MLA aims to achieve full literacy in Kovur constituency

The Hindu22-04-2025
Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy, along with SPSR Nellore district Collector O. Anand, initiated a constituency-level literacy programme, which will be implemented in 138 hamlets of the constituency. She is confident that Kovur constituency will achieve 100 per cent literacy through this initiative.
In a meeting held with community mobilisers as part of the programme at the ICDS Centre in Kovur on Tuesday, she said that the development of 82 panchayats in the constituency is in the hands of local leaders and the people. She said that only those who identify local needs and work towards their solutions will become true leaders.
The MLA further said, 'Kovur is a vibrant constituency. The cancer screening tests conducted in the past has been a success story. Similarly, the literacy programme will see good results. The necessary financial support for this programme will be provided by Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy through their VPR Trust.'
'While touring the villages at the field-level, I understood that there are many people who are unaware of the various welfare schemes provided by the government. Hence, being literate is vital for them to have a basic understanding of the respective schemes. Every person must utilise this opportunity and become literate, especially women,' she said.
The MLA asked the community mobilisers to play their part in achieving complete literacy in Kovur. 'There is joy in sharing knowledge with others. Everyone should think in the same way and make the initiative a success.' she said.
Meanwhile, Collector Anand said, 'As part of the efforts to increase the literacy rate in the district, Kovur constituency has been selected for this initiative. Nearly 2,500 volunteer teachers have been appointed to teach 22,000 illiterate people identified in the constituency.'
'Apart from making them literate, awareness on National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) works, banking operations, and other government programmes will also be imparted to them. As a part of the 90-day plan, they will also learn basic skills in financial literacy and digital literacy,' he added.

Minister slams YSRCP govt for stopping contractors' bills

Banaganapalle (Nandyal district): Road sand buildings Minister B C Janardhan Reddy on Thursday personally distributed payments to beneficiaries and contractors for development projects completed during the 2014-2019 TDP government's tenure. A total of Rs. 73,28,299 was released to 376 beneficiaries from five mandals in the Banaganapalle constituency. The payments were made in compliance with court orders. Speaking at his camp office, the minister expressed his satisfaction in fulfilling this long-standing commitment. He criticised the previous YSRCP government, accusing it of withholding the payments out of 'political vendetta.' Janardhan Reddy noted that works such as mini Gokulam sheds, CC roads, IHHL units, NREGA projects, and horticulture schemes, which were sanctioned between 2017 and 2019, were completed on schedule. However, he said that the YSRCP government, upon taking office, withheld 21 per cent of the sanctioned funds. This action, he said, deprived contractors and individual beneficiaries of their rightful payments and forced them to seek relief from the courts after their repeated representations were ignored. The minister praised the beneficiaries and contractors for their perseverance in securing justice through the legal system. He affirmed the current government's commitment to honoring past obligations and ensuring that everyone who contributes to the state's development is paid fairly and without prejudice. In response, beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the minister and the TDP-led coalition government for resolving the issue and restoring their faith in the administration.

DCM slams Centre over minimal funding

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday accused the BJP-led Union government of contributing a mere 20% in some stretches as low as 11% towards Bengaluru's Metro Yellow Line project, while the Karnataka government bore 80% of the cost. Speaking near his residence in Sadashivanagar, Shivakumar urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allocate at least Rs 1 lakh crore for the city's development. He said the state government had fully funded the land acquisition for the project, even though the Centre was supposed to provide 50% of the cost. 'Bengaluru is the second-highest tax-paying city in India, yet the grants we receive are disproportionately low,' he remarked. He pointed out that Ahmedabad receives 20% of tax revenue, while Bengaluru gets only 10%, and appealed for parity with other major cities. Stressing that his demand was not political buta genuine request for fair consideration, he said, 'Treat Bengaluru on par with the national capital.'Shivakumar criticised BJP MPs from Karnataka for failing to bring even Rs 10 of aid to the city or state. 'They boast of achievements, but the reality is they have done nothing. Only the Union Jal Shakti Minister has occasionally responded to our requests; otherwise, we have received nothing, not even for the NREGA scheme,' he alleged. He ridiculed BJP MPs for limiting their work to social media posts and photo opportunities. 'Posting on X and posing for photos is not achievement. Your conscience should guide you to bring funds for the people instead of playing politics,' he DCM claimed the Centre had ignored Karnataka entirely but maintained that the state had still invited the Prime Minister to inaugurate the project as a mark of respect. He highlighted that the Yellow Line benefits IT industry hubs, creating one lakh jobs annually in Bengaluru. Shivakumar challenged BJP leaders to release official figures of their contributions to the city's infrastructure, promising to release his own. He also thanked Infosys, Delta, Biocon, and other companies for funding Metro stations along the Yellow Line.
