of the documentary was shared to social media, American soccer fans ripped into the 26-year-old for his 'soft' stance as they accused him of painting himself as the victim. How anyone thought it was a good idea to film a documentary for a midtable player in Italy I'll never know,' another slammed in response to the clip on X. 'Every time Pulisic talks he makes it worse, the entitlement and whininess makes him very unlikable,' a third fan critiqued. 'I hope he turns this around, ultimately the 2026 World Cup with the USMNT will be his opportunity on the field, even so... the damage has been done off the field.' 'I can't anymore. The whining, the entitlement, the poor-me theatrics,' one frustrated soccer supporter fumed. 'Yes of course you live under a microscope. You're the country's best player. And compared to every other (soccer) country, you have it so easy.' Others believed that hitting back at the critics of his decision was the worst possible move Pulisic could have made. Fans ripped into the 26-year-old after he tried to defend his decision in a new documentary '@pulisic bad looks all around. People used to respect you,' another claimed, while one chimed in: 'Clown show. Nobody feels bad for you Christian.' The criticism of Pulisic hasn't been limited to America's fanbase with former USMNT stars and legends also taking issue with his decision to sit out of the Gold Cup. Ahead of the tournament, US soccer icon Landon Donovan, without naming names, took a jab at Pulisic and other USMNT key figures who excused themselves from Pochettino's roster. 'I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's pissing me off,' the former Everton forward said. Another player turned pundit, Alexi Lalas, also piled on Pulisic on the 'Call It What You Want' podcast on the Golazo Network 'You can talk about my performances, whatever you want, but to question my commitment, especially towards the national team, in my opinion that's way out of line,' Lalas said. Yet, Pulisic took a swipe at the legends during his documentary, branding their comments a 'cop-out'. 'I'd say the most annoying thing, and for me, the biggest cop-out of all time, is when, especially, you know, all pundits want to say: 'They didn't want it. They didn't have the heart, you know, back in our day, we would fight and we would die on that field,'' Pulisic said in the eighth episode of the docuseries, which was filmed earlier this summer. His international teammate Tim Weah backed Pulisic as he hit out at the 'evil' analysts. 'Those guys are chasing checks, and for me, I just feel like they're really evil, honestly, because they've been players, and they know what it's like when you're getting bashed,' Weah said. 'Those are the same guys that will turn around and shake your hand and try to be friendly with you.' Pochettino and the USMNT are entering a critical year as they gear up for the World Cup on home soil next year.
