AIDWA urges Lokesh to address real problems plaguing schools in A.P.
In a letter addressed to the Minister, the association's State president B. Prabhavati, and general secretary D. Rama Devi, said as part of their recent visit to government schools, certain key issues came to the fore, which needed to be resolved immediately. Citing events like mega Parent-Teacher Meetings organised across the State and attempt to achieve Guinness World Record, they said it would augur well for the school education system if the government focussed on handling real problems.
They said the workers engaged to cook midday meal in schools were not paid salaries for some time and some of the schools had not been receiving fine quality rice and allocations were not being made according to the menu. The members said they found many students bringing lunch boxes from home as, according to them, the food served at their school did not taste good. In some schools, children were made to clean toilets in the absence of sanitary workers.
Teachers complained that the burden of operating different apps was affecting their teaching schedules. They said in some schools, teachers were seen immersed in their mobile phones, instead of teaching children how to keep the electronic gadgets at a distance and focus on their academics.
The AIDWA members cited schools without compound walls, which posed security threat to the students and said mapping of schools without heeding the parents' plea and closure of schools in Dalit habitations in the name of establishing model schools would have an adverse impact on the academic performance of the young learners.
They urged the Minister to ensure immediate payment of the salary arrears to workers engaged for cooking the food served in the midday meal programme in schools and demanded a hike in their salaries. Their other demands included conduct of training sessions for teachers on how to make classroom teaching interesting for students and effective steps to control use of mobile phones on school campuses.

Poor enrolment in schools is UP govt's fault, alleges AAP
Lucknow: In continuation of its ongoing protest against the programme initiated by UP govt to pair low-occupancy schools with the ones with more strength, Aam Aadmi Party staged protest in Lucknow on Saturday, attended by activists, teachers and parents of schoolgoing children. The party said the protests would continue across the state until govt retracted the order. Party MP Sanjay Singh, who led the protest, said AAP would not allow any govt school to be closed. Referring to some changes made in the order by govt on Thursday, Singh said this was partial victory but the movement would not stop until the plan to close selected schools was completely abandoned. Accusing govt of failing to improve condition of schools in the state, Singh said current plan of govt was an attempt to deprive children from poor, Dalit, backward classes and minority backgrounds of education. He argued that reason for poor enrolment given for pairing of schools was govt's fault, not of children. "The effort to walk longer distances to attend schools will most impact girls, differently abled children and those from marginalised communities and it is the duty of govt to ensure easy, accessible schooling for all children," he said. Party's co-in charge for UP, Dilip Pandey, said govt would not be allowed to get away with minor changes and would have to retract the order fully. 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence: Inquiry commission gets 3-month extension
The Maharashtra government has given a fresh three-month extension to the inquiry commission probing the violence that took place on January 1, 2018 at Koregaon Bhima village in Pune district. The earlier extension granted to the Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission was till July 31. The comission has now been given extension till October 31 to submit its report, officials said. Violence had broken out near the Koregaon Bhima war memorial in Pune district on January 1, 2018, a day after the Elgar Parishad conclave was held in Pune. Dalits visit the memorial in large numbers as it commemorates the victory of British forces, which included Dalit soldiers, over the army of the Brahmin Peshwa rulers of Pune in 1818. The two-member commission, comprising retired chief justice of Calcutta High Court J N Patel and former Maharashtra chief secretary Sumit Mullick, is probing the circumstances that triggered the riots.

Congress Dalit leaders meet at Parameshwara's residence, discuss internal quota
Ministers and MLAs belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) community of the Congress held a meeting at the residence of Home Minister G. Parameshwara in the city on Saturday, amid a demand for implementing the internal quota among SC groups. Besides Dr. Parameshwara, three Ministers — Shivaraj Tangadagi, K.H. Muniyappa, R.B. Thimmapur — and 20 MLAs attended the meeting and reportedly discussed issues related to internal quota and intra-party unity among leaders. Minister Priyank Kharge did not attend the meeting since he was in Delhi with regard to the IT/BT programme, sources said. In January, Dr. Parameshwara planned to hold a dinner meeting of Dalit leaders, which sparked off a controversy and was eventually called off after intervention from the party high command. Sources said the meeting of SC Congress leaders was convened to resolve inner differences before the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission submits its report on internal quota to the government. A couple of days ago, Dr. Parameshwara told reporters: 'We will get to know everyone's opinions on the internal quota issue.' The commission, which had monitored the two-month survey, is expected to come out with a formula to divide the 17% reservation for SCs amongst the different sub-groups based on their population and backwardness. The Dalit left has fought for internal reservation on the grounds that they have been historically deprived of reservation benefits.
